Lakers-Trail Blazers Preview

Nothing has come easy for the Western Conference-leading Los Angeles Lakers at the Rose Garden.

Brandon Roy has had a lot to do with this, and the Portland Trail Blazers are hopeful the three-time All-Star will be back on the court Saturday night as they go for their 10th straight home victory over the Lakers.

Roy averages a team-best 23.1 points for the Trail Blazers (30-22), but has missed nine straight and 11 of the last 12 games with a strained right hamstring. He was originally hurt during the Blazers' 120-108 home win over Milwaukee on Jan. 13 and re-aggravated the injury in Philadelphia one week later.

Just five days before getting hurt, Roy led Portland to a 107-98 home win over the Lakers. He scored 32 points on 9 of 11 shooting as the Blazers extended the NBA's longest home winning streak against the Lakers.

"I just mark Ls on the season right away when we come up," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said following that loss on Jan. 8.

Roy's play is a big reason the Lakers haven't won in Portland since an 86-83 victory on Feb. 23, 2005. The 6-foot-6 guard is averaging 25.2 points and 8.6 assists in five career home games against Los Angeles with the Blazers winning all of them by an average of 10.2 points.

Roy practiced for the first time in two weeks Friday, and coach Nate McMillan is hopeful he'll return for this game.

"He's been sitting out for a couple weeks now and you don't want again to waste the time that you've already allowed him to recover," McMillan told the Trail Blazers' official Web site. "He has to, in his mind, feel confident that he can go out there and play and explode the way he plays out on the court."

Portland has lost six of the 11 games Roy has missed since Jan. 15, but the team is showing some improvement, having won three of four including victories over Dallas and San Antonio.

In Thursday's 96-93 win over the Spurs, the Blazers rallied from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit. Martell Webster provided a big offensive lift throughout, hitting all five of his 3-pointers - two in the final 3:38 - and finishing with 21 points.

Roy not only wants to play, but also wants to make significant contributions.

"I want to go out there and feel like I can help the team," he said. "I don't want to go out there and feel like the guys have to carry me. They're playing well right now and I don't want to come in and make them play at my level."

Kobe Bryant didn't hurt his team by rushing back from a sprained left ankle Friday, but the Lakers still lost to Denver 126-113, their second defeat in three games.

Bryant aggravated his already-sore foot in the first half of Wednesday's 99-97 win over Charlotte and finished with a season-low five points on 2 of 12 shooting. Bryant's status against the Nuggets was in question, but the 12-time All-Star started and had 33 points on 11 of 22 shooting with nine rebounds.

"I could still be effective and play,'' a terse Bryant said. "Obviously, I'm not as explosive as I was but I can still command double teams, things like that.''

Bryant has played well in Oregon, but that hasn't translated into many wins.

Bryant had 32 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in Portland last month, and has scored at least 30 in 12 of his last 13 games there. Still, the Lakers (34-16) have just two wins in that span and are 4-21 at the Rose Garden since Bryant's rookie season in 1996-97.

Odom leads Lakers to first Rose Garden win since 2005

PORTLAND, Ore (NBA.com exclusive) -- Even without Kobe Bryant, even without Andrew Bynum in the second half, the Los Angeles Lakers had a significant edge inside on the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night.

The Lakers used it to full advantage in rolling to a 99-82 victory at the Rose Garden.

With Lamar Odom leading the way, the Lakers outrebounded Portland 47-30 and won the battles in points in the paint (48-22) and second-chance points (15-0) to earn their first victory in Portland since February 2005.

The Blazers had owned the Lakers at the Rose Garden in recent years, winning nine in a row, 15 of the last 17 meetings and 22 of 26.

Not Saturday night. Bryant, a late scratch due to an ankle injury, stayed in the visitors' locker room. Bynum, who injured a hip early and didn't play after halftime, wasn't a factor.

But Odom was. The 6-10 small forward matched his career high with 22 rebounds - 14 in the second half - and finished with 10 points and six assists in his 37 minutes.

Ron Artest sank 9 of 12 shots - including a 30-foot dagger at the end of the first half - and scored a game-high 21 points for the Lakers (39-13). With centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla lost for the year following knee surgery, the Blazers were outsized at nearly every position.

"They had matchups, and they came in with a plan to slow the tempo and pound the ball inside," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "With Odom, (Pau) Gasol and Artest, they did that.

"Their defense was good. We couldn't get to the paint, and our shots didn't fall. They limited us to one shot, and they totally controlled the boards. They're world champs for a reason."

Portland (30-23) had only two offensive rebounds. The Blazers shot .500 in the first half and only .371 in the second half. The Lakers scored six fast-break points, the Blazers five. "They executed in the halfcourt, sharing the ball," McMillan said. "If we don't get fast-break points or second opportunities, it's going to be hard to beat this team."

Especially without Brandon Roy, who missed his 12th game in the last 13 outings with a strained right hamstring. Before the game, it was announced Roy will also sit out the final two games before the All-Star break and skip the All-Star Game, too, in order to rest and rehab the hamstring.

"We're used to losing guys, to facing adversity," said Portland forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who scored 12 of his 16 points in the first quarter. "We just have to step up. We had a lot of good looks; we just didn't knock them down, including myself."

Six Lakers scored in double figures, including Shannon Brown, who came off the bench for 19 points, 14 in the first half. The biggest contributor by far, though, was Odom.

"He is unbelievable on the boards," Artest said. "As soft as we are right now, we still have pretty good rebounders - Lamar, Pau and (Bynum). We're getting tougher. That's the scary thing - we're getting tougher."

McMillan suggested Bryant's absence - breaking a streak of 235 straight games dating back to March 2007 - might have been a psychological ploy on the part of Laker coach Phil Jackson, disgruntled with his players' effort in a 126-113 loss against Denver on Friday night.

"I felt that could have been done on purpose," McMillan said. "Phil challenged them last night and thought they had a letdown without Carmelo (Anthony) playing.

"Sometimes coaches do things like that, where you challenge your team and see if you can play without a star. We've been in that situation all year long, playing without guys, and guys have stepped up and played."

Jackson said it was a decision made by Bryant, who had scored 33 points in the Denver loss, a little more than an hour before Saturday's game.

"He said, 'I'm thinking about not playing,' and I said, 'It's OK if you don't,' " Jackson said. "About 10 minutes later, he said, 'Yeah, I think I should take it off,' so we went from there." The Lakers were able to win comfortably, even without Bryant and with Bynum playing fewer than 10 first-half minutes. They led 54-48 at the half, thanks to Artest's last-second bomb, were in front 73-64 after three quarters and gradually pulled away in the final period.

"We reacted well," said Gasol, held to 13 points and eight rebounds. "We just played hard and played together, and the result was good. We won in a place where we haven't been able to be successful at all."

The Blazers, meanwhile, looked at is as an opportunity lost, while giving full credit to the Lakers.

"They played a solid game," Portland point guard Andre Miller said. "That's a professional, veteran team over there, well-coached. They controlled the defensive glass. we couldn't get any offensive boards. Any time you're limited to one and done, it's tough to win."
