MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Nicholas Batum scored a career high 31 points, a mere 23 points over his per game average, as Portland defeated Minnesota 110-91. LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points and Rudy Fernandez added 18 off the bench in the winning effort.
Portland opened up a comfortable lead in the second quarter with a 13-2 run. Portland only shot 33 percent in the quarter, but their defense was stifling as they held Minnesota to 4-for-17 shooting in the quarter. They led 47-33 at half. Minnesota's 10 second-quarter points is a season low for them.
But it was in the third quarter that Portland really asserted themselves. They scored 36 in the quarter, 22 of which came from Batum.
"If he shoots the ball like that, he's going to be tough to keep off the floor," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "His shot has certainly improved and he's taking it with confidence. And we're going to need that from him because he's going to get that opportunity with teams double-teaming and leaving him open."
The second-year player from France has seen spotty time for the Blazers since returning from an injury to his right shoulder.
"He has worked his way into the lineup," McMillan said. "He's continuing to work hard and is getting confidence with his shot. Tonight was the best I've ever seen him shoot the ball."
Despite having lost in overtime Friday in Chicago 115-111, Portland was a step quicker than Minnesota. Portland holds the best record in the NBA in back-to-back games, having won 12-of-15 and six in a row, including tonight.
Minnesota also played Friday, losing to Oklahoma City 109-92. However, they have a 3-14 record in the second game of a back-to-back situation.
The dominance of the Trailblazers allowed them to give some key players some much needed rest. Marcus Camby only played 24 and Brandon Roy only played 28 minutes.
Roy's 28 minutes were about two more minutes than he spent as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota drafted Roy in 2006, but quickly traded him for Randy Foye, a move that they have undoubtedly regretted.
Minnesota closed Portland's 30-point third-quarter lead to 18 in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, but it never got closer than that.
"We wanted to rest all of our guys as much as possible," McMillan said. "But we started to get passive in the beginning of the fourth quarter, so we put a couple of guys back in. Not that we thought we would lose this lead, but we're not going to allow that type of play."
Al Jefferson scored the first nine points for Minnesota and finished with 13 in the first quarter. He finished with 19 points, a substantial improvement over his recent performance. He has not scored more than a dozen points in the last five games and is only averaging 13.5 ppg in the last sixteen games.
