Kevin Durant's lengthy scoring streak had to end eventually. The Oklahoma City Thunder have to believe the same is true of their playoff drought.

In a minor slump as they continue their push toward the postseason, the Thunder look to bounce back from one of their worst offensive games of the season as they host the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.

A nine-game winning streak that began Jan. 29 has solidified Oklahoma City (33-23) as a contender in the West. The Thunder, currently sixth in the conference, are trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2004-05, when the franchise was based in Seattle.

Oklahoma City, however, has had a tough week. After their run ended with a 104-102 home loss to Phoenix on Tuesday, the Thunder dropped a 95-87 decision the next night at San Antonio.

Against the Spurs, the Thunder shot 39.8 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the line as their five-game road winning streak was snapped.

Even Durant had a subpar game, failing to extend a 29-game streak of scoring 25 points or more. He finished with 21, marking the first time he scored fewer than 25 since posting 13 in a 95-90 loss to Houston on Dec. 19.

His streak set a franchise record and was the longest since Michael Jordan's 40 in a row in 1986-87.

"It was good while it lasted. Teams are too tough in this league for it to go on like that," said Durant, who scores an average of 29.8 per game. "It was cool while it lasted. Very fortunate, privileged to do something like that."

Durant notched 32 points in Oklahoma City's most recent victory, 109-107 against Minnesota (14-45) on Sunday.

The Thunder are 2-0 against the Timberwolves this season, making 13 of 39 of their attempts from 3-point range and 40 of 44 free throws. The Oklahoma City franchise has won 10 of its last 13 games against Minnesota.

Second-year point guard Russell Westbrook had his second career triple-double for the Thunder in the last meeting with 22 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. He's averaging 20.3 points, 9.3 assists and 6.6 rebounds over his last 10 games.

Westbrook will be matched up with promising rookie Jonny Flynn, who had 19 points Sunday. Flynn, who averages 13.8 points, was held to nine on 4-of-13 shooting in Minnesota's 98-92 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday.

The Timberwolves have lost seven of eight after winning their previous four, and with five road wins are tied with Sacramento for third-fewest in the league.

Al Jefferson leads Minnesota with 17.1 points per game, but has been limited to 10 in each of his last four games. Big men Kevin Love and Ryan Hollins picked up some of that slack against the Hawks, combining for 37 points and 16 rebounds.

Love had 19 points and 14 rebounds against Oklahoma City earlier this week.

Thunder ride defense to win as Wolves lose 8th of last 9

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Even before the Oklahoma City Thunder lost two games in a row, coach Scott Brooks thought the team had gotten away from what had brought them so much success this season.

Defense.

Friday night inside the sold-out Ford Center the Thunder did exactly what Brooks hoped they would, they defended, they rebounded and they ran their way to a 109-92 rout of Minnesota.

"That was a good win, the guys played very solid defense," Brooks said. "We had a lot of active hands, five guys engaged on defense. It was good to see."

Oklahoma City (34-23) constantly pestered the Timberwolves (14-46) and seemed to frustrate them from early in the game through to the end.

"This is a team and an environment where you have to come out and be focused and determined straight from the get-go," said Wolves coach Kurt Rambis. "We had too many turnovers early. Guys get frustrated whenever that happens."

Less than two minutes into the game Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook stole an inbounds pass and layed it in to get the crowd roaring and the Timberwolves reeling.

"They did a good job defensively," Rambis said. "They are very active and aggressive and early on we weren't moving the ball at the pace we needed to move at whenever they're that aggressive."

"We came out defensive minded," Westbrook said. "Coach Brooks emphasizes defense. That's what gets our offense started."

"When we defend it gives our athletes a chance to get out and run," Brooks said. "When we can defend, rebound and run, that's the way we wanna play."

The Thunder outrebounded Minnesota 47-43 and outsocred them 21-12 in transition. Oklahoma City also dominated the painted with 62 points to just 40 for the Timberwolves.

Thunder forward Kevin Durant scored 25 points for the 30th time in the last 31 games, and also grabbed nine rebounds, dished out three assists and picked up two steals.

Westbrook had another double-double with 18 points and 15 assists. The 15 dimes ties a career record for Westbrook and marks his fourth straight double-double, another career high. He also pulled down eight rebounds.

"I've been gettin on him lately for flirting with all these triple-doubles," Durant joked. "He ought to get a triple-double every game the way he's been playing."

"It felt good," Westbrook said. "We got some steals and some baskets in transition. I was able to find my teammates for some open shots."

"Russell is doing a great job," Brooks said. "15 assists is about as good as a point guard can play. He stays with it every day, he works hard every day and he's getting better every day."

In the early going Oklahoma City raced out to a 30-19 lead in the 1st quarter, while shooting 65 percent. The Thunder held the Timberwolves to just 34.8 percent and outrebounded Minnesota 13-8.

The Wolves recovered in the second quarter, cutting the lead to just three points at 36-33 before Oklahoma City again took control with a 19-8 run to end the half and led 55-41 at the break.

The Thunder ended up holding Minnesota to just 40.7 percent shooting. The Thunder came in allowing an average of 43.8 percent, third best in the NBA.

Oklahoma City led by as many as 25 points and never trailed. Despite its poor record, Minnesota has been in most of their games lately.

Forward Kevin Love led Minnesota with 19 points and eight rebounds. Al Jefferson contributed 12, while Ryan Gomes and Jonny Flynn added 10 apiece.

The Timberwolves have now lost eight of their last nine games and head back home to host Portland Saturday night.

Oklahoma City has now won 10 of their last 12 and the Thunder will continue their homestand, hosting Toronto Sunday night and then Sacramento on Tuesday.

The Thunder have been able to avoid long losing streaks all season and that's something Durant says he and his teammates vow to continue to do.

"When we've lost games this year we've responded," Durant said. "We've lost so much the last two years, we're tired of losing. We're more focused now. We've just gotta keep working and keep bringing it on defense and good things will happen."
