Heat-Bulls Preview

Dwyane Wade admitted following the Miami Heat's last game that they just aren't at the same level as some of the NBA's elite.

However, Wade has made sure they've matched up pretty well against the Chicago Bulls over the last two seasons.

The Heat look for their sixth win in seven games against the Bulls when they visit Chicago on Saturday night, trying to avoid a fifth straight loss.

Miami has dropped six of seven overall, and is coming off back-to-back losses to the top two teams in the East, suffering a five-point loss at Boston on Wednesday before falling 102-86 at Cleveland on Thursday.

The Heat (24-26) have been held to 86 or fewer points in three of four games during the skid. Wade scored 24 points Thursday, but was held to six in the second half as the Cavaliers took control.

"This team is just better than us," Wade said. "You have to be realistic. I understand (Cleveland) has NBA championship aspirations. We don't have that. We're focusing on trying to get to the playoffs and this team is trying to get to the championship. It's totally different."

Wade is averaging 24.5 points in the last four games while committing 20 turnovers. In the previous five contests, he averaged 29.6 points while finishing with 11 turnovers.

The slump has dropped the Heat from fifth place in the Eastern Conference to a tie with the Bulls for seventh. This is Miami's longest losing streak since a seven-game slide March 26-April 6, 2008.

While Miami had trouble against two of the NBA's contenders, it played well against Chicago earlier this season. The Heat won 95-87 on Nov. 1, led by 25 points from Wade, who is averaging 31.0 points in his last six games against the Bulls (23-25).

Derrick Rose, the reigning rookie of the year averaging a team-high 19.8 points per game, scored eight on 4-of-15 shooting in that contest.

The Bulls come in having dropped three in a row. They lost 91-81 at Atlanta on Friday, missing all 10 3-point attempts - the first time they've gone without one since Dec. 30, 2006.

The Bulls, who led by six entering the fourth quarter, were missing center Joakim Noah (foot) and were outrebounded 44-40 while giving up 48 points in the paint. For the season, Chicago is among the top 10 in the NBA in defending the paint, allowing 39.6 points per game, and is first in rebounding with 45.5 per game.

Noah isn't expected to return until after the All-Star break because of plantar fasciitis. Brad Miller started in his place and had 10 points, all in the first half.

"We wasted, I thought, a pretty good effort,'' said coach Vinny Del Negro. "Too many (Hawks) rebounds. Too many second shots. We hung in there. But in the fourth quarter they showed why they're one of the better teams."

Rose, who finished with 19 points, has failed to reach 20 points in three of the last four games after averaging 26.3 in the previous seven games.

Bulls break losing streak, move past Heat in East

CHICAGO (NBA.com exclusive) -- A team in need of a victory was destined to win Saturday when the hurting Chicago Bulls hosted the struggling Miami Heat.

Despite missing two frontcourt contributors - one to injury and one to suspension - the Bulls beat the visiting Heat 95-91 to end their three-game losing streak. The Heat, meanwhile, fell for the fifth consecutive game.

The Bulls played without starter Joakim Noah due to plantar fasciitis and reserve Tyrus Thomas due to a one-game suspension for "conduct detrimental to the team". They were outrebounded 52-41 and outscored from 3-point range 21-3, but played better possession basketball and, as a result, made a big move in the standings.

The victory allowed the 24-25 Bulls to move ahead of the 24-27 Heat and the 24-25 Charlotte Bobcats into sixth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Luol Deng scored 25 points, making nine of 11 free throws, and Derrick Rose had 24 points for the Bulls. Jermaine O'Neal had 24 points and 16 rebounds for the Heat, which got 20 points and eight assists from Dwyane Wade, who was only seven for 21 from the field.

The Bulls were playing their fourth game in five nights. The three previous games were losses (two of them probably should have been wins) but the Bulls showed the wherewithal to get the victory they needed Saturday.

"It definitely showed a lot about our team,'' Bulls center Brad Miller said."With what we got done on the road (five-game win streak) and then to hit a little bit of a rough spot, it was great to come out here and get this win."

"It was a big win for us,'' Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We will be in a fight with Miami all year."

Of the Heat's five consecutive losses, four of them have been on the road, including games at Boston and at Cleveland. Coach Erik Spoelstra said the Heat need a significant change to alter their fortunes.

"We have lost our way,'' Spoelstra said."We will find our way again. More than anything, there has to be a mindset change. When you get into a malaise like this, you forget your way."

The Heat finished with 17 turnovers to just eight for the Bulls. Michael Beasley led the Heat with four turnovers.

With Noah and Thomas out, the Bulls had a front-line rotation of Miller, Luol Deng, rookie Taj Gibson and Chris Richard, whom they called up last week off their NBA D-league team. Miller led the group with 13 points, eight rebounds and a surprising five steals, while Richard contributed seven rebounds in 20 minutes before leaving the game with a bloody nose.

"Brad played a lot of minutes last night (40 in loss at Atlanta) and played 30 minutes tonight, so he will be in the ice tub,'' Del Negro said. "We knew (Richard) was in shape because he was playing a lot in the D-League. He gave us a big boost."

Taking advantage of the Bulls' rotation situation, the Heat led for most of the first quarter thanks in large part to the seven offensive rebounds they gathered. O'Neal had four of those, and the Heat scored nine second-chance points on the way to a 27-23 lead after one quarter. The Heat had one possession in which they got four chances at a score.

Knowing they were only going to succeed with superior defense, the Bulls scored the first six points of the second quarter and 10 of the first 12 thanks to three open-court steals, one each by Miller, Kirk Hinrich and John Salmons.

The Bulls led 39-34 when Deng was on the run to a lay-up, but Miami's Udonis Haslem made a great effort play, coming from behind to block the shot away. Carlos Arroyo rewarded that effort with a 17-foot jumper, keeping the Heat close at the six-minute mark of the second quarter.

Deng then decided to take matters into his own hands, making a short hook, blocking Haslem on his own lay-up attempt and scoring on a lay-up at the other end to push the Bulls' lead to 45-38. The half ended with the Bulls up by seven, 49-42.

There were five lead changes in the third quarter, which ended with the teams tied at 69. With Wade on the bench for the first 4 1/2 minutes of the final quarter, the Bulls opened a 79-75 lead that grew to six on a long jumper by Salmons with 6:42 remaining.

With Hinrich spotting Wade effectively, the Heat got most of their fourth-quarter offense from O'Neal, who had nine points and five boards in the final quarter. But the Bulls made enough plays down the stretch, and got to the line 13 times for 10 points, to keep the Heat at bay.

"We are having too many lows,'' Wade said."Everybody, when they are in there, has to carry their own weight. We haven't' been blown out, but we are just not finding a way to pull them out."

"We kept fighting,'' Rose said about the Bulls."Defensively, it was just really stopping Dwyane and making sure we had bodies around him all the time. Kirk did a great job on him."
