Spurs-Lakers Preview

Back spasms forced Kobe Bryant to miss the fourth quarter of a loss at San Antonio last month. It's uncertain if his latest injury will keep him out entirely against the Spurs this time.

Bryant could miss his second straight game as the Los Angeles Lakers face the Spurs on Monday night at Staples Center.

Bothered by a sore left ankle he originally suffered at Philadelphia on Jan. 29, Bryant sat out Los Angeles' 99-82 win at Portland on Saturday. It was the first game the 12-time All-Star missed since March 7, 2007, because of a suspension.

Averaging 28.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists, Bryant was to be evaluated Sunday. It will likely be up to Bryant to determine if he's healthy enough to return as the Western Conference-leading Lakers (39-13) try for a fourth consecutive home victory over the Spurs.

"I would say he is day-to-day," coach Phil Jackson told the Lakers' official Web site. "We have an opportunity here with two games before the All-Star break and there is some time there if he does need to take a longer time, we're trying to give him the liberty to do that."

Bryant, who hasn't missed back-to-back contests since the sitting out the first two games of the 2006-07 season with a knee injury, is averaging 28.8 points in his last nine home games against San Antonio.

He scored 16 before leaving for good with back spasms in the third quarter of the Lakers' 105-85 loss at San Antonio on Jan. 12. The Spurs shot 57.3 percent overall and outscored Los Angeles' 30-22 in the fourth quarter.

The Lakers, though, proved it can win without Bryant. Ron Artest had 21 points and Lamar Odom matched a career high with 22 rebounds against Portland. Los Angeles held the Trail Blazers to 43.7 percent shooting and outrebounded them 47-30

"We reacted well,'' said forward Pau Gasol, who missed the January loss to San Antonio with a hamstring injury. "We played hard, we played well.''

The Lakers will try to avoid a second straight loss at Staples Center after having their eight-game home winning streak snapped in a 126-113 loss to Denver on Friday. Los Angeles, though, has held San Antonio to 92.4 points on 40.5 percent shooting while winning four of five at home over the Spurs.

The Spurs (29-20) won't have to travel for this contest after beating the Los Angeles Clippers 98-81 on Saturday at Staples to improve to 2-1 in a season-high eight-game road trip. George Hill had 22 points and Tony Parker added 14 with 14 assists in his second game back from missing three with a sprained left ankle.

In his second season, Hill has emerged of late, averaging 17.1 points on 50.8 percent shooting while starting the last 10 games.

"George Hill's just a fantastic basketball player,'' coach Gregg Popovich said of the club's 2008 first-round pick who averaged 5.7 points during his rookie season. "We're really thrilled with his progress in his shooting and his approach to the game.''

Tim Duncan had 25 points with 13 rebounds, Parker added 22 and Hill 13 last month against the Lakers. Duncan, though, has a combined 31 points in his last two road games versus Los Angeles.

Balanced Lakers pick up the slack to beat Spurs

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich may have portended the outcome against a short-handed Laker team in his pregame address to the media.

"If you win the game I'm not sure you can take a whole lot from it," he said "But if you lose the game you feel like hell."

No doubt the Spurs were frustrated at a lost opportunity Monday at Staples Center. Without the services of Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum, the Lakers had a balanced attack and went on to defeat the Spurs, 101-89, at Staples Center.

"It's reassuring to the rest of the team," said Pau Gasol of being able to receive contributions from the entire team and beat a tough Spurs team.

Added Shannon Brown: "We can go deep into our bench and everybody on our bench can produce."

Five Lakers finished in double figures with Gasol leading the way with 21 points and 19 rebounds in 46 minutes. He also chipped in with a season-high eight assists and five blocks. Lamar Odom added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar finished with 13 apiece.

The Lakers (40-13) have now won four straight against the Spurs (29-21) at home and have tied the season series 1-1 after losing 105-85 at San Antonio.

Maybe more importantly, the Lakers have put together a pair of victories without their leading scorer Bryant, who remains day-to-day with a sprained left ankle, and Bynum, who is out with a bruised right hip.

"I can take my time and make sure it's healthy," said Bryant of resting his ankle with the Lakers playing well in the meantime. Bryant added that he will determine on Wednesday before the game if he will suit up against the Jazz.

In the loss, Manu Ginobili had a team-high 21 points and Tony Parker added 20 points and eight assists, but he also had six turnovers. Tim Duncan logged 16 points and 15 rebounds.

This game was especially disheartening for the Spurs, who have recently lost to the Blazers, who were missing Brandon Roy, and the Nuggets without Carmelo Anthony. The Spurs are now 10-11 on the road and have dropped six of their last 11 games with a tough contest at Denver on Thursday.

"For some reason," Popovich said. "I'm not getting through to this group ... it's about mental toughness and physical toughness and passion and the group jelling together and playing for each other. We're not doing it."

The Lakers held a slim 73-68 lead at the end of the third quarter and managed to close the deal with their balanced attack. In the fourth quarter, there were several times the Lakers had their double-digit lead whittled down to a three-possession game. But it was Gasol's dominance on the inside and Farmar's penetration which squashed any type of comeback by San Antonio.

"We finished, I thought, relatively well for a game that seemed to be a struggle for much of the second and third period too," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

No play showed the Lakers wanted it more than in the final two minutes of the third quarter. Los Angeles had four offensive rebounds on one possession before Ron Artest sank a bankshot and converted the three-point play.

"We were hustling," said Artest, who finished with 18 points. "That was a fun sequence right there."

The way that play went down may have typified what has been going wrong with the Spurs.

"We're just playing soft," Parker said. "They just outplayed us and outhustled us."

Spurs guard George Hill, who came in scoring in double digits for 10 straight games and finished with five points, and Richard Jefferson, who had nine, were missing for much of the game. The pair shot a combined 4-for-17 and committed nine fouls.

"Coach said it best: 'We're playing soft,'" Jefferson said. "And that starts with me. I haven't shot the ball well the last 10 or so games."

The Lakers' win was a total team effort. There were timely baskets from several Lakers, including Sasha Vujacic. In the second quarter he scored eight points in a two-minute span when the Lakers found themselves down by as many as nine.

"Sasha contributed the most tonight," said Jackson, adding later, "It is always good for a ball club to feel like they rally [together] when two starters are out."
