Warriors-Lakers Preview

With the All-Star break behind them, the Los Angeles Lakers are unquestionably focused on one thing - defending their championship. When Kobe Bryant will return to help that pursuit remains a question.

Regardless of whether Bryant comes back Tuesday night, the Western Conference-leading Lakers seem to have a very good chance to begin the second half of the season on a positive note as they host the Golden State Warriors.

Los Angeles (41-13) entered the All-Star break following a 96-81 victory at Utah on Wednesday. Lamar Odom had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Pau Gasol added 22 points and 19 boards as the Lakers won their third straight game without Bryant, sidelined by a sprained left ankle.

"This is a good team no matter who's in or who's out of the lineup," said Odom, averaging 17.0 points and 14.3 rebounds during Bryant's absence. "We've got a lot of guys that can play."

Bryant could miss a fourth consecutive game Wednesday. He played in all 82 regular-season games the last two seasons.

"People make too much of this warrior thing, it's kind of silly," Bryant said during Friday's All-Star media day in Dallas. "If it's an injury that can get better while I continue to play, then I'll continue to play. If it won't, than I can't. It's simple as that."

Los Angeles, which has won 28 of 31 at home against Golden State since 1993-94, could also be without center Andrew Bynum, who has missed the last two games with a bruised right hip.

Gasol, the Lakers' only All-Star game participant after Bryant pulled out of Sunday's contest with his injury, is averaging 25.4 points and 13.8 boards while posting five straight double-double against the Warriors, including two this season.

In the teams' last matchup, Gasol had 27 points and 12 rebounds while Bryant had season highs with 44 points and 11 assists in a 124-118 victory at Staples Center on Dec. 29. It was the Lakers' seventh consecutive win in the series overall.

It seems likely that streak will continue, considering Golden State (14-37) has the league's third-worst record and might be missing its top two scorers.

Monta Ellis, sixth in the NBA with 26.2 points per game, is questionable Wednesday with a sprained left knee, while Corey Maggette could be out for the third straight game with a dislocated left ring finger.

If Ellis and Maggette can't play, rookie Stephen Curry will likely be Golden State's go-to player on the offensive end. With Curry and Maggette sidelined, Curry had season highs with 36 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in a 132-102 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 10 to help the Warriors snap a season-high nine-game slide.

It was the first time a Warriors rookie posted a triple-double since Chris Webber accomplished the feat Dec. 23, 1993.

"It was a lot of fun out there, to be able to perform that well, especially in the situation for us as a team," said Curry, runner-up to Boston's Paul Pierce in the 3-point shootout during All-Star weekend. "I had the ball in my hands a lot more and that allows me to make more plays for myself and for my teammates."

The Lakers are a conference-best 25-4 at home. The Warriors have lost five straight and 13 of 14 on the road.

No Kobe, no problem as Lakers win fourth straight

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- With Kobe Bryant sidelined for the fourth straight game, the Lakers were in a tight contest late in what was an erratic and sloppy game against the Warriors Tuesday.

Behind a career night from Shannon Brown, the Lakers pulled away with a late rally over Golden State to win their fourth straight without Bryant, 104-94, at Staples Center.

"It's one of those games," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "But we managed to play the best of the two teams in the last three and a half minutes or so. Shannon had a real fine game."

After a forgettable outing in Dallas, Brown joked that he had a better dunk in the first quarter -- a one-handed slam -- against the Warriors than during the Slam Dunk contest.

"I would've had a higher score," laughed Brown, who finished with career-highs of 27 points and 10 rebounds on 11-for-19 shooting in his fourth start of the season.

Brown said he has put the All-Star weekend behind him and is concentrating on being "known as a good basketball player rather than a dunker."

After taking a 3-0 season series lead over the Warriors, the Lakers (42-13) will turn their attention to Thursday's bout with the Celtics.

In their last meeting, Los Angeles edged Boston 90-89 behind a game-winning jumper by Bryant, who is still listed as day-to-day with a high left ankle sprain.

"I'm sure he wants to be (able to play)," said Jackson whose team is 26-4 at home this season. "I'm sure he's making every attempt. He's almost doing therapy too much in the process of trying to get this thing better. I think he'll give it a try and we'll see how it goes Thursday."

As for Tuesday's game, it could have easily gone the other way with both teams not playing their best as they combined for 36 turnovers.

Without the services of the team's leading scorer, Monta Ellis (left knee), who missed his second straight game, the Warriors (14-38) still hung tough against the defending champions.

The game was tied 89-89 with 4:27 left in the game as Anthony Morrow, who had a team-high 23 points, and C.J. Watson, who chipped in with 20, kept the Warriors in the game. But the Lakers clamped down on defense late and did enough on the offensive end dumping the ball inside.

The push started with six straight points by Pau Gasol, who finished with 14, and ended with the Lakers going on a 13-2 run to lead 102-91.

In the final four minutes, Golden State went 2-for-9 and had two costly turnovers.

"It was a close game," Morrow said. "We had an opportunity down the stretch, but we couldn't make enough shots."

Before the game, Warriors coach Don Nelson said his rookie Stephen Curry has lived up to all his expectations this season and maybe even more. Curry finished with a triple-double in his last outing and nearly finished with one again -- 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists -- but he struggled in what was his worst shooting game of the season going 5-for-21 from the field.

"He had a nightmare game," said Nelson, whose team has dropped 14 of their last 15 on the road. "I think [Derek] Fisher got in his head a little bit."

A good sign for the Lakers was the return of Andrew Bynum, who missed two games with a sore left hip. Bynum sank his first seven shots and finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Odom also chipped in with nine points and 18 rebounds.

Ron Artest had a solid all-around game and helped carry the Lakers to a 79-73 lead at the end of the third quarter. He scored nine of his 15 points in the period and played stingy defense against Corey Maggette, who had 17 points but on 4-for-13 from the field. Maggette also had six turnovers.

"He told me he didn't pay his keep in the first half the way he played out there," said Jackson of Artest. "He got it going in the second half and did a good job on Maggette and got his offense going."

Though much of the attention heading into Thursday's game against Boston will be Bryant's status, Odom was quick to look at the overall picture.

"We want him to be healthy," he said. "That's the most important thing. This is a long season so it makes no sense to rush him and let him get hurt again. We will buy some time and get victories but we want him to be healthy."

So far the Lakers sans Bryant have done just that.
