Lakers-Mavericks Preview

Though they're certainly glad to have Kobe Bryant back, the Los Angeles Lakers fared well without him. They didn't even need a big game from their star to win their last matchup with the Dallas Mavericks.

Bryant, outstanding in his first game back from injury, looks to help the Lakers continue their success against the Mavericks as two of the Western Conference's top teams meet Wednesday night in Texas.

After missing five games with an ankle injury, Bryant hit a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left to lift Los Angeles (43-14) to a 99-98 win over Memphis on Tuesday night.

Bryant, who also tied the game on a 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining, finished with 32 points including the Lakers' final nine.

"It's fun," he said. "It's my responsibility to make plays down the stretch. I enjoy it."

The stellar performance followed his longest absence in five years. Bryant hadn't played since Feb. 5, but the Lakers managed to go 4-1 without him.

The 12-time All-Star was held to 10 points against the Mavericks (36-21) on Jan. 13, but the Lakers got 22 points and 11 rebounds from Andrew Bynum in a 100-95 road victory. The only time Bryant scored fewer points this season was when he had five in a 99-97 win over Charlotte on Feb. 3.

Bryant is averaging 15.0 points - 13 below his season average - and shooting 40.5 percent in three games against the Mavericks this season. Still, Los Angeles has won two of those contests, eight of the last nine in the series and three straight in Dallas.

The Lakers have also won seven of their last eight road games overall.

Dallas will be sporting a different look this time, though. This will be the teams' first meeting since the Mavs acquired Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson in a Feb. 13 trade with Washington. The 7-foot Haywood could be especially valuable against the Lakers, who sport two of the league's top 7-footers in Bynum and Pau Gasol.

The Mavs had envisioned using Haywood and Erick Dampier at the same time against the league's bigger lineups, but Dampier dislocated a finger in a 99-86 loss to Oklahoma City three days after Haywood's acquisition and is expected to miss another 2-4 weeks. Haywood has not disappointed as the new starting center, averaging 11.2 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in five games with the Mavs, who are 4-0 with him in the starting lineup.

He tied his career high with 20 rebounds Monday night as Dallas beat Indiana 91-82. Haywood added three blocks to anchor a defense that was struggling before the trade.

In five games since the deal, Dallas has held each opponent under 100 points. The Mavs' previous eight opponents had all reached the century mark.

"The guy has rejuvenated himself," Dallas guard Jason Terry said of Haywood. "It's funny. When you're on a losing team, people don't see what kind of talent you have. Now that he's with us, he's able to showcase his skills."

Nowitzki, Mavs pick up pace to squeeze past Lakers

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Points have been a rare commodity for Mavericks' opponents since the All-Star break. For Kobe Bryant, it has been that way all season against Dallas.

Dirk Nowitzki had 31 points and Jason Terry scored 30 in a confidence-building 101-96 win Wednesday against the Lakers. It was the Mavericks' fifth consecutive victory, matching a season high, and the sixth straight game that their foe has failed to crack the century mark.

Lamar Odom led six Lakers in double figures with 21 points. Bryant, who returned to the court Tuesday after missing five games with a sprained left ankle, needed 23 shots to score 20 points. In the four games that Western Conference division leaders Dallas and L.A. have split this season, Bryant has averaged 16.3 points on 40 percent shooting (26-for-65), including 2-for-13 behind the arc. He missed his first five shots in this one and finished 9-for-23.

Bryant, who has torched Dallas for 62 and 52 points in the past, appeared a step slow playing the second night of back-to-back road games after his 18-day layoff.

"I thought he got other guys involved," Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said. "He was probably a little fatigued and tried to help other guys get going."

Terry said the Mavericks' game plan was to push the pace and wear them down. Dallas had a 23-15 edge in fastbreak points.

"Their legs were a little weary," Terry said. "They played a tough game (in Memphis) last night and we took full advantage of that. We kept the tempo in our favor and we kept attacking and we were the aggressor."

Los Angeles dropped to 12-12 when scoring less than 100 points. Since acquiring Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson in a trade with the Wizards at the All-Star break, the Mavericks have also held the Thunder, Suns, Magic, Heat and Pacers under triple digits.

"We have been playing pretty good defense with the new guys these five games and tonight was another example where our shots weren't going down, but we relied on our defense and we got some stops," said Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd. "Then we made some big shots down the stretch."

There were eight ties and 24 lead changes in the game. Kidd's 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in the third quarter put Dallas on top for good at 74-72 as the Mavericks improved to 31-3 when entering the fourth quarter with a lead.

Nowitzki's three-point play with 5:52 remaining sparked an 11-2 run that swelled the Mavericks' lead to 95-86 with 2:20 to play. The Lakers responded with an 8-2 spurt that included Odom's three-point play and his 3-point basket. Trailing 97-94, Bryant was off the mark with a game-tying 3-point attempt with 25.9 seconds left.

L.A. committed six of its 17 turnovers in the final quarter and Dallas protected its lead by shooting 14-for-15 at the line in the fourth (7-for-7 by Nowitzki).

"They were more aggressive, especially in the second half," said Lakers forward Pau Gasol. "We couldn't get control of the game."

Kidd continued arguably his best stretch of the season, posting his 18th double-double with 14 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and just two turnovers in 40-plus minutes. He was 4-for-9 from 3-point range and tallied one steal to move into a fifth-place tie on the NBA's all-time list with Scottie Pippen (2,307).

It was Nowitzki's 13th 30-point game of the season, his first since Jan. 18. It was Terry's third 30-point outing and the Mavericks improved to 11-3 when both players score at least 20. Terry scored 18 in the first half and Nowitzki had 19 in the second half.

As is usually the case when Los Angeles comes to town, there was extra energy in the sellout crowd of 20,505 at the American Airlines Center. Even a few celebrities came out for this clash, including musicians Jay-Z and Beyonce and Dallas Cowboys great Tony Dorsett.

Already missing center Erick Dampier due to a dislocated finger, the Mavericks were also without Butler because of a bad reaction to medication, according to team officials. Butler has been starting at shooting guard, averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games with Dallas since being acquired from the Wizards. No other details about Butler's condition were released, but team owner Mark Cuban said it was not an "ongoing issue."

Earlier in the day, the Mavs signed Von Wafer to a 10-day contract. The five-year veteran played last season with the Rockets, averaging 9.7 points in 63 games (11 starts). The 6-5 guard has had stints with the Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets and Trail Blazers.
