ORLANDO (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was an All-Star kind of day for the Boston Celtics, until the end.
Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo, named as reserves to the Eastern Conference All-Star team earlier Thursday night, hit big shots down the stretch of a game the Celtics led almost all the way against the Orlando Magic.
But their clutch shots were nullified in the final minute by J.J.
Redick's long 3-point basket and a driving layup by Rashard Lewis with
1.6 seconds left.
The Magic (30-16) came from 14 points behind in the fourth quarter to win, 96-94, handing the Celtics (29-14) their ninth loss in 15 games.
"We deserved it," said Boston coach Doc Rivers. "I said in the second quarter we had a chance to be up 20. I thought we completely lost our focus. An 11-point lead, I told them at halftime, was a joke. We should have been up 25 points at halftime."
They were up by 16 after the Magic shot only 33 percent in the first half and then missed their first four shots of the second half.
Lewis, on his way to a game-high 23 points, scored seven straight points in the third quarter to get the Magic back in it, and twin towers Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat were the keys to a 23-8 run that vaulted the Magic into the lead in the fourth quarter.
The game, nationally televised by TNT, was tied 94-94 when Lewis rebounded a Ray Allen miss with 14.8 seconds left.
After a timeout, the Magic tried to get the ball to Vince Carter (2-for-13, six points), but the play broke down. Lewis drove around Garnett and kept going all the way to the basket.
"They're a great defensive team, but I turned the corner and I saw the rim and no guys collapsing in, and I was most definitely shocked,"
Lewis said. "I was getting ready to make an outlet pass, but then I had a layup."
The 6-foot-11 Gortat defended Kevin Garnett, the Celtics' starting All-Star, throughout most of the fourth quarter and finished with six points, eight rebounds and three blocks, earning high praise.
"He's one of the best Polish centers ever to play," cracked Howard, who scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 rebounds and four blocks.
"First of all, it was a dream for me to play against KG," Gortat said.
"He's a great player and there was a little stretch of 15 seconds where he couldn't catch the ball (Gortat knocked it away from him twice). It was kind of weird. But playing in that kind of game, with all the energy, I was ready to jump out of the gym."
According to Stan Van Gundy, Gortat earned some more chances.
"I've been thinking about it more," said the Magic coach. "If I just went down the list and forgot about position and ranked our players, I think Marcin is fairly high up that list. He's never going to get a lot of minutes behind Dwight, so to give him minutes at the 4, especially against teams that are bigger, I think that's an option we should look at."
Gortat's only field-goal attempt, a 15-foot bank shot, put the Magic up for the first time in the fourth quarter.
The Magic made only six field goals in the first period, four of them by Jameer Nelson in a span of 73 seconds. Boston took a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led, 40-29, when Howard sat down with three fouls for the final 8:34 of the first half.
Allen led the Celtics with 20 points. Rasheed Wallace came off the bench for 17, but missed badly on a 3-pointer at the final horn.
The Celtics were outrebounded, 47-32.
"It was a game that we needed and we had under control for most of the game," said Pierce. "We were right where we wanted to be on the road, up three with less than a minute. There's nothing else you can ask for.
We just didn't execute defensively and offensively in the last minute, and it cost us."
The Magic tied franchise records for fewest assists in a half (one in the first half) and in a quarter (none in the second). They finished the game with eight, one over the franchise-low set in their loss to the Celtics on Christmas Day.
