Timberwolves-Pacers Preview

Mired in their worst losing streak in nearly three years, some of the Indiana Pacers seem to be losing faith.

The stumbling Pacers hope to regain some confidence and avoid losing a ninth consecutive game Saturday night when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first meeting of the season between the struggling teams.

Indiana (9-22) looked strong early this season, winning five of its first eight games, but things have completely fallen apart. The Pacers are 4-19 since Nov. 18, and have lost eight straight since a 101-98 win over Charlotte on Dec. 16.

Indiana is missing 2009 All-Star Danny Granger (torn right plantar fascia), Troy Murphy (sprained left ankle) and Tyler Hansbrough (inner-ear infection). Granger and Murphy will likely still be out for at least another week, but Hansbrough could return for this game.

Even the returns of those players may be no panacea for a team with problems that run much deeper than its injured list.

"We have to assess ourselves and be honest,'' Pacers forward Dahntay Jones said following Wednesday's 121-110 loss at home to Memphis. "Certain people are not fighting as hard as others. We have to find a way to bring it every night. Chemistry is a problem right now, but we've got to find five guys to play hard together on a consistent basis.''

Luther Head tied a career high with 30 points Wednesday, while Roy Hibbert had a career-best 25 points with 13 rebounds. Their efforts, though, couldn't halt Indiana's longest losing streak since an 11-game skid Feb. 23-March 14, 2007.

Rarely have the scores been close during the current slide, with the Pacers losing by an average of 11.5 points.

"Guys are disappointed,'' coach Jim O'Brien said. "The whole organization is disappointed with where we are right now.''

Minnesota's situation may be even worse.

The Timberwolves (7-27) own the league's second-worst record and have lost three in a row.

Minnesota had a chance to beat Southeast Division-leading Orlando on Friday, leading 77-75 with 10 minutes remaining, but once again failed to get many stops the rest of the way and lost 106-94.

Defensive play has determined the Timberwolves' fate in recent games. Minnesota has lost six of nine, allowing an average of 114.0 points in the six defeats, compared to 94.7 in the wins.

Amid all the disappointment, one bright spot for the Timberwolves has been the play of Kevin Love.

The 6-foot-10 Love finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds Friday for his 11 consecutive double-double. He has 14 double-doubles in 16 games this season after missing the first month with a broken left hand.

The Timberwolves and Pacers split two meetings last season with the road team winning each time.

Pacers hold off Minnesota rally for 122-111 win

INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusve) -- One of their biggest leads of the season came closer than the Indiana Pacers wanted to turning disappointing, maybe even devastating.

Because it didn't, the Pacers weren't complaining.

When your losing streak is the NBA's second-longest, and when your lineup is an injured shell of itself, you don't complain about a victory, and the Pacers didn't after holding off a furious rally by the Minnesota Timberwolves for a 122-111 victory at Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday.

"It's good to get off the schneid," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said.

The Pacers (10-22) led by 29 points three times in the second quarter and once in the third, but while the Timberwolves cut the lead to four with less than a minute remaining, they couldn't cut it all the way, enabling the Pacers to break a season-high eight-game losing streak.

Minnesota (7-28), one of just three NBA teams with a worse record than Indiana entering Saturday's game, lost for a sixth time in eight games.

"If we had started the game the way we finished it, we would have won easily," said Timberwolves center Al Jefferson, who had a game-high 23 points and six rebounds. "None of that matters. We still lost."

Indiana had lost 19 of 23 games after an early-season five-game winning streak.

"We haven't had this feeling in a long time," said Pacers center Roy Hibbert, whose 21 points tied guard Luther Head for team-high, and who also had three blocked shots. "It's real nice to get this win, but we have to build on this feeling. "We came out with good energy, didn't have to dig ourselves out of a deep hole. We were having fun and playing good basketball."

The Timberwolves, after trailing 92-65 with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter, cut the lead to 98-85 entering the fourth quarter, then outscored Indiana 26-17 to cut the lead to four when forward Kevin Love converted a 3-point play to make it 115-111 with 52.9 seconds remaining.

"We just didn't come out to play (in the first half) tonight," Love said. "We were stuck in the mud."

Earl Watson ended the Pacers' next possession with a reverse layup, and after being fouled on the shot by Ryan Gomes, Watson converted the free throw for a seven-point lead with 33 seconds remaining.

"I felt the contact, but he didn't wrap me up, so I was trying to get the 'and one,' " Watson said. "We became stagnant on offense, but we stayed together. We didn't panic. That's part of basketball."

Mike Dunleavy, who entered the game in one of the worst shooting stretches of his career, was one reason for the Pacers' quick start. After shooting 14 of 62 (22.5 percent) from the field in the previous seven games, he shot 5 of 9 in the first half and had 15 points at halftime.

He was scoreless in the Pacers' loss to Memphis on Wednesday, the first time he had been scoreless this season, and he had been in single digits in three of the Pacers' other most recent five games.

Not that Dunleavy was the only reason for the Pacers' early success.

With All-Star swingman Danny Granger still out indefinitely, and with forwards Tyler Hansbrough and Troy Murphy and center Greg Foster out, Indiana remained balanced early, with Hibbert scoring 16 of his points in the first three quarters, Luther Head scoring 15 points in that span and Brandon Rush scoring all 16 of his points off the bench in the first three quarters.

"The tempo and the ball movement got us the lead," O'Brien said. "Seventy-three points is a great tempo. We got a lot of contributions from a lot of people." Indiana shot 55.6 percent in the first half, leading 73-45 at halftime, but the Timberwolves shot 19 of 21 from the free-throw line in the second half and outrebounded Indiana, 29-16, in that span.

Love scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, and Jonny Flynn scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half for Minnesota.

Rookie guard Wayne Ellington scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, and eight of his points came on a jump shot and two 3-point field goals during a fourth-quarter run that cut Indiana's lead from 14 to eight, 111-103, with 3:54 remaining.

"I'm proud of the guys, the way they played in the second half," Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "We have to learn we don't have a 24-minute warm-up period. There is no grace period for us. We need to start at the very beginning so we don't have to claw our way out of it."
