Having beaten the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA finals, the Miami Heat aren't about to complain about their extensive regular-season failures against Dirk Nowitzki and company.

Even as well as Miami is currently playing, Dwyane Wade's absence may mean those struggles are doomed to continue.

The Heat have won five straight games overall - including their latest without Wade - but they'll again be without their superstar Saturday night as they try to compete a 5-0 road swing and avoid a 12th consecutive regular-season loss to the Mavericks.

Dallas (34-21) had won four straight games against Miami (29-27) heading into the 2006 finals, so it was no surprise when the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 series lead. However, Wade wouldn't let his team lose, averaging 39.3 points as the Heat won four straight games to claim their first championship.

That eight-day stretch now looks like an aberration. The Heat have lost 11 straight regular-season meetings to Dallas by an average of 13.8 points, including a 106-93 home defeat Dec. 11.

Wade has missed three of those losses due to injury, and he'll be sidelined again on Saturday after straining his left calf Wednesday during a victory over New Jersey, Miami's fourth straight overall.

His teammates didn't let him down Friday. With Rafer Alston also sidelined, Michael Beasley scored a career-high 30 points - eight after regulation - to lift the Heat to a 100-87 double-overtime victory in Memphis.

"I like seeing that progress," coach Erik Spoelstra told the NBA's official Web site of Beasley. "He's the 11th youngest player in the league and everyone expects it to happen right now. But there's a growth process. And he knows that with Dwayne out, there's going to be more opportunities."

Miami hasn't won five straight away from home since a six-game run during its championship season.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, didn't look much like title contenders in either their last game before the All-Star break or their first game after it, losing by a combined 49 points.

After a few games to adjust a lineup featuring new acquisitions Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood, though, Dallas is playing well again. Nowitzki had 28 points and Jason Kidd added 18 with 10 assists in a 107-97 win over Phoenix on Wednesday, then the Mavericks outscored Orlando 30-16 in the fourth quarter Friday en route to a come-from-behind 95-85 road victory.

Haywood had 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks against the Magic.

"We're capable of playing good defense and we showed that,'' said Nowitzki, who scored a team-high 23 points. "The guy that really made this trade work for us is Haywood and he showed why tonight. He was battling in there.''

Haywood may find life tougher Saturday against Miami center Jermaine O'Neal, who outscored him 37-8 the last two times they went head-to-head when Haywood was with Washington.

Butler, who spent the first two seasons of his career in Miami, has averaged 14.7 points on 34.0 percent shooting in three games since Dallas acquired him from the Wizards. He scored 16 points Friday and didn't commit a turnover after giving it away six times in his first two games.

Fatigue could be a factor for both teams, as each will be playing its fourth game in five nights. Miami hasn't played four in five nights since March 22-26 - losing by 19 at Chicago to close it out - while Dallas fell 111-95 at Cleveland on Nov. 28 to finish its latest four-in-five stretch.

The Mavericks are 7-7 on the second night of back-to-backs this season, while the Heat are 4-8 with the eight losses coming by an average of 19.9 points.

Mavs cool Wade-less Heat, win 12th straight in series

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Heat managed without Dwyane Wade for a half, but clearly missed their fallen star's ability to attack the rim and get to the line.

The Mavericks halted Miami's season-high five-game winning streak with a 97-91 victory Saturday, their 12th straight regular-season win in the series dating back to March 2004. Dallas was 28-for-33 at the free-throw stripe, compared to the Heat's perfect but paltry 10-for-10 showing.

Too many of Miami's penetration attempts resulted in careless turnovers, with the Mavericks converting 17 miscues into 17 points. The Heat scored just five points off seven Dallas turnovers.

Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 28 points, followed by Jason Kidd with 21 and 11 assists and Caron Butler with 20. Kidd's 17th double-double included 19 points in the second half, 14 in the fourth. Brendan Haywood added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Shawn Marion chipped in 11 as all five Dallas starters reached double digits.

Daequan Cook topped the Heat with a season-high 22 points off the bench. Jermaine O'Neal tallied 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. One night after scoring a career-high 30 points against Memphis, Michael Beasley contributed just 12 points -- only three after the first quarter -- on 3-for-11 shooting.

The starting backcourt of Wade (left calf strain) and Rafer Alston (right hand contusion) both sat out for a second consecutive game due to injuries and both are considered day-to-day. Wade, the league's fifth-leading scorer at 26.1, was the MVP of the All-Star Game last week at nearby Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. He was wearing a walking boot Saturday and was expected to have an MRI when the team returns to Miami on Sunday.

"It's big playing without your best player, the guy you can go to down the stretch and makes plays," Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. "Offensively, we are going to have some difficult games since we don't have our main guy to rely on, but we are going to have to move the ball and everybody has to pitch in."

Both teams were playing for the fourth time in five days coming off the All-Star break. The Heat used a more balanced lineup to combat fatigue, while the Mavs primarily went with a six-man rotation. Miami's bench posted a decisive 46-6 margin -- the lowest bench production all season for the Mavericks -- but experience trumped depth as Dallas won its third straight game.

"When you play Dallas, a veteran team like that on their home court, what they do is test you mentally the whole game," Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They make you focus and concentrate and be able to do that in the heat of the moment, under duress, and the bottom line is they just played better going down the stretch."

Nowitzki and Butler combined to score 24 of the Mavericks' first 25 points, but Miami ended the first quarter with a 17-5 spurt. A runner by Cook with 2.2 seconds left in the half gave the Heat its biggest advantage of the night at 52-44.

With Wade healthy, the outcome might have been different. Miami had been 27-4 this season when leading at the break, including 14-1 on the road. Dallas has been a tough second-half team all year, however, and rallied for its league-leading 14th victory when trailing at intermission.

The Mavericks outscored the Heat 27-12 in the third quarter, a season low for opponents in a quarter. Nowitzki nearly outscored the entire team with 10 points in the period. Miami was just 5-for-13 in the third and turned it over seven times, resulting in 11 points. Dallas ended the frame with a 19-5 run to seize a 71-64 lead entering the fourth. Kidd capped the run with a 3-pointer, ending the Mavericks' 0-for-10 drought from behind the arc.

Including that bucket, Kidd went on to score 14 consecutive points for the Mavericks. After a putback slam by Haslem, his first points of the game, pushed the Heat ahead 74-73 with 6:32 remaining, Kidd answered with a 3-pointer at the 5:59 mark, three free throws at 5:29 and another 3-point bomb with 4:21 left to give Dallas the lead for good at 82-79.

"I'm getting wide-open looks from the three and I've worked extremely hard the last few years on my 3-point shot," Kidd said. "The guys have really encouraged me to take the shot and hopefully that opens up things for the guys inside."

Kidd added three steals, five rebounds, one blocked shot and just one turnover in 40 minutes and said fatigue was not a factor.

"I feel young," he said. "I understand I'll be 37 next month, but right now being around the younger guys I feel fresh and I'm having a lot of fun."
