Timberwolves-76ers Preview

The Philadelphia 76ers may have taken Minnesota lightly last month. They certainly can't overlook the Timberwolves now.

Enjoying their best stretch of the season, the 76ers return home Tuesday night to face a Timberwolves team that has every reason to be confident as it tries for a sweep of the season series.

Philadelphia (19-31) has won a season-high four straight after losing five of its previous seven. The 76ers haven't won five in a row since a seven-game run Jan. 6-17, 2009.

"We're in a good groove right now," point guard Lou Williams told the Sixers' official Web site. "Hopefully we can bottle it up, continue on that road and try to finish out these last two games before the (All-Star) break and create some momentum."

Philadelphia returns to the Wachovia Center after overcoming a 13-point deficit to win 102-95 at Houston on Saturday night.

In their last matchup with the Wolves (13-38), though, the 76ers blew a 20-point lead on the road in a 108-103 overtime loss Jan. 18 at.

Minnesota lost its next five, but the Western Conference's worst team hasn't been defeated since.

The Wolves have won four in a row, one shy of their longest winning streak from last season. The current streak includes a 109-102 victory over Memphis on Saturday night and a 117-108 win at Dallas the previous evening.

Minnesota is 4-5 against the current top four teams in the West - accounting for nearly one-third of its total wins in 2009-10.

Ryan Gomes had 26 points and Al Jefferson added 23 in the victory over the Grizzlies. Jefferson, who has struggled at times following reconstructive right knee surgery last season, is shooting 62.3 percent (33 for 53) over his last four games.

"When he gets it going," Wolves guard Corey Brewer said, "he can really get it going."

Jefferson has posted 17.8 points per game, 5.3 fewer than last season. Though Jefferson has been mentioned in trade rumors, Minnesota president of basketball operations David Kahn insists he isn't shopping the veteran big man.

"We have not had one discussion that we initiated involving Al Jefferson," Kahn said. "Not one. And yet it hasn't stopped people from saying that he has been talked about in trades. Not true."

Kevin Love's development is perhaps one reason some believe Jefferson is a candidate to be dealt. They essentially play the same position, and Love is four years younger.

Love missed last month's matchup with Philadelphia due to an illness. Wolves point guard Jonny Flynn had a career-high 29 points and nine assists in that contest.

Andre Iguodala, meanwhile, led the Sixers with 17 points. Iguodala's scoring is down slightly - he's averaging 13.6 points over his last nine games - but he has been valuable to Philadelphia in other ways.

"He's first a defender for us," coach Eddie Jordan said. "He's our defensive catalyst. When he gets to people, gets deflections and steals the ball, that's big for us. We don't look for him to be a high-volume shooter or anything like that, just a guy who does a lot of things well."

Philadelphia is allowing an average of 93.5 points over its last six games, and the only time it's yielded 100 in that span was in an overtime contest - a 106-103 victory over Chicago last Wednesday.

The Sixers have played their last three games without Allen Iverson, who has been away from the team because one of his children is ill. His status is uncertain.

Sixers blow past Wolves for fifth straight win

PHILADELPHIA (NBA.com exclusive) -- This time would be different.

This time had to be different.

On Jan. 18, the Philadelphia 76ers blew a 17-point halftime lead to the Minnesota Timberwolves in an overtime loss at the Target Center. On Tuesday at the Wachovia Center, the Sixers again built a large halftime lead, this time a monstrous 22-point cushion and unlike the previous encounter, never looked back on the way to a 119-97 win.

The win was a season high fifth in a row for the Sixers (20-31) as Andre Iguodala led the way with a game-high 24 points and Elton Brand contributed 21. In a game the Wolves (13-39) never led and never crept within double digits after 11:10 remained in the first half, the biggest question of the night was how bad the roads to Philadelphia International would be as the latest Nor'easter hit the region already blanketed in record snowfall amounts.

"We want to get out of here first with all of this snow," Sixers head coach Eddie Jordan said. "We know as a staff what is coming ahead. We want our guys to feel good about tomorrow and carry this momentum into next Tuesday's game (against Miami)."

"The first game we had a good lead and they came back on us and that was in the back of our minds," Iguodala said. "We wanted to come out of here with a win and get ready for tomorrow.

"We've had a problem holding big leads all year. I think recently we've been able to establish ourselves as a team that can hold a lead. Our defense is a little better. The main thing is we can't get comfortable because we still have a long way to go."

After Minnesota forward Brian Cardinal opened the second quarter with a 15-footer that pulled the Wolves to within 30-23, the Sixers offense promptly went on a 17-2 run fueled by 15 points from the bench including nine points from center Jason Smith. The production came as a surprise to the Sixers as Smith, who didn't score the rest of the night, had gone scoreless in nine of 12 games in which he had appeared.

"Coming back from oblivion?" Smith said with a laugh as he repeated the question. "I just try and give the team as much as I can, come off the bench and give some energy. You just have to keep yourself ready for anything."

The second quarter proved to be the best 12-minute effort of the season for the home team as the Sixers scored a season-high 43 points en route to a 73-51 lead at halftime. With both teams slated to fly out later in the evening, the second half lacked a certain intensity but Minnesota head coach Kurt Rambis felt it was more than just one half for his team.

"I wish I could blame everything on the second quarter," Rambis said. "I don't think we came out and played hard from the beginning of the ball game. I was disappointed with our effort throughout the entire ballgame."

That said, Jordan remained concerned as the Sixers have exhibited difficulty throughout this season maintaining leads.

"We did not really talk about [the first game]," Jordan said. "But at halftime we had 73 points and we certainly looked at the defensive numbers and we saw [the Wolves] were shooting 45 percent from the field and 50 percent form three for 50 points. We knew in our last four wins we had held our opponents to the low forties and we wanted to get back to that."

After the game Jordan again pointed to the 12-game stretch ending with Wednesday's game in Toronto as the only concern for the Sixers, who still harbor hopes at making the playoffs. With one game left the Sixers are 7-4 in that time and certainly have momentum heading into the break.

"I'm happy we have got a little bit of a wave," Jordan said. "But I'm not going to be real happy until we get to .500. That is the mindset of where we need to go. Right now, it is good that we are playing with a good personality and a good mindset.

Notes: Earlier in the day the Sixers announced that All-Star guard Allen Iverson would not be available for the team's next game at Toronto and would return Feb. 16 against Miami. Iverson has now missed four games while dealing with the lingering illness of one of his children. Iverson's availability for the All-Star game at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas has yet to be determined.
