The Sacramento Kings pushed the defending champions to the brink of defeat Friday. The possible return of their star rookie could drive the Kings over the top Saturday night at Arco Arena.

With Tyreke Evans expected back in the lineup after missing the last three games due to injury, Sacramento will look to snap a three-game losing streak to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Kings (14-18) led the host Los Angeles Lakers by as many as 20 points in the first half Friday, but fell 109-108 as Kobe Bryant hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. Sacramento forward Ime Udoka missed a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining with the Kings up by two.

"We got everything we needed, performance-wise, from everybody that played, and we couldn't close it out," said coach Paul Westphal.

Sacramento has lost three of four games this season with Evans sidelined. Prior to Friday's loss, Evans said he would be ready to go against the Mavericks after spraining his right ankle in a 112-103 double-overtime loss to the Lakers on Dec. 26.

"It feels pretty good," Evans told the league's official Web site. "I had a workout Wednesday and it felt pretty good. The swelling went down. It's still sore, but not as bad as it was (Sunday). It feels pretty good though. I'll be ready to go."

Evans, averaging 20.3 points per game, 5.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists, scored 29 points with seven boards and a season-high 10 assists in a 104-102 loss to the Mavericks on Nov. 20.

The Kings defeated Dallas 102-95 on Jan. 11 of last season in the teams' last game at Arco Arena.

After missing the last two matchups against Sacramento last season due to a broken left hand, Jason Terry had 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter of the Nov. 20 victory. Terry, the NBA's third-leading scorer off the bench at 16.6 points per game, paced the Southwest Division-leading Mavericks (22-10) with 20 in Thursday's 97-94 loss at Houston.

"Our undoing was a sluggish first quarter," said coach Rick Carlisle, whose team was outscored 24-17 in the opening 12 minutes. "Houston hit us with early transition points and 3s. The rest of the game was about even. With a team like this you have to come out with energy early or you are in trouble."

Dirk Nowitzki, among the league leaders at 25.0 points per game, has scored 11 and 13 in his last two contests. The last time he had 13 or fewer points in three straight was the final two games of 1998-99 and the first one of the following season.

Nowitzki is averaging 23.1 points in 19 career games in Sacramento.

Jason Kidd, who had 15 points and 11 assists in the Nov. 20 victory over the Kings, will look for his fourth consecutive double-double in this matchup. Kidd is averaging 13.7 points and 11.3 assists during this stretch.

Kings center Spencer Hawes had a career-high 30 points with 11 rebounds Friday. In three career starts against Dallas - all losses - Hawes is averaging 10.7 points and 5.7 boards.

Sacramento has dropped three of four at home after winning 10 of its first 13 there this season.

Barea acts as playmaker in Mavs' win over Kings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Jose Barea looks more like the kind of guy you'd find hooping in a local recreational league rather than starting in the NBA.

In reality though, the 25 year old who is generously listed at six-foot tall, is the latest in a growing line of Mavericks playmakers -- as if they didn't have enough.

The undersized guard from Puerto Rico scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as the Mavericks knocked off the Kings 99-91 in Sacramento on Saturday night.

"That's what they need from me, every game at the beginning to get us going," Barea said.

"I know sometimes it takes Dirk a little while to get going, that's why I think coach has me in the starting lineup."

Signed in 2006 as an undrafted rookie, Barea is in his fourth season with the Mavericks, including stints in the developmental league. After starting just 25 games through the first three seasons of his career, Barea has become a starter of late for Dallas and has started 12 times this season.

"You always expect to be a starter at some point," Barea said. "I wasn't expecting it right now but I'm glad they're giving me that chance."

Barea said that the Mavericks coaching staff wants him to play aggressive and look to score, especially playing alongside point guard Jason Kidd.

In his postgame interview, Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle talked about Barea's ability to get it going early against Sacramento and the plays he made down the stretch to involve his teammates.

"Having that additional playmaker really helps," Carlisle said.

With names like Nowitzki, Kidd, Josh Howard, Shawn Marion, Jason Terry and now Barea, Dallas has plenty of scoring options.

"Every night it's someone different, that's the thing about this team," said Marion, who had six points and five rebounds. "We have a lot of different people who can do a lot of different things for this team."

You always know what you can expect from Nowitzki, as the forward had 25 points and seven rebounds on Saturday night. Off to a slow start with just two points after the first quarter, Nowitzki came into his usual rhythm by hitting perimeter jumpers over the outstretched arms of defenders.

And it was the Dallas defense at it again, holding an opponent to under 100 points for the ninth time in 11 games, including its last three games.

"I thought we were aggressive and smart [on defense]," Carlisle said. "You hold these guys to 40 percent that's pretty good and they average 108 points in this building."

Kings point guard Tyreke Evans returned to action after missing Sacramento's last three games with a sore right ankle. His return was uncertain when he appeared in the starting lineup on Saturday night.

The rookie didn't play his usual point guard position, mostly playing at the two-guard spot alongside fellow guard Beno Udrih, who ran the offense for Sacramento.

Evans had five of his six assists in the first half and finished with 14 points on 6-for-18 shooting. Evans didn't play in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter.

Fellow rookie Omri Casspi, who came into the contest with the league's No. 6 best 3-point percentage (45.6 percent), scored a team-high 22 points, including 4-for-6 from the 3-point line.

Third-year center Spencer Hawes scored a career-high 30 points in Friday's loss to the Lakers, and followed up with just nine points on Saturday. Fellow young big man Jason Thompson, who was scoreless against the Lakers, bounced back with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Carlisle praised the calming nature of Kings coach Paul Westphal prior to the game.

"That's his personality; he is never going to panic," Carlisle said. "He is always going to be calm or collective. Whether they are up or down he's going to have the same body language."

Westphal showed that he has some fire too though, earning a technical in the first half when he moved down the sideline across half court to argue a call.

Carlisle called the Kings "a bunch of young fighters" who had gotten a lot better than when his Mavericks first faced the Kings in a 104-102 win at Dallas in November.

As the Mavericks continued to push their leads into double-figures, the Kings continued to fight and respond with mini runs to stay in the game. Down as many as 17 points, the Kings fought back to within six points in the final minute.

Westphal was an assistant coach and an Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations with Dallas from 2007-09.

Carlisle said if it were to be decided now, Westphal would be the NBA's coach of the year for helping turn around a Kings team that had the worst record in the NBA last season.
