Mavericks-Nuggets Preview

The Denver Nuggets were getting by well enough with Carmelo Anthony out of the lineup, but couldn't overcome playing with both he and Chauncey Billups in street clothes in their last contest.

The Dallas Mavericks would certainly prefer to see the All-Star duo on the bench again.

Both Anthony and Billups are questionable for the Nuggets' game Tuesday night against Dallas, which tries to become the first visiting team in three years to win twice in a season at the Pepsi Center in a battle of division leaders.

Anthony has missed 13 of Denver's last 19 games with various injuries - the last eight because of a sprained left ankle - but Billups kept the Nuggets (34-17) rolling even without the NBA's second-leading scorer. Billups averaged 23.6 points and 7.7 assists as Denver went 5-2 in the first seven games Anthony missed, and scored a career-high 39 points in a 126-113 win at the Los Angeles Lakers last Friday.

However, Billups suffered a sprained right ankle in the win over the Lakers and sat out the following night as the Nuggets lost 116-106 at Utah. Rookie backup Ty Lawson, averaging 19.4 points in his last seven starts when Billups has been hurt, had a career-high 25 points in a losing effort.

"I thought we kept fighting and fighting. We didn't have a lot of things go our way,'' Nuggets coach George Karl said. "We're banged up. We need a couple of days off.''

While Denver is 8-5 without Anthony in the lineup, it's just 3-6 when Billups is sidelined.

Neither player is sure to play in this contest, though Anthony appears to be targeting either Tuesday or Thursday against San Antonio to return prior to this weekend's All-Star break. Billups is listed as probable despite not practicing Monday, when he instead received treatment for both ankles.

Billups missed the Nuggets' first meeting with Dallas (32-19) on Dec. 27 with a strained left groin. Anthony struggled, going 5 of 19 and scoring 16 points before fouling out in a 104-96 home loss, which ended Denver's five-game series winning streak. It also means Dallas now has a chance to become the first visitor to win at Denver twice in a season since 2006-07, when Utah and Houston did it.

The Mavericks had lost four of five heading into their second meeting in six days with Golden State on Monday. Dirk Nowitzki battled foul trouble and was limited to 15 points, but Jason Terry scored a season-high 36 and Drew Gooden and Josh Howard combined for 49 off the bench to lift Dallas to a 127-117 victory.

Terry scored 10 of his points in the fourth to lead the Mavericks back from an eight-point deficit through three quarters.

"This was a bit of a gut check for us,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "... We'll look to build off this. It's been a tough 10-day stretch. We've had struggles but it's a long year.''

Gooden played a big role in Dallas' earlier visit to the Pepsi Center. Nowitzki and Terry combined to shoot 11 of 27, but Gooden made all eight of his shots from the field and finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mavericks are 17-3 when Gooden scores at least nine points.

Denver shot 5 of 17 from 3-point range during its first meeting with Dallas - a good indicator that Karl's team is in trouble. The Nuggets are 13-15 when they fail to make at least seven 3-pointers, compared with a 21-2 mark when they make seven or more.

Nuggets blow out Mavericks, pad cushion for playoff seeding

DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- Coming to Denver the night after playing on the West Coast is a dreaded scenario.

George Karl knows it all too well.

"That trip, the first time I did it, I laugh because I called practice for the next day," the Nuggets coach said. "I walked into practice and said 'Go home. I apologize.' It's not easy."

For the Mavericks, it was downright horrifying, and not just because the Nuggets routed them 127-91 Tuesday night. The loss gives Denver a three-game lead over them in the Western Conference standings, and it could have bigger implications come playoff time.

"If you look at the Western Conference it's the same as last year, a lot of teams vying for a playoff position so every game is going to mean something," Dallas guard Jason Terry said.

The Mavericks remember last year all too well, when the Nuggets, the higher seed in the second round, beat them in five games. The way things are shaping up in the West this year, another second-round matchup is possible.

If Tuesday was a preview, 2010 could be a repeat of 2009. The Nuggets dominated the Mavericks from the start, leading by as many as 39 in the second half and sitting most of the starters for the fourth quarter.

Carmelo Anthony, back in the lineup after missing eight games with a sprained left ankle, didn't need to have a big night for his team to win.

"After sitting out two weeks, it's kind of hard to come back and be yourself again," said Anthony, who had 19 points and six assists. "When the team's playing so well, you don't want to step in and overshadow anything. Just try to get everybody involved and let everybody continue building their confidence."

There was a lot of confidence on the Nuggets side. Six players scored in double figures, and despite playing without Kenyon Martin (sore left knee), their best defensive player, they held Dirk Nowitzki to 17 points on 5-for-17 shooting.

"I thought Chris (Andersen's) job on Dirk was pretty good," Karl said. "The combination of Malik Allen, Nene and Chris, we battled him and made him shoot a low percentage."

Without Martin things were supposed to be tougher for the Nuggets, but Dallas had its own injury woes. Erick Dampier (left knee) and Shawn Marion (lower back tightness) didn't dress, and on the second day of a back-to-back the Mavericks could have used them.

Without Dampier's inside presence Nene scored 21 points and Andersen had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

"Dampier's a very important part of our team. Not having him tonight, it makes it a lot tougher with guys like Nene and Andersen," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "Shawn's situation tonight contributed. We need to get ourselves healthy coming out of the break."

The Mavericks also need to regroup. After starting the season strong they are 10-11 since Dec. 31 and their lead in the Southwest Division is shrinking. San Antonio is just two games back, so getting off to a good start after hosting the All-Star Game on Sunday is vital.

"Coming out of the break every game is critical," Terry said. "If you look at the Western Conference, the race is nip and tuck."

The good news for Dallas is it doesn't have to play again in Denver a night after playing in the Pacific Time Zone. Losing an hour of the day and playing at altitude is tough, especially when the Nuggets had two days off.

"You can't possibly think you can get in 5:30 in the morning the day of the game and come out and be able to perform," Terry said. "The odds are working against you and you fight as hard as you can. They played well enough and didn't let us hang around. If they let us hang around it's a different story. We were fighting an uphill battle from the jump ball."

The Mavericks have a chance to get revenge when the teams have their final meeting in Dallas on March 29. By then, the playoff picture will be clearing up and the winner of that game -- and the season series -- could be hosting a couple of playoff rounds.

"We know this team's probably going to be with us come April, and if the tiebreaker comes down to one game in March," Karl said. "It'll be one of those playoff games in March."
