Celtics-Kings Preview

In the first game after the 2009 All-Star break, the Boston Celtics lost Kevin Garnett to a knee injury. A year later, they may still be feeling the effects.

After an injury-plagued first half of the season and quiet All-Star game, Garnett and the sputtering Celtics still hope to reestablish themselves as title contenders during the season's second half, which begins with Tuesday night's visit to the Sacramento Kings.

It was during a 90-85 loss at Utah last Feb. 19 that Garnett was initially injured, causing the 2004 MVP to miss all but four remaining games and the playoffs.

Garnett missed nine contests from Dec. 30-Jan. 20 with another knee problem, and he's been held without a double-double in 10 games since returning, averaging 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds.

He started but played just 13 minutes in the All-Star game, totaling four points and three rebounds, and seemed miffed by questions about his health before Sunday's game.

"I'll speak one time about my health. It's great," Garnett said.

The Celtics (32-18) are 5-5 since his return and 9-13 since Christmas as their lead in the Atlantic Division has slipped to four games over Toronto. They're already two losses shy of their total from last season and two over the total from their 2007-08 championship campaign.

"Our expectations are to try to win a championship and be consistent, and that's something we haven't been able to do over the last month or so," Paul Pierce said. "But we're a veteran team, we stick together, and we'll turn this thing around."

Boston will start by trying to avoid a third straight defeat. After a 96-89 home loss to Orlando on Feb. 7, the Celtics went into the break with a 93-85 defeat at New Orleans on Wednesday, with Garnett totaling seven points and shooting 2 of 9 from the field.

"Our starters struggled," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "Kevin struggled in the second half and Paul forced too much due to the struggling of the team."

While Pierce won the 3-point shooting contest on Saturday night, he'd love to share some of his outside touch with teammate Ray Allen, who missed the loss at New Orleans due to back spasms after shooting 38.9 percent from the field and 26.8 percent from 3-point range in his previous 10 games.

Allen has been mentioned in trade rumors ahead of Thursday's deadline. If traded, he would have played his last home game with the Celtics, who also face the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland and Denver on this trip.

Sacramento (18-34) is the weakest opponent on the trip after it lost 18 of 22 going into the break to effectively end its playoff chances. But the young Kings won their last two games and will be trying for their first three-game winning streak since they won four straight from Nov. 25-Dec. 2.

Kevin Martin scored 26 points and Beno Udrih added 22 off the bench as Sacramento won 103-97 at Detroit on Wednesday, prompting coach Paul Westphal to lament the timing of All-Star weekend.

"We're learning and getting good performances from different people," Westphal said. "I hate to see the break coming right now."

The Kings have also been involved in some trade rumors, mostly involving Martin as rookie guard Tyreke Evans continues to emerge. Evans leads all rookies with 20.3 points per game.

He's never faced the Celtics, who've held Sacramento to an average of 77.5 points in four straight wins since they acquired Garnett and Allen. Boston's last visit to Arco Arena resulted in the biggest home loss in Kings history, a 108-63 defeat on Dec. 28, 2008.

Celtics' bench leads the way to close win in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- With the trade deadline looming, Boston's bench is making its case for sitting put.

Led by Rasheed Wallace's 17 points off the pine, the Celtics reserves combined for 44 points in Boston's 95-92 win in Sacramento on Tuesday night.

"It's money time," Wallace said. "Coming down to that crunch time. The first half of the season on some teams you have guys who want to make that All-Star team, guys who are putting up shots freely.

"But in the second half of the season, when those shots are big, and people are depending on those shots to be made, people don't want to take those shots. They depend on the 'star players' to make big shots."

With Thursday's trade deadline approaching rapidly, Wallace made his case for keeping the current roster together, although he understands it's not his decision.

"We in the field, we ain't in the house. If the house feels as though they want to make trades then hey, we're all grown men about it," Wallace said.

"If they do keep us together then I think that will be perfect for us. We already have that niche with one another and you don't have to add a new player or a new attitude."

Boston coach Doc Rivers talked about the importance of the bench, and Wallace, to the team's success.

"I like where Rasheed is trending right now, he's starting to really come on for us," Rivers said. "Rasheed is so important for our team, for a lot of reasons, especially late game situations when you can put all shooters on the floor with Rondo. It makes it very difficult to guard and we still have size."

The Celtics' big three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen shot a combined 13-of-47 from the field.

"We did not shoot the ball well," Allen said. "We missed a lot of layups and easy looks. Myself, I missed a lot of easy looks."

Boston backup guard Eddie House delivered 12 points -- on four 3-pointers -- to help boost the Celtics advantage while he was on the floor.

"Anytime we can stretch the lead that's big for us, we never want to go down as a bench," House said.

House is one of the possible pieces that could be moved at the deadline if the Celtics continue to seek a bigger name guard. Rumored names include the Knicks' Nate Robinson and the Bulls' Kirk Hinrich.

"It can't effect you, just can't think about it," House said. "Just do what you do, if it happens it happens. You just try and play, don't want to think about that and put too much pressure on yourself."

Pressure was the story in the game's final moments, as the young Kings missed costly free throws down the stretch. The Kings missed six of eight free throws in the final minute-and-a-half in the three-point loss.

The Kings, who trailed by as many as 11 points, took the lead with 3:37 remaining on Omri Casspi's 3-pointer. The teams would trade baskets and the Kings led by one point until Paul Pierce hit a 3-pointer atop the arc with 1:38 remaining to give Boston a two-point advantage.

Casspi was sent to the line with a chance to tie with 1:32 remaining but missed both free throws. After blocking Garnett in the post on the defensive end, Kings forward Jason Thompson was fouled in the post and sent to the free throw line with 16.8 seconds remaining. He missed both free throws.

"We make 50-plus free throws after every practice and we keep track of the percentages," Kings Coach Paul Westphal said. "Everyone is a great shooter and we make free throws at a high level, we just have to concentrate and make more free throws and do the same thing in the game."

With six seconds left, Kings rookie Tyreke Evans hit a 3-pointer to close the game to a single point and then fouled sure-shooting Ray Allen who made both free throws to extend Boston's lead to three points.

Casspi was fouled on the inbound and sent to the free throw line. Westphal yelled to the rookie, "Make the first and miss the second!"

Casspi made the first and attempted to miss the second with a hard bank shot -- that went in. Incidentally, it was a shot that Casspi had made in HORSE as part of All-Star weekend, an event with Boston Rajon Rondo.

"We missed free throws and they made theirs," Casspi said. "It was little stuff like that. It's tough. I have made my free throws in around 95 percent of our games. The one I tried to miss tonight, I made it.

"We competed against one of the best teams and to lose the game on free throws (is tough)."

After showcasing his abilities as the MVP of the Rookie Challenge over All-Star Weekend, Evans scored 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and recorded seven assists. Martin scored 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting and didn't play in most of the game's final moments.

Francisco Garcia played for the first time since fracturing his right forearm in the preseason (Oct. 6). The fifth-year player entered to a standing ovation in the second quarter. Garcia played just more than a minute in the game.
