Suns-Grizzlies Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies spent the All-Star break trying to figure out how they can brush off a four-game losing streak and get back in the crowded Western Conference playoff picture.

Already in the top eight, the Phoenix Suns' focus might instead be on a franchise-altering change.

With Thursday's trade deadline looming and rumors of an Amare Stoudemire deal lingering, it's unclear what direction the Suns will take in a second half that begins Tuesday night in Memphis.

Memphis (26-25) was in seventh place in the West, 1 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Phoenix, on Jan. 27 after an impressive 15-4 stretch, but the teams went into the All-Star break on far different notes.

Yet while the Grizzlies lost six of seven and the Suns (31-22) won five of six, Phoenix's postseason chances could take a major hit before the final two months of the season resume. The subject of plenty of trade chatter last season, more rumors of a move involving Stoudemire have surfaced ahead of this week's deadline, with a potential deal to Cleveland ranking as the most prominent.

The cash-conscious Suns already traded Shaquille O'Neal to the Cavaliers over the summer to rid themselves of his $20 million contract. Dealing Stoudemire, who's making $16.4 million this season and is owed $17.7 million in 2010-11, would leave Phoenix without its top scorer (21.2 points per game) and rebounder (8.6).

"Right now, I'm a Phoenix Sun,'' Stoudemire said after scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds as the West fell 141-139 in Sunday's All-Star game. "If anything changes, I'll play and act the same way.

"I haven't heard nothing solid. I plan on traveling to Memphis with the Suns and playing the Grizzlies.''

Stoudemire has averaged 23.0 points on 71.4 percent shooting against Memphis this season, but the Grizzlies have taken two of the three meetings.

Zach Randolph (23.0 points per game), Rudy Gay (21.0) and O.J. Mayo (20.3) have all thrived offensively against Phoenix, and they combined for 86 points in a 125-118 win at FedEx Forum on Jan. 18.

Center Marc Gasol scored 19 points in each of the Grizzlies' two wins over the Suns.

Randolph was the biggest reason for Memphis' first-half success, averaging 20.5 points, a career-high 11.6 rebounds and shooting 49.8 percent en route to his first All-Star selection.

He hasn't been at his best in February, though, and neither have the Grizzlies. Randolph shot 40.0 percent and averaged 14.0 points during the team's skid heading into the break, including a 108-94 loss to visiting Atlanta last Tuesday.

He had eight points backing up Stoudemire in the All-Star game.

"Everybody coming into the season had no expectations of the Grizzlies,'' coach Lionel Hollins said. "(But) we're set at 26-25. Could we have won more games? Yes. Should we have won more games? I don't know. But I'm excited where we are at versus where we were when I took over this team last year."

The Suns went into the break after a 108-101 home loss to Portland on Wednesday, but won four straight road games before that largely thanks to Stoudemire's 27.8 points per game.

A trade of Stoudemire would certainly figure to hurt Steve Nash's assist totals - he averages 11.1 to rank second in the league - but Robin Lopez has started to show some promise since he was inserted into the starting lineup for good during Phoenix's last trip to Memphis.

The second-year forward scored 19 points in 28 minutes in that game, and has averaged 12.4 points on 64.4 percent shooting over the Suns' last 12 games.

Suns solve Grizzlies to start season's second half

MEMPHIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- As the Phoenix Suns prepared for the post NBA All-Star break, coach Alvin Gentry wanted to impress upon guard Jason Richardson his importance to the team as they try and nail down one of the eight Western Conference playoff spots.

Gentry was well aware of the Suns' success when Richardson has a big offensive night. Going into Tuesday night's game at Memphis, the Suns were 14-2 this season when Richardson scored 20 or more points.

That trend continued as Richardson had a game-high 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor to give the Suns a 109-95 road victory, snapping their two-game skid against the Grizzlies.

"Let's tell it like it is, when J-Rich plays good for us, we're really, really hard to beat," Gentry said. "He's a key, key guy for us. We've talked to him a little bit, telling him how important these last 29 games are going to be, and we've got to try to get him going and get him playing at a high level."

Richardson, whose 12 field goals were a season high, said he took Gentry's words to heart, realizing that he needed to be more aggressive on the offensive end. So from the first time he touched the ball, which resulted in a dunk, Richardson attacked the basket, which later helped open up his outside game. It was his best scoring night since putting in 29 at Philadelphia Nov. 9, 2009.

"I definitely know if I go out there and be aggressive on that end, then I can help this team out,'' Richardson said. "I need to do that a lot more. Sometimes I'm kind of my own toughest critic. I get down on myself. I just realize that it's a game, a game I've been playing all my life. I just have to go out there and have fun like I normally do."

Richardson's teammates also returned to action with a high-energy mindset, realizing the importance of every game from here on out. At 32-22, they currently find themselves in the sixth spot with a game Wednesday at Dallas.

After having their five-game winning streak snapped by Portland in their final game before the All-Star break, the Suns wanted to make sure that loss didn't carry over against the Grizzlies.

Led by All-Star forward Zach Randolph and center Marc Gasol, the Grizzlies had their way in the paint against the Suns in their first three meetings this season, the last two being Memphis victories. This time around, Phoenix wanted to eliminate what it called duck-in shots by both Randolph and Gasol.

All night, center Robin Lopez, forward Amar'e Stoudemire and Louis Amundson off the bench, made it difficult for Randolph and Gasol. The Grizzlies, who lead the league averaging 51 points in the paint, were held to a just 32, shooting just 31.4 percent from there.

"We did a much better job," Gentry said. "The perimeter guys did a much better job of stepping in and helping and taking the initial duck-in away. Because of that, we got them on the clock a couple of times."

Although Randolph finished with his Western Conference-leading 35th double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds (only three offensive), he scored just five points on 1-of-8 shooting in the second half.

Gasol finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds on 4-of-12 shooting from the floor, though he was just 3-of-11 from the free throw line.

"Sometimes there is no explanation," Gasol said. "On offense, we were screwing up. We missed a lot of free throws and easy points. ... I don't know what it is. We definitely are not playing at the level we were playing before. You can blame a lot of things."

The Grizzlies were hoping to comeback from the break re-energized after losing their last four games, and six of seven. And for just over a quarter, they were, building a 32-27 lead early in the second quarter.

But the Suns' bench, led by point guard Goran Dragic, helped lead Phoenix on a 26-6 run to take a 53-39 lead.

After shooting nearly 48 percent in the first half, Memphis shot a dismal 25 percent (12 of 48) in the second half. Rudy Gay led the team with 21 points and O.J. Mayo added 15.

"Tonight, we had trouble putting the ball in the hoop,'' said point guard Mike Conley, who had 10 points and 11 assists. "It was one of those nights. We need to put this one behind us. We need to come out tomorrow because we have another tough game against Toronto.''

The Suns also got 21 points and 10 rebounds from Stoudemire, who continues to be the center of NBA trade rumors before Thursday's trade deadline. It's a situation he's become accustomed to over the years.

"It doesn't bother me," he said. "It's just the unknown, what you don't know. But it doesn't bother me at all. I still enjoy my teammates as if everything is normal here. You never know what's going to happen, but at the same time you just cherish the moment because it's definitely a blessing to be a part of the NBA and to be playing at a high level."

Lopez added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix, while Steve Nash dished out 16 assists.
