MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Al Jefferson scored 25 points including a couple of big buckets down the stretch to help Minnesota hold on and defeat the Indiana Pacers 116-109.
Trailing by one at the half, Minnesota took control of the game with a 17-0 run in the third quarter. The Wolves' aggressiveness throughout the game led to a substantial rebounding margin over the Pacers. The Wolves also got to the line a season-high 45 times.
"The foul shots and rebounds were the things that obviously killed us," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "Minus-28 on free throw attempts and minus-20 on the glass, that negated an unselfish game by us where we had 30 assists. . . . Any time you have that kind of disparity in rebounding and free throws, it has a lot to do with aggressiveness."
Indiana trailed by 10 early in the fourth quarter, but hit a flurry of 3-pointers to pull within one, 100-99, with 6:34 to play.
Minnesota, however, responded with a 12-4 run, including the baskets by Jefferson.
"That felt good," Jefferson said. "We don't have one guy that we can give it to and he will take over. We've got the run our offense and run it well."
While Indiana got back within three, a bid to tie the game by Danny Granger felt short with 21 seconds to play. Kevin Love grabbed the rebound, his 13th of the game, made a quick outlet pass to Ryan Gomes who hit Damien Wilkins for a breakaway dunk, which sealed the victory for Minnesota.
Kevin Love is averaging 17.3 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game in the last 11 games. His 12.3 rpg average would be enough for second in the league if he had enough games to qualify.
Minnesota shot a higher percentage than Indiana from long range, but Indiana shot lights out from there as well, and it took a lot more of them. Minnesota made 5-for-11 from beyond the arc, but Indiana made 16-for-32. Indiana's 16 3-point field goals bested their previous season-high by four.
Troy Murphy scored the first eight points of the game for Indiana and tallied 19 in the first half on 7-for-8 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Indiana won the first game against the Wolves this season 122-110 on January 2 in Indiana. That victory snapped a season-worst eight game losing streak. Friday night, Indiana was looking to snap a seven game skid on the road and took consolation from the fact that Golden State snapped an eight-game road losing streak against Minnesota on Wednesday night.
"It feels great to get a win like that," Jonny Flynn said. "And then on top of it, we get a win against a team that for the most part embarrassed us [in our last game]."
Minnesota is 5-1 in their last six games against Indiana at the Target Center.
