Raptors-Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics were relatively healthy during their longest losing streak last season. They've had a much easier time pinpointing the cause behind their current skid.

With Kevin Garnett's status uncertain and Paul Pierce expected to miss another game, the Celtics look to avoid losing four in a row for the first time in nearly a year as they host the surging Toronto Raptors on Saturday night.

Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen were all healthy when Boston dropped four straight last Jan. 4-9, a skid it snapped with a 115-109 victory over Toronto on Jan. 11.

Now Allen is the only one of the three who is not nursing an injury, as the Celtics (23-8) try to win for the first time since an 86-77 victory at Orlando on Dec. 25.

Coach Doc Rivers told the Celtics' official Web site that Pierce will miss his fifth straight game with a right knee injury. Garnett's status is uncertain after he sat out a 116-98 loss at Phoenix on Wednesday night due to a hyperextended right knee.

Boston had been defeated by no more than 11 points in any of its previous seven losses.

"When you take your best two scorers off the floor ... and your best defender off the floor, you may not win that game," Rivers said.

Garnett was hurt in a 92-90 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night, then the injury was aggravated after he got kicked in a 103-99 defeat to Golden State the following evening. Rivers said he didn't like the way Garnett "looked at all" against the Warriors.

Garnett is averaging 15.0 points and 7.6 rebounds, while Pierce leads Boston with 18.2 points per game.

After what turned out to be an awful four-game road trip, the Celtics hope playing at the TD Garden will help them get back on track. Boston has won five of six at home, including a 116-103 victory over Toronto (16-17) on Nov. 27 in the teams' first meeting.

The Celtics have won five straight and nine of 10 against the Raptors.

Toronto, though, has won a season-high five in a row and had a franchise-record nine victories in December, beating Charlotte 107-103 on Wednesday night.

Chris Bosh had 33 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Raptors. His 9,381 points are 39 shy of tying Vince Carter's franchise record.

Bosh would likely have an easier time maneuvering in the paint if Garnett sits out. The Raptors, though, might be without one of their own top big men, with Hedo Turkoglu nursing a bruised right knee.

Turkoglu, listed as day to day, was hurt in the first half against the Bobcats and did not return after the break. He's averaging 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 40.3 percent from 3-point range.

Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani give Toronto two strong shooting big men. Bargnani helped make up for Turkoglu's absence by matching a season high with 28 points.

It was the second time in three games that Bargnani has scored more than 20. He was held to seven points on 2-of-6 shooting in this season's first matchup with the Celtics.

Shorthanded Celtics still too much for Raptors

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Despite missing three starters and another rotation player, the Boston Celtics didn't miss a beat in putting the kibosh on the Toronto Raptors' five-game winning streak, 103-96.

Taking advantage of Toronto's Swiss-cheese defense, the Celtics -- sans Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Marquis Daniels -- shot 51 percent and took a ten-point lead by halftime. For all intents and purposes, the rest of the night was a game of keep-away.

It was hardly a statement win, but winning without their leaders was yet another example of why the Celtics are the Celtics and most everyone else is most everyone else.

"Without their main players, [the Celtics] still go out and there and play tough, play hard and play like they want to be a championship team," DeMar DeRozan said.

"They're a good team...especially on their home court," Chris Bosh said. "No matter who's playing, they execute their offense well."

From an execution standpoint, the first quarter went from being a best-case scenario for the Celtics, who led 29-20 at one point, to living up to the drastically lowered expectations of the evening after Toronto closed the period on a 7-0 run. But Boston suffered no ill effects from the momentum swing, outscoring the Raptors by eight in the second quarter to go up 58-48.

With so many of their playmakers out, the Celtics did well to avoid allowing the remaining rotation players to dominate the ball, choosing instead to trust the system. Other than some stagnant possessions when Ray Allen sat on the bench, Boston held to the team philosophy, swinging the ball for 13 assists on 19 first-half field goals.

"When we dribbled a lot, something bad happened," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "When the ball moved a lot, something good happened."

Putting the cherry on top of the offensive cake was the fact that six Celtics scored in double digits and nine out of ten players -- the outlier being Glen Davis -- had at least one assist.

The Raptors shot 52.8 percent in the first half, making just as many field goals as Boston, but shot themselves in the foot by putting the Celtics at the line 20 times, fouling such legendary shooters as Kendrick Perkins 17 feet away from the basket.

"We have to learn to play like they did where you play that hard of defense and not have fouls called against you," Toronto coach Jay Triano said.

And once they had dug themselves a hole, Toronto never again seemed to be a legitimate threat. Yes, they shrunk the lead to five with just over a minute to play, but as evidenced by their 12 second-half points in the paint, their method was to shoot themselves to a win. No matter how depleted the Boston defense was, using that strategy against it tends to be a futile effort.

"Against this team, if you don't go inside and out you're probably going to shoot low percentage shots from the outside," Bosh said. "You're not going to make them all."

Often the player most people want to see in rather than out, Rasheed Wallace had one of his most productive games in Boston, scoring 16 efficient points on 11 shots and balancing his line with six boards and four assists. He also capped off the evening with 3:11 to play, spinning baseline out of the post for a two-handed dunk that hearkened back to his early Portland Trail Blazer years.

"When Rasheed wants to, he can be one of the best ball players in the league," Kendrick Perkins said. "When he comes to play and he's focused, man, he's great."

The Celtics got another vintage performance out of Tony Allen, who has been Pierce's stand-in over the last week. Allen has had better scoring and rebounding nights, but thrust into the starting guard role, he responded with a season-high seven assists in a team-high 35 minutes.

"I looked at it like I got put in a position to show coach some things I can do," Allen said. "I think I answered that challenge today. Hopefully I can carry this over to the next game."
