AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Pistons emerged from the All-Star break refreshed and refocused on salvaging their season. Minnesota looked annoyed to be back in action.
The Pistons pounded the ball inside. They consistently beat the Timberwolves down the floor. They kept making the extra pass. And that added up to their first lopsided victory in more than three months, a 108-85 romp Tuesday at The Palace.
"The way we shared the ball overall -- 37 assists in 46 field goals -- that's phenomenal," Pistons head coach John Kuester said. "When we continually do that and take care of the basketball, we put ourselves in a position to win. That was as good an overall performance that we've had in quite awhile."
Detroit's assist total obliterated its previous season high of 30.
That was quite a surprise, considering the Pistons had the fewest assists in the league while going 18-33 prior to the break.
Reserve guard Will Bynum notched a career-high 14 assists while the starting backcourt combination of Rodney Stuckey and Richard Hamilton combined for 13 despite sitting out the final quarter.
Garbage time has been a rarity this season for the Pistons. This was just their fourth double-digit victory this season and their first blowout since a 98-75 home victory over Charlotte.
"When we get the ball moving like that, it's tough to beat us because everybody on the floor can make plays," said Ben Wallace, who had eight points, eight rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes. "Nobody on the floor is one-dimensional. Everybody can make plays either for themselves or teammates and that's what we've got to do, continue to share the ball."
Wallace had three dunks, all off Stuckey feeds, during an 18-2 Pistons run to start the second half. That erased a 52-52 halftime tie and turned the game into a rout.
Jonas Jerebko, fresh off his appearance in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend, also scored six points during that span. He finished with a team-high 21 points in just 21 minutes.
"We knew we could play like that," Jerebko said. "We just have to keep it up. Will did a great job of sharing the ball and so did Stuckey. It's a lot of fun when we play together and share the ball like we did. This is how we should play."
Lacking an inside presence, the Pistons have struggled to score all season. But with the Timberwolves' poor rotations, the Pistons guards constantly found open men in the lane. Detroit racked up 60 points in the paint and 26 fast-break points.
They reached the 100-point mark in regulation for the first time in 29 games. The last time the Pistons hit triple digits in regulation was a 104-95 victory over Golden State on Dec. 12.
"We just played consistent," Ben Gordon said. "Even though the score was tied at halftime, we had 19 assists at halftime and we kind of carried that over to the second half. It was the team that was most consistent tonight that got the 'W.'"
Kuester, who was able to limit his starters' minutes in preparation for Wednesday's road game in Orlando, was disappointed the score was tied at halftime. His club responded by holding the Timberwolves to 33 second-half points on 34 percent shooting along with forcing 11 turnovers.
"The one thing we talked about was just tightening our defense," he said. "I thought our energy was much better in the second half."
Kevin Love had 22 points and 15 rebounds off the bench for the Timberwolves but their starters played like they were still on vacation. Head coach Kurt Rambis pulled guards Jonny Flynn and Corey Brewer and leading scorer Al Jefferson early in the third quarter in a desperate attempt to find more defensive intensity.
Rambis' adjustments didn't work and the starting five contributed just 40 points and 10 rebounds.
"We were awful," Rambis said. "Our defense was awful. Our energy level was awful. Our ball movement was awful and our execution was awful."
Fortunately, the Timberwolves can quickly redeem themselves with a road game Wednesday against Washington, which just traded starters Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood.
"More dunks than at anytime in the season," Love said of his team's disastrous outing. "It was like the rookie-sophomore game out there."
