A series of salary-shedding trades have the New York Knicks in position to court two star players this summer, while auditioning another for the next two months. The Oklahoma City Thunder sure are glad one New York can't get is Kevin Durant.

The new-look Knicks will have recent acquisition Tracy McGrady in the starting lineup Saturday night when they face Durant and the red-hot Thunder at Madison Square Garden.

New York (19-34) has long been reported to be preparing for a free-agent spending spree this summer with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh expected to headline the list.

The Knicks made it abundantly clear that's the plan before Thursday's trade deadline, making three deals that would leave them with about $32 million in salary cap space in July. Players such as James, Wade and Bosh would each make a little more than $16.5 million in the first season of a new contract.

"I think that's probably what everything the last few years has been about, getting cap room and setting ourselves up for the summer and trying to create a better atmosphere," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "There's a lot of things that we want to do, but a major component is creating as much cap space as we can."

Proving how much they're gearing toward a big splash in free agency, the Knicks got McGrady solely because his bloated contract expires at the end of the season.

McGrady, meanwhile, will attempt to prove he's still capable of being a star after joining New York in a three-team, nine-player deadline trade with Houston and Sacramento. New York also sent fan-favorite Nate Robinson to Boston in a five-player deal, a day after trading Darko Milicic and cash to Minnesota for Brian Cardinal, who is expected to be released.

McGrady, a two-time scoring champion, played only six games with the Rockets this season while recovering from microfracture knee surgery.

``Physically I feel good, but then again I haven't played in a year and a half,'' McGrady said. ``Even the eight minutes I was playing, you really can't get a feel of how long I can play. But yeah, I think I'm ready to go.''

The seven-time All-Star will get his first chance to impress the Knicks on Saturday, while also attempting to help them avoid their longest losing streak since a season-high six-game slide from Nov. 4-13.

Their skid reached five Wednesday with a 115-109 loss to Chicago, getting swept in the home-and-home set by a team they're expected to compete with in free agency.

While the Knicks are struggling to remain competitive, Durant has the Thunder (31-21) in the thick of the playoff race. They've won seven in a row for their longest streak since a nine-game run from Nov. 5-19, 2004, when the franchise was the Seattle SuperSonics.

Durant had 25 points and 14 rebounds Tuesday to help Oklahoma City beat Southwest Division-leading Dallas 99-86.

"We're on a nice streak right now, but they're a humble group," coach Scott Brooks said.

Durant has averaged 32.1 points and 8.9 boards during the win streak, and he's scored at least 25 in 26 consecutive games. That streak includes a 30-point effort in a 106-88 home win over the Knicks on Jan. 11 - the Thunder's fifth victory in the last six meetings.

Thunder spoil McGrady's New York debut

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- Kevin Durant reminds Tracy McGrady of a younger version of himself.

On the night McGrady made a dramatic debut with the New York Knicks, it was Durant who proved to be the most effective star on stage.

The Oklahoma City standout scored seven of his game-high 36 points in overtime to lift the Thunder to their eighth straight victory, 121-118 in overtime, against the Knicks before a sellout crowd of 19,763 at Madison Square Garden.

"He reminds me of myself when I was younger," McGrady, 30, said of Durant, 21. "The guy is incredible, man. 6-10, 6-11, knocking down some big shots. He's playing with a great deal of confidence right now and when a guy has confidence like that and he's very skilled ... I don't give a damn what you do, it's tough to stop a guy like that and he had it rolling."

Durant has now scored 25 or more points in 27 consecutive games, second only behind Michael Jordan's streak of 40 straight games over the last 30 years. Allen Iverson also had a similar streak of 27 games.

Durant's effort spoiled a great effort by McGrady, who put up 26 points on 10 of 17 shooting, five assists and four rebounds in his first game since Dec. 23 and just his seventh this season.

"There's always going to be a lot of energy in the building with Tracy coming in," Durant said. "He played phenomenal, he played well. But I'll take the win."

A seven-time All-Star and two-time NBA scoring champ, McGrady was acquired Thursday by the Knicks in a three-team deal involving Houston and Sacramento. He played nearly as many minutes in the game (32) as he had all season with the Rockets (35).

McGrady is still recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee a year ago and said before the game he's "definitely not 100 percent."

The Knicks led 103-97 with a minute and a half left in regulation, but McGrady ran out of gas in the fourth quarter, missing two foul shots that would have put the Knicks up by eight points with 1:25 left in regulation.

"That was just a lack of concentration, that's all that was," he said.

"I kept asking him and his legs were gone," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I think you saw it in the foul shots."

Still, the Knicks led 105-102 before Durant drained a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to send the game into overtime. Danilo Gallinari missed a 3-pointer for the Knicks at the regulation buzzer.

McGrady played just 19 seconds in the overtime, while Durant played all five minutes and won the game down the stretch.

After Eddie House, one of five new Knicks acquired at the deadline, hit a jumper off an in-bounds pass from McGrady to give the Knicks a 118-117 lead with 32.6 seconds left in the OT, Durant drained a pull-up jumper to give the Thunder a 119-118 edge.

He added two foul shots for a 121-118 lead with 10.2 seconds left.

The Knicks had two chances to tie the game but House rushed a 3-pointer in the final seconds, and Gallinari failed to hit a 3 from the corner.

"It shouldn't have come down to that," House said. "We gave them a lot of big threes that they hit. We needed to run them off the 3-point line and we didn't. But we'll learn from that. We played hard though."

McGrady didn't attempt a shot in the OT, instead serving as the designated in-bounds passer before subbing out on defense.

"I didn't have any legs at all," he said. "I felt like why be out there and hurt my team. We're in a position to win right now. If I feel like I can't be effective, then there's no need to be out there. It just wasn't the right thing to do. I didn't want to be a hero. It's my first game in God knows how long, but it was a positive thing for me moving forward and I feel good."

House, who won a championship with the Celtics in 2008, was impressive, scoring 17 of his 24 points after the third quarter. He was 4 of 8 from beyond the arc.

David Lee added a team-best 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks (19-35), who lost their sixth straight.

The Thunder (32-21) got a near triple-double of 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds from Russell Westbrook. Jeff Green added 16 points and James Harden had 14 off the bench.

McGrady was the last Knick starter introduced. He received a loud ovation from a Garden crowd that hasn't had a true superstar to root for since Latrell Sprewell seven years ago. Patrick Ewing played his last game for New York a decade ago.

At several points during the game when McGrady was on the bench, the crowd showed their enthusiasm with chants of, "We want T-Mac."

"I haven't felt that good in a while to really be received that way, to hear those chants," McGrady said. "It's been a while since I've been in an arena to really hear that. It really gave chills down my spine."

McGrady and his new teammates are just getting to know one another.

At one point late in the fourth, McGrady dribbled toward the basket and then dished off to House. During a timeout, Lee pulled McGrady aside to chat about how the play unfolded.

"[McGrady] didn't look like he missed a beat," Lee said. "He was very aggressive and made plays for himself and others. I know he had to watch his minutes in the second half and rightfully so, coming back from such a long break. I'm excited for what he gave us tonight."

Now the question will be how McGrady feels Sunday, heading into the Knicks' game Monday with Milwaukee. The final 28 games of the season will amount to a tryout not only for McGrady, but for virtually every player on the roster heading into the summer of free agency.

"That will be a big test," McGrady said of how his body will feel Sunday." I didn't expect to play past 30 minutes. I thought my goal was 20 [minutes] but I felt good that I was able to keep going."
