Bucks-Hawks Preview

Finally, the Milwaukee Bucks are getting a chance to prove their surge hasn't been a fluke.

With an opportunity to win seven straight road games for the first time in 25 years, the Bucks face their toughest opponent in nearly a month as they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday night.

Six straight victories overall have helped Milwaukee (30-28) move into seventh in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind sixth-place Chicago and 1 1/2 in back of fifth-place Toronto. The Bucks are trying to win seven straight for the first time since an eight-game run in January 2002.

Milwaukee's road success has been even more surprising. A victory over the Hawks (36-21) would give the Bucks their first seven-game road winning streak since the 1984-1985 season.

"The confidence level is very high, and we're really playing well as a team," Bucks guard Jerry Stackhouse said. "Everyone is sharing the ball and getting it done at both ends of the court."

Milwaukee, though, has hardly played elite competition during either of its streaks having faced no team currently in the top six in the East until now - Atlanta is fourth. This will be the Bucks' toughest matchup since losing 99-82 at Southeast Divison-leading Orlando on Feb. 2.

Milwaukee has lost five straight at Atlanta, which has been one of the league's best home teams this season with a 22-7 record. The Hawks, though, come in having lost two of three at Philips Arena.

The Bucks should at least be competitive if they can keep up their strong defensive play. They've held four of their last six opponents to 88 points or less.

Milwaukee limited Miami to 35.9 percent shooting in a 94-71 win Saturday, though the Heat were without Dwyane Wade due to a strained calf.

John Salmons continues to give the Bucks a boost since being acquired in a trade with Chicago on Feb. 18. The veteran guard had 18 points versus the Heat and is averaging 18.2 points in five games with his new club.

"He does a lot of things well," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "He can shoot the ball and put it on the floor. He passes the ball well. He's a willing defender. He's experienced. Having said all that, the most important thing for us is his size. We play small so much and he makes play ... we just didn't have that before."

Salmons may be matched up at times with Joe Johnson, who leads the Hawks with 21.8 points per game. He scored 27 in Atlanta's 111-103 overtime loss to Dallas on Friday - a game the Hawks led by 15 in the fourth quarter.

Atlanta has a strong team overall, including third-year big man Al Horford, but owner Michael Gearon Jr. says the team will be "very competitive" in its pursuit of center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who was waived by Washington on Thursday.

Ilgauskas was acquired by the Wizards from Cleveland on Feb. 17 as part of a three-team trade, but never played a game for Washington and agreed to a buyout. The 7-foot-3 veteran is averaging 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Atlanta's frontcourt should face a tough test with Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut, who averaged 18.6 points in nine games prior to being held to eight versus Miami. Bogut scored only nine points in his last matchup with Atlanta, a 110-107 Milwaukee win on Jan. 31, 2009.

The Hawks won their three other matchups with the Bucks last season.

Hawks sneak by in overtime win against Bucks

ATLANTA (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Hawks "stole" a home game with a rugged 106-102 overtime win over the Bucks on Sunday, and a little context made it feel all the better.

Atlanta not only snapped Milwaukee's six-game winning streak, but won a measure of redemption in overcoming a seven-point deficit over the final four minutes of regulation and a five-point shortage in overtime. That was a stark change from Friday, when the Hawks gave away a win over another hot team with a hideous overtime collapse against Dallas.

A couple of Atlanta's coldest players, Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford, heated up to score 18 of the Hawks' final 20 points. Johnson finished with 24 points and Crawford 14 to augment a whopping night by Josh Smith (22 points, 15 rebounds, six assists).

"It definitely felt good," Smith said. "We really needed this one to get our confidence back."

Sunday saw a fairly sudden reversal of fortune as Atlanta guards Mike Bibby, Johnson and Crawford struggled for the better part of four quarters and finished making a combined 15 of 48 shots.

But Johnson and Crawford were money down the stretch. Johnson sent the game to overtime with a 16-foot fade-away jumper with 32 seconds left in regulation after making just 6 of 20 shots before that. He went on to score nine of Atlanta's 14 points in overtime, when Crawford added the final three.

Smith and Al Horford (17 pounds, 10 rebounds) kept the Hawks afloat much of the way, but when Milwaukee went on a 16-6 run in the fourth quarter to take an 89-82 lead on Jerry Stackhouse's reverse layup with 4:15 left in regulation, matters were bleak. Stackhouse scored 20 off the bench.

Andrew Bogut's short jump hook over Horford gave Milwaukee a 91-88 win with 1:18 in regulation before Crawford made a pair of free throws after having made two on Atlanta's previous possession.

Trailing 91-90, Johnson missed a runner and in a loose ball scramble for the ball Milwaukee's John Salmons tried to corral the ball, brushing the fallen Josh Smith in the process. A dubious foul was called on Smith, and Salmons went to the line with 45 seconds left.

When he missed the first free throw, Hawks announcer Dominique Wilkins said on the air, "There is some justice!" Salmons made the second on his way to a game-high 32 points, the Bucks were up 92-90.

After Crawford missed a jumper, Smith somehow corralled the rebound between two Bucks, and after first thinking of trying a stick back, he whipped the ball to Johnson in the left corner. His-off balance shot over Salmons with 32 seconds left closed the regulation scoring, and tied the game at 92.

Bogut and Johnson missed shots to force overtime.

The Hawks, who lost a 13-point lead over the final five-plus minutes Friday against the Mavericks and fell 111-103 after a disastrous overtime period, fell behind 97-92 in OT Sunday when Luke Ridnour hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the extra stanza, and Salmons added a jumper.

Here, the Bucks seemed to run out of gas one night after a 94-71 blowout win in Miami.

They missed four of their next five shots, and turned the ball over twice as Johnson started cooking. He hit a 3-pointer, a 12-footer, a 9-footer and two free throws for a 103-99 lead with 12 seconds left in overtime.

"Joe took over the game coming down the stretch," said Atlanta coach Mike Woodson. "I thought it was a total team effort. [The Bucks] had been playing very, very well, and they played well again tonight."

Salmons hit a long trey off an inbounds pass to pull Milwaukee within 103-102, but Crawford -- who made just 3 of 14 shots to stretch his four-game shooting slump to 13 of 49 -- hit three free throws from there to ice the game.

If the season ended Sunday night, the Hawks (37-21) would be the No. 3 seed in the East, and the Bucks (30-29) are one game out of the No. 6 spot held by Chicago. That's how close these teams are to possibly meeting in the postseason.

"This definitely doesn't feel good at all," said Salmons, who made 11 of 20 shots and added eight free throws to eight rebounds and four assists as the Hawks limited rookie guard Brandon Jennings to three points. "It feels like we gave this one away. We have to keep our heads up, and . . . know that we can play with anybody. This is potentially a team that we could see in the playoffs."

As Atlanta prepared to hit the road for a game Monday night at Chicago, the Hawks were feeling better about themselves than they had some 46 hours earlier.

"This is the kind of team that really grinds, [the Bucks] really play hard," Horford said. "It really feels good to beat a team that has been playing well."
