Nuggets-Jazz Preview

The Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz have combined to win the last four Northwest Division titles, and only two games separate them in the current standings.

However, neither team can be happy with how it closed out the 2009 calendar year.

The Nuggets make their first visit of the season to Salt Lake City on Saturday, looking to avoid their first four-game losing streak in more than two years.

Denver (20-12) and Utah (18-14) opened the season against each other Oct. 28, when Carmelo Anthony had a game-high 30 points - equaling his team-leading season average - in the Nuggets' 114-105 home victory.

Led by Anthony, Denver is tied with Portland for the division lead. Utah is two games behind, tied with Oklahoma City.

Both teams struggled at the end of December, especially the Nuggets, who are trying to avoid their first four-game skid since Feb. 14-24, 2007. They lost 106-101 at Sacramento on Monday.

Anthony finished with 34 points, but the Nuggets combined for 38 in the second and third quarters and were unable to recover.

"Losing is extremely frustrating," coach George Karl said. "You don't like to lose, but Sacramento is playing at a good level and we are not playing at a great level. I told the team the best they have going is that we have three days off practice."

The additional time off this week might not be enough for Chauncey Billups, who remains questionable with a strained groin. He has missed five of the last six games, and he sat out the second half of the only game he played in that stretch - a 107-96 loss at Portland on Christmas Day.

Monday's loss was also Denver's sixth straight on the road. The Nuggets have averaged 96.5 points during those games - more than 10 below their season average. They haven't lost seven in a row away from the Pepsi Center since an eight-game skid Dec. 17, 2004-Jan. 17, 2005, but matching that streak is quite possible given their struggles on the road against the Jazz.

Denver has lost four straight in Salt Lake City and seven of eight visits there since the start of the 2005-06 season.

The Jazz have dropped three of five overall, including an 87-86 loss at Oklahoma City on Thursday, when Utah's rally from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit came up short.

Utah was held below 100 points for the fifth time in seven games, and to fewer than 90 for the third time during that stretch. The Jazz were 0 for 9 from 3-point range - the first time they failed to make a shot from beyond the arc since they went 0 for 10 on Nov. 11 against Boston.

"We played good enough defense the whole game to win the basketball game," said Deron Williams, who scored 10 of his 14 points in the final five minutes. "Just offensively, we didn't have everybody going."

Williams has recorded 12 consecutive double-doubles against the Nuggets, including a 28-point, 13-assist effort in the season opener.

Without 'Melo, Billups, Nuggets stop Jazz, end road skid

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- With starters Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups both out of the lineup against Utah on Saturday night, Denver Nuggets coach George Karl kept his strategy simple.

"The basic game plan was to play hard and figure the game out as it happens," Karl said. "No one could write the script on how we were going to win tonight until the game got going."

The Nuggets outplayed the Jazz in several aspects, but sticking to the premise of playing hard without their two stars was the difference in Denver's 105-95 win over the Jazz. The Nuggets (21-12) put together a better effort on both ends of the floor, forced 26 turnovers and dominated Utah (18-15) in the paint in their victory.

Anthony, who is second in the NBA in scoring averaging 30 points per game, missed his first game of the season with a right knee contusion. Billups sat out for the fifth time in six games with a left groin strain.

"We've got a lot of leadership," said Denver guard Arron Afflalo, who provided the Nuggets with a lift with 13 points and three 3-pointers. "To have Chauncey and 'Melo out and still win says a lot about the other guys on this team. Everybody's confidence picks up and when those two get back we'll be even better."

Rookie Ty Lawson took full advantage of his starting opportunity and the Jazz had no answer for him. Lawson displayed his stunning quickness to get to the basket and made smart decisions with the ball. He tied his season-high with 23 points and dished nine assists. He also had three steals.

"Kid has a chance to be a great player and tonight we needed him," Karl said. "I don't know if he was great, but he played a damn good game. He was in control of the game and that doesn't happen very often by anybody on this court. It's a tough place to play."

Everywhere outside of Denver has been tough for the Nuggets to play lately. They had lost six straight road games before beating Utah with a shorthanded team, earning an unexpected result.

"The only way I thought we could beat them was to score in the open court, score off of turnovers and try to create some defensive plays," Karl said.

Nene and Kenyon Martin anchored Denver's defensive effort, pushing the Jazz out of the paint while racking up several deflections. The Nuggets disrupted some of Utah's favorite sets with ball pressure, and the Jazz had to take many outside jumpers with hands in their faces. Utah's 26 turnovers led to 33 Denver points.

"They did some kind of job defensively on us," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "They made it very difficult for us all night long. They got after us, made us take tough shots, and they stayed after it. It was a tough loss, but give them credit. They played extremely well."

Denver had a much easier time getting to the basket than the Jazz did. The Nuggets couldn't buy a basket in the early going, missing seven of their first eight shots. So they adjusted and attacked Utah's defense. Denver set the tone for the game by scoring 18 of its first 22 points in the paint.

Nene had 22 points and six steals. Martin had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Nuggets finished with 64 points in the paint, compared to 48 for Utah. Denver doubled Utah in fast break points, 24-12.

"That's the way we want to play," said Denver guard J.R. Smith, who had 18 points and four assists. "That's when we're at our best. We just gotta keep it up the rest of the year."

Two runs in the third quarter helped the Nuggets pull away. A quick 7-0 spurt that featured a 3-pointer and two free throws by Afflalo and a breakaway dunk by Nene gave the Nuggets their first double-digit lead at 61-51.

The Nuggets went on a 12-2 run that was capped by a sequence that told the story of Denver's superior effort. After Smith missed the second of two free throw attempts, he collected his own rebound, dribbled a couple of steps back and drained a 3-pointer. The shot gave Denver its biggest lead of the game at 75-59.

"It's definitely a disappointment, especially with who they have missing," said Jazz guard Deron Williams. "They shared the ball, they executed, they outhustled us, they outrebounded us. It was just a bad game."

Williams was bothered by a stomach virus and missed Utah's morning shootaround. He was a game-time decision and played at less than 100 percent. He still managed to score 16 points, dish six assists and grab five rebounds.
