The New York Knicks have their sights set on getting at least one bona fide superstar this summer. They already may have landed one.

Tracy McGrady, following an impressive Knicks debut, tries to help his new team snap a six-game losing streak Monday night against the Milwaukee Bucks at Madison Square Garden.

New York (19-35) made three salary-shedding deals prior to Thursday's trade deadline, creating about $32 million in salary cap space to prepare for a free-agent spending spree in July with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh expected to headline the list.

The Knicks acquired McGrady in a three-team, nine-player deal Thursday, as his $22.5 million contract expires after this season. However, the seven-time All-Star has claimed he'd take a big pay cut to stay in New York. He'll have to prove he can come back from microfracture knee surgery that kept him sidelined for all but six games for Houston this season.

McGrady, a two-time scoring champion, made a strong case that he's well on his way to a full recovery, scoring 26 points on 10-for-17 shooting in a 121-118 overtime loss to Oklahoma City. He was in the starting lineup for his first game in a Knicks uniform and played 32 minutes, but McGrady was on the bench for nearly all of overtime.

"He kind of ran out gas towards the end," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Not having played all year, a couple of years almost, 26 points, kind of not bad."

His debut put a charge into Madison Square Garden, and there should be another one Saturday as the Knicks honor the 40th anniversary of their 1970 championship team.

Maybe the presence of those players can inspire New York to snap its season high-tying six-game skid, which started with a 114-107 home loss to the Bucks on Feb. 5.

The Knicks haven't endured a seven-game losing streak since Feb. 29-March 10, 2008. They've dropped six of seven to Milwaukee (26-28), including both matchups this season.

David Lee can't be blamed for New York's recent struggles. The center had 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists Saturday, and he's averaging 25.0 points and 11.2 boards during the losing streak. Lee had 32 points and 15 boards against the Bucks earlier this month.

Milwaukee, winner of five of seven, is also looking to continue getting production from a new addition.

John Salmons, acquired from Chicago in a three-player deal Thursday, had 19 points with seven assists and five rebounds Saturday while making a key steal late to secure a 93-88 win over Charlotte. That came a night after Salmons had 19 points and hit the winning 3-pointer in a 91-85 victory at Detroit.

"He's been a proven scorer in the NBA and we know what he's capable of and that's why we traded for him," said center Andrew Bogut, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds against the Bobcats. "He knows how to make plays, just look at the steal at the end of the game. That's really a four-point play and put the game away for us."

Brandon Jennings might welcome another meeting with the Knicks after scoring 22 points and handing out eight assists against them Feb. 5. In six games since, the rookie guard is shooting 30.6 percent while averaging 12.0 points and 4.3 assists.

Bogut, Bucks too much for Knicks on Legends Night

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Walter Brown championship trophy was displayed at halftime of the Bucks-Knicks game Monday night at Madison Square Garden, but that may be as close as New York fans get to NBA hardware anytime soon.

On a night when the Knicks honored their 1969-70 NBA championship club, the current team could not draw any inspiration.

Behind Andrew Bogut's 24-point, 20-rebound performance, Milwaukee handed New York its seventh straight loss, 83-67, before 19,763 who came to see legendary Knicks Walt Frazier, Willis Reed and Bill Bradley honored at halftime.

"It does [sting more]," said Knicks guard Tracy McGrady, who scored 15 points on 5-for-14 shooting. "You got Willis Reed sitting right there in the front row and the performance that we gave out we definitely wanted to give a little bit more, but it happens."

For the second straight game, McGrady was unable to finish a Knicks' loss at full strength. In Saturday night's overtime loss to Oklahoma City, McGrady played just 19 seconds in overtime because, he said, "I didn't have any legs at all."

Against Milwaukee (27-28), McGrady twice banged his surgically repaired left knee into Bucks' players, once in the first half and again in the second. He played just four minutes in the fourth quarter, when Milwaukee outscored the listless Knicks, 20-12.

He had microfracture surgery on his left knee in February 2009 and said before Saturday's game he "definitely wasn't 100 percent."

McGrady said he didn't really feel the knee injury until halftime, which was extended because of the Legends Night ceremony.

"I came in here [to the locker room] and sat for 15, 20 minutes and then went out," McGrady said. "Late towards the end, I banged knees again so I think coach saw me limping and he just pulled me out."

McGrady hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth and tried to stay in afterward but came out for good at the 3:38 mark.

"He was kind of limping and stuff," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "At that point it seemed like the right thing to do, take him out."

McGrady said he would be ready to go in Tuesday's game at Boston, when the Knicks (19-36) will face former teammate Nate Robinson for the first time.

"As of now, yeah, I feel I can go. I'm not going to rule it out," he said.

The Bucks took a 47-41 halftime lead behind 18 points and 11 boards from Bogut.

"He is a big guy to defend," McGrady said. "He had 20 points and 20 rebounds ... something like that. He is very skilled offensively. He has a knack for the ball."

After trailing by six at the half, the Knicks opened the second half with a 12-4 run, taking a 53-51 lead on a layup by Wilson Chandler.

But almost as quickly, they surrendered a 12-0 Bucks run that put Milwaukee up 63-53.

The Knicks got to within 67-61 on a dunk by Danilo Gallinari that fired up the crowd but they couldn't get any closer. Milwaukee pushed it to 74-61 on a transition bucket by John Salmons.

Salmons added 15 points, Luc Mbah a Moute scored 11 and Carlos Delfino and Ersan Ilsyasova scored 10 apiece.

David Lee had 12 points and 13 rebounds for New York and Eddie House was the only other Knick in double-figures with 10 points.

Sergio Rodriguez started in place of Chris Duhon at the point for the Knicks and finished with eight steals, four points and one assist. Duhon did not play at all.

Still, the Knicks' offense struggled mightily.

"I thought we didn't really have a lot of pop," D'Antoni said. "Guys were hesitating. They just seemed lost."

Milwaukee entered the night one game out of the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference behind Charlotte and remain in the hunt for a postseason berth.

"It's huge anytime you're playing for a playoff seed," Bogut said. "The games are much bigger, the games are more exciting, electrifying, more energy in every building that you go to and every city that you go to. We haven't experienced that in the last couple of years. I think the guys miss it."
