Pacers-Bulls Preview

Although Joakim Noah has expressed a strong desire to play more minutes, the Chicago Bulls are being cautious with him as he continues to deal with plantar fasciitis.

A lack of production and minutes from Noah hasn't hurt the Bulls against their next opponent.

In the first of two meetings this week, the Bulls host the Indiana Pacers, who may be without their leading scorer, on Wednesday night.

Chicago (29-27) was taking advantage of a favorable stretch in its schedule before suffering a 101-95 loss at Washington on Monday. The Bulls won their previous four games, all against teams with losing records.

Chicago led the Wizards by 10 at the half, but went more than 6 minutes in the third quarter without a point while being outscored 31-16. Derrick Rose scored nine points during a late run, but the Bulls were unable to get any closer than one in the final minute.

"No way we should have lost this game tonight," said Rose, who finished with 22 points. "I tried, just trying to attack the hole, doing whatever it takes to win."

Noah played 12 minutes and scored six points as the Bulls monitor his minutes because of foot pain. He missed eight games before playing seven minutes against Philadelphia on Saturday. Noah went 0 for 2 in that game, finishing with one point.

"I want to play," Noah told the Bulls' official Web site. "I want to play. What can I say? ... I don't think my foot is going to be 100 percent for the rest of the season. It's frustrating because I want to be out there and I want to help. But I have to be healthy. I've got to play through it. I don't really know what to do."

Noah is averaging 10.9 points and a team-high 11.6 rebounds. He hasn't been much of a factor in two wins against Indiana this season, however. Noah sat out a 109-101 win on Feb. 9 at Conseco Fieldhouse and had four points and five rebounds in 24 minutes of a 104-95 victory in Chicago on Dec. 29.

Rose, meanwhile, has been excellent against the Pacers, averaging 24.5 points and 6.5 assists this season.

Facing a struggling Indiana team without its leading scorer could help the Bulls bounce back. Danny Granger sat out the Pacers' 91-82 loss at Dallas on Monday for personal reasons. It's uncertain if he'll be back Wednesday.

Without Granger, who matched a season high with 36 points in a win over Houston on Friday, the Pacers (19-37) were held below 90 points for the third time in six games while shooting 36.9 percent. They have dropped five of six.

"We couldn't make up the 23 points that he averages," guard T.J. Ford said. "It was tough. We didn't make our shots, so we definitely could have used him."

Ford, who is battling a sore groin, played 21 minutes and led the team with 14 points. Troy Murphy added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bulls certainly wouldn't miss Granger. He's averaged 30.0 points the last three times he's faced them.

Wednesday closes a four-game road trip for the Pacers, who host the Bulls on Saturday. Indiana has lost three in a row at the United Center.

Rose, Deng drive Bulls to home win over Pacers

CHICAGO (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Chicago Bulls scored the game's first two points and never trailed Wednesday, but that does not tell the real tale of the game against the Indiana Pacers, for either team.

After taking a 23-point lead in the first quarter, the Bulls squandered the entire advantage in the second quarter, then got serious again on defense in the second half to forge a 120-110 victory over the endlessly struggling Pacers.

Luol Deng scored a season-high 31 points with nine rebounds and four blocked shots and the Bulls (30-27) won for the fifth time in the last six games. Derrick Rose had 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while Flip Murray scored 16 points off the bench in 32 minutes of playing time.

Danny Granger returned to the Pacers lineup after missing a game due to personal reasons and scored 20 points. Brandon Rush made five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points, and the Pacers (19-38) got 42 points from reserves Luther Head (15), T. J. Ford (14) and Dahntay Jones (13). The Pacers played the game without forward Mike Dunleavy, who was suffering from food poisoning.

The first quarter Wednesday was reminiscent of other recent home games for the Bulls, like their 33-point win over New York Feb. 16 and their 32-point win over Philadelphia last week. The Bulls shot 56 percent for the quarter and led 35-12 with one minute remaining in the quarter.

The Pacers, on the other hand, shot less than 30 percent in the quarter (7 for 24) and that included making their last two shots, both of them 3-pointers, to close to within 19 points, 37-18.

Deng was especially effective, making all four of his shots and three free throws for 11 points and three rebounds in the first quarter.

"I really tried to come out aggressively in the first quarter,'' Deng said. "When they came out to guard me, I was able to get to the basket and when they dropped back I knocked down some shots."

Then, in the second quarter, the Pacers shot 50 percent, and six of their 10 baskets were 3-pointers. Rush made 4of 5 3-point attempts, and the Pacers also got to the line 11 times for 10 points, and finally tied the game at 52-all with two minutes left in the first half.

"We played defense, we challenged shots, some shots fell for us,'' Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "Our defense allowed us to get out on the break and spread the court."

The Bulls, coming off their embarrassing loss at Washington Monday, got the wakeup call they needed in that second quarter Wednesday, and got serious again about defense in the third quarter. The Bulls are definitely a team that feeds offensively off strong defensive play, and they again got hot from the field in the third quarter, led by Deng and Rose.

The Bulls built a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter, and were up 103-88 with 8:38 left. But the Pacers did not fold up their tents, and closed to within eight points with just over a minute left, forcing Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro into a late timeout.

"We were able to come back, but it was too much hard work,'' Ford said. "When you come back from 23 points, once they go on a run you have to try to withstand that again. We just weren't able to handle that in the third quarter."

There was a significant defensive play in the final minutes and it came from Rose. Indiana's A.J. Price was a breakaway with Rose trailing, but Rose caught up to him and got in front of Price under the basket. As Price put on three jump fakes, Rose waited, and when Price finally went up, Rose got the last of 10 blocked shots for the Bulls on the night.

Rose got as close as he has all season to getting his first triple-double, but he was self-effacing when asked about it after the game.

"I think I have only had two in my career, one in grammar school and one in high school,'' Rose said. "Triple-doubles are hard. I just want to win. I wasn't worried about a triple-double."

The Bulls have won 20 of their last 30 games dating back to late December, and are now a game and a half behind Toronto for the fifth spot in the East after the Raptors lost to Portland Wednesday. The Blazers visit the Bulls on Friday.
