Kings-Knicks Preview

The Sacramento Kings are enduring a dismal stretch on the road. A visit to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Knicks may help them break out of that slump.

Sacramento looks to continue its recent strong play over the Knicks in New York and snap an 11-game road losing streak Tuesday night.

The Kings opened a three-game trip Sunday afternoon and lost 115-104 to Toronto, falling to 3-22 away from home with their sixth straight defeat overall. Sacramento has dropped 20 of 23 since being a surprising one game under .500 in late December.

Against the Raptors, Sacramento (16-34) led by three heading into the fourth quarter before being outscored 31-17 in the final 12 minutes.

"We couldn't finish the deal and it's primarily because we couldn't get the stops we needed," coach Paul Westphal said. "It was about 42 or 44 minutes of really good basketball for us. The four to six minutes that wasn't gives us a loss."

The Kings have been outscored 57-38 in the fourth quarter of their last two road losses.

"That's when our problem is," rookie guard Tyreke Evans said. "Coach always comes into the locker room and says, 'We're almost there.' That's not going to get us where we want to be. We've got to find a way to work hard and pull together down the stretch."

One bright spot for the Kings on Sunday was the play of Kevin Martin, who scored 24 points on 7-for-18 shooting. Martin, averaging 20.7 points while playing in just 18 games due to a left wrist injury, had scored 16.3 points and shot 35.6 percent in his previous 12 contests.

Martin scored a game-high 30 in Sacramento's last visit to MSG, a 121-94 win March 20. It was the Kings' fourth victory in five games at New York after dropping 20 of their previous 21 trips.

The Knicks (19-31) return home after losing 113-106 to Cleveland on Saturday night, allowing LeBron James to score 47 in losing for the fifth time in six games.

New York was also playing unexpectedly well earlier this season, going 12-6 from Dec. 1-Jan. 7 before dropping 11 of its last 15.

Despite that poor stretch, the Knicks remain just 4 1/2 games behind the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We'll just try to get back to where we were a month ago," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We have the ability to be able to fight and scrap ... so the rest of the way out, starting Tuesday, we have to get back to what we do."

Sacramento beat the Knicks 111-97 at home Nov. 25 behind 24 points from Donte Greene, who made a career-high six 3-pointers. The Kings have won nine of the past 12 meetings.

Evans takes over, powers Kings' overtime win over Knicks

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- Maybe Paul Westphal and his staff should tell Tyreke Evans there are three minutes remaining in every game right from the start.

The Sacramento Kings rookie seems to play his most aggressive ball down the stretch.

Evans scored 14 of his team-high 27 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Kings snapped an 11-game road losing streak by beating the Knicks, 118-114, on Jewish Heritage Night at Madison Square Garden. The crowd of 19,531 included actors Dustin Hoffman, David Duchovny and Julia Stiles.

"[Evans] just kept going to the basket," Westphal said of Evans, the No. 4 pick in last year's NBA Draft. "He's a ferocious competitor. He was dead tired, but he found reserve in him somewhere."

Donte Greene added 24 points and Omri Casspi, the first Israeli player in the NBA, added 18 in front of a large contingent of Jewish fans. After not starting for missing the shootaround, Kevin Martin scored 17 points off the bench, including Sacramento's first nine points in the extra period. The Kings outscored the Knicks 13-9 in the OT.

The Knicks led by 15 points midway through the fourth period and held a 101-93 edge with about four minutes left in regulation.

Evans scored 10 straight points for the Kings (17-34) on a variety of aggressive drives to the basket, bringing the Kings to within 105-103. Evans then drove and dished to Jason Thompson (12 points) for a two-handed flush that tied the game at 105 with 25.1 seconds left.

"We just never gave up, we just kept fighting, trying to get the win," Evans said. "I think the main thing that got us the lead was me pushing the ball and getting easy buckets and getting easy transition points."

The Kings also benefitted from two huge miscues by the Knicks (19-32), who have now lost 10 of 13 and are a season-worst 13 games under .500.

With the game tied at 105, the Knicks called a timeout and then watched as Chris Duhon dribbled around the Sacramento zone without passing before lofting an airball 3-pointer that was rebounded by the Kings with 2.3 seconds left.

"They guarded it well and I just looked up, saw the shot clock going down and I was just trying to get it up on the rim ... give us a chance off the rebound," Duhon said.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said the play was to run a pick-and-roll and eventually get the ball to the rim. Even Evans was surprised by Duhon's shot.

"Definitely, I thought they were just going to try to get the ball to Al Harrington and just let him create or a pick-and-roll with David Lee, but they took the three with Duhon and we'll live with that, though," Evans said.

Trailing 116-114 in the extra period, the Knicks made another critical error.

On a night when Wilson Chandler scored a career-high 35 points and Lee had 21, Jared Jeffries lofted an ill-advised 3-pointer with 32.9 seconds left.

"Nate [Robinson] threw it back to Jared for whatever reason and he didn't make the shot," D'Antoni said.

The Knicks entered the night 4 1/2 games back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but you have to wonder about the team's overall mental state heading into the All-Star break.

"No excuse," D'Antoni said. "For whatever reason a lot of spirit went out of this dog and we're just not fighting."

Evans, meantime, boosted his case for NBA Rookie of the Year honors while Casspi basked in the glow of the New York fans.

"How can he not be?" Westphal asked of Evans. "He should be unanimous."

Added Evans: "That's not my main focus to win Rookie of the Year, but to play hard and get wins for this team."

Notes: Knicks forward Danilo Gallinari left with a minute left in the third quarter with a sore forearm. X-rays were negative.

"It was the same thing that happened in the game against Orlando," said Gallinari, who shot a free throw left-handed before he departed because the pain was so acute. "It's tough to find a reason why the muscle in the arm is weak, so probably with a couple of days it's going to be back to normal."

Gallinari was uncertain of his status for the 3-Point Contest at All-Star weekend.

"I don't even think about that," he said. "I will think about getting treatment tomorrow [Wednesday] morning with the staff. I am trying to get this arm back healthy as soon as possible.

Knicks guard Nate Robinson said before the game that he would decide afterward whether his injured groin would allow him to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest.

Robinson declined to speak with the media after the game but he is still scheduled to go to Dallas, according to the Knicks.
