Trail Blazers-Raptors Preview

Until this past weekend, Chris Bosh's health had not been a concern for the Toronto Raptors. The Portland Trail Blazers, meanwhile, had to suspect newly acquired Marcus Camby would eventually miss some time.

Bosh is expected to be a game-time decision as the Raptors try to continue their success at home Wednesday night in a matchup with a Blazers team that may be without the oft-injured Camby.

After appearing in the first 53 games this season, Bosh has missed two straight with a sore ankle, but Toronto (31-24) has won both of those contests. The All-Star forward, averaging 24.5 points and 11.4 rebounds, may be close to returning.

Without Bosh, it would appear the Raptors are missing an intimidating post presence. Andrea Bargnani, though, had four blocks in Toronto's 109-104 win over Washington on Saturday.

The 7-footer, who moved from center to forward due to Bosh's absence, is averaging 2.5 blocks - one more than his season average - over his last six games.

"Most people look to Chris as being our interior defensive guy," guard Jarrett Jack said. "I thought Andrea, the last two ballgames, has done a great job of being that physical presence we need down low."

Jack had 23 points and eight assists as Toronto won for the 15th time in its last 17 at Air Canada Centre. The Raptors are fifth in the Eastern Conference, four games behind Atlanta.

"We know how desperately we need these wins coming down the stretch, making this final push at the end of the season, especially the ones at home," Jack said. "They're very crucial, they're very vital to how things are going to play out in the standings. We can't let these opportunities slip through our fingers."

Portland (33-26), trying to hold on to eighth in the West, received a scare Tuesday when Camby sprained his right ankle in the first quarter of a 102-93 win over New Jersey. The injury isn't considered serious, but his status for this game is uncertain.

Camby averaged 12.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in his first two games after being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 16 for Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw and cash. Portland has already lost centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla to season-ending knee injuries.

"Hey, Camby, welcome to Portland," coach Nate McMillan said, referring to the Trail Blazers' injury problems this season. "It's amazing what our guys are going through. I think he's going to be OK."

Camby has been plagued by injuries since being drafted second overall by Toronto in 1996. He missed a total of 38 games in two seasons with the Raptors, and has played 63 games or fewer nine times in 13 seasons overall.

If Camby misses any time, Juwan Howard will likely start at center. Howard had nine points off the bench versus the Nets to help the Blazers bounce back after losing four of their previous six.

Brandon Roy scored 28 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 27 and Andre Miller had 20 to lead Portland.

Roy has had 30 points or more in two of his last three games against Toronto. Portland swept last season's two-game series.

Blazers' bench comes up big in win over Raptors

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- As the clock ran down, you couldn't blame Juwan Howard for being anxious to get the show on the road. With the Portland Trail Blazers picking up their second win in as many nights, the 16-year veteran was ready to get to the next destination on their five-game road trip.

"Start the bus up, let's go," Howard said to Nate McMillan, embracing his coach to celebrate Portland's 101-87 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

It was a solid win for the Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back, and with their starters feeling a little sluggish after playing heavy minutes the night before, the reserves -- especially the backcourt-stepped up.

"I thought our bench, Rudy [Fernandez] and [Jerryd] Bayless, those guys did a nice job of coming in and providing some scoring and they had some pretty fresh legs," McMillan said. "The fact that Bosh wasn't here, we certainly tried to take advantage of that. I thought our guys got off to a good start.

While the Raptors were without Chris Bosh for a third consecutive game, the Blazers played without Marcus Camby, both missing the game because of an ankle sprain.

On the same day that the news came out that Fernandez was unhappy with his playing time, he made a strong case for why he should be bumped up on the depth chart, scoring 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Bayless added 11 off of the bench, Andre Miller had 18 points and 10 assists and Brandon Roy led the way with 20.

After Jarrett Jack had been the hero in two Toronto victories without Bosh, he appeared poised to do it again Wednesday night in Toronto until he was inexplicably taken out of the game.

With Portland jumping out to a 17-point lead in the second quarter, the hustle of Amir Johnson and hot-shooting from Hedo Turkoglu brought the Raptors to within six at halftime.

In the third quarter, Jack found his rhythm. He scored or assisted on the Raptors' first seven baskets of the quarter as Toronto trimmed the lead to three before he was taken out for Jose Calderon. With Jack on the bench, the Blazers closed the quarter on a 9-2 run and went into the fourth up 10.

In the final quarter, the Blazers were able to maintain their lead as the Raptors' offense fell apart. Toronto shot 33 percent in the period, making one field goal over the game's final five minutes.

The Raptors shot 44 percent in the loss and failed to top 100 points for the first time in their last 21 games.

Brandon Roy couldn't understand why Jack -- who played two seasons in Portland -- had been taken out in the third when he was rolling.

"I don't know why he was subbed out," Roy said. "He was killing us. We didn't have an answer for him. Coach even came to the sideline and he got upset with us because he was pretty much getting what he wanted. They did us a favor when they subbed him out."

Despite his time on the bench, Jack finished with 18 points and eight assists and said Toronto's turnovers led to the loss.

"We didn't do a good job of taking care of the ball early and it helped them establish the lead that they had at halftime," Jack said. "It's tough to recover when you give the other team an extra possession."

The Blazers scored 17 points off of Toronto's 16 turnovers, while turning the ball over just eight times themselves.

"We were sloppy with the ball," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "We didn't make the second effort plays; the late close outs or the securing of the rebounds. They were more physical, shot the ball better, took care of the ball better than we did and they were better defensively It is tough to win games when you have that."

The praise for the Blazers' bench didn't end with McMillan. Roy was plenty appreciative of his reserves as he works his way back from the hamstring injury.

"The bench was big tonight," Roy said. "I think I just try to go out and play by game to get back in shape, but I think Rudy and Bayless played huge off of the bench. If they can play that well, they'll make my job a lot easier and guys can't kill me as much."
