Pacers-Bulls Preview

At least for now, Vinny Del Negro remains on the Chicago Bulls bench.

However, his tenure as coach could be nearing the end going into a matchup Tuesday night with the Indiana Pacers, who look to avoid a seventh straight loss.

While Chicago (11-17) ended a tumultuous week on a high note, beating the Hornets 96-85 on Saturday, the victory might have done nothing to provide job security for the embattled Del Negro. According to ESPN.com, the Bulls already have decided to fire Del Negro and are just debating on a replacement.

In Del Negro's first season with Chicago in 2008-09, the Bulls had a mediocre regular season, finishing 41-41. They reached the playoffs, however, and took Boston to a Game 7 before losing the thrilling series.

That led to increased expectations for 2009-10, but Chicago has floundered, and the low point seemed to come last Monday when the team blew a 35-point second-half lead in a loss to Sacramento.

The Bulls are reportedly eager to have an established coach in place for the 2010 offseason when several high-profile free agents will be available.

While Del Negro's future in Chicago is in doubt, his team put on perhaps its best performance of the season Saturday.

Tyrus Thomas, who was sidelined 22 games with a broken left forearm, had 21 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in his return. He played the entire fourth quarter, scoring 12 points in the second half.

"He got a little winded but ... it was tough to take him out because he was so productive," Del Negro said. "You saw what his athleticism does for us."

Though it seems unlikely Thomas' return will help save Del Negro's job, the Bulls have gone 3-2 when he's played this season compared to 8-15 without him.

They may have a chance to put together a winning streak over the next two weeks, playing five of the next eight games at home. Six of their opponents during that stretch have losing records.

The Bulls will try to take advantage of a Pacers team which has lost six in a row and 13 of 16.

Indiana (9-20) fell 114-80 at Miami on Sunday, shooting a season-worst 30.7 percent. Troy Murphy scored 16 points while Tyler Hansbrough had 10 points and 10 rebounds despite not making a field goal.

"I don't know if we have enough speed in our starting line," coach Jim O'Brien told the league's official Web site. "Clearly we're not getting it done. The last couple of games we haven't scored well. ... Right now it's not working."

The Pacers' new backcourt of Dahntay Jones and Earl Watson certainly doesn't appear to be working. Both players were inserted into the starting lineup five games ago, a span in which Jones has averaged 4.4 points on 21.4 percent shooting while Watson has shot 35.5 percent and scored 5.8 per game.

The Pacers are averaging 91.0 points during the losing streak and have allowed at least 100 in five of the six games.

This is the first meeting between Indiana and Chicago this season. The two split four games in 2008-09, with each team winning both of its home contests. The Pacers have lost six of seven in Chicago.

Salmons, Miller provide Bulls' spark vs. Pacers

CHICAGO (NBA.com exclusive) -- Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro and Indiana coach Jim O'Brien both faced questions about their job status over the last few days.

After receiving a pregame verbal nod of sorts from his general manager, Del Negro got a vote of confidence from his players, who reached a season high in points, beating the visiting Pacers 104-95 at the United Center on Tuesday.

Derrick Rose scored 28 points, and the Bulls got 33 points from former starters John Salmons (17 points) and Brad Miller (16), who were replaced by Kirk Hinrich and Taj Gibson in the starting lineup two games ago.

Roy Hibbert scored 17 points off the bench for the Pacers, who dropped their season-high seventh straight game to fall to 9-21.

Before the game, Bulls general manager Gar Forman said "Vinny is our coach'' while trying to downplay recent rumors that the Bulls have already decided to fire Del Negro once a suitable replacement is found.

Then the Bulls went out and put on a first-quarter display against the Pacers, taking a 19-point lead on the strength of 67 percent shooting and a strong defensive effort.

The Pacers eventually got back into the game and took their first lead, 69-68, in the third quarter, behind hot shooting by Mike Dunleavy and Solomon Jones. But the Bulls went on a 13-3 run to redirect the momentum, then Rose put in 11 points in the fourth quarter to give the 12-17 Bulls their second consecutive win.

"It's good to put some games together,'' Salmons said.

The Bulls are different now with the addition of Tyrus Thomas to the active lineup. Although he did not match his 21-point effort he had Saturday in his first game back from a broken arm, he did provide a game-high 15 rebounds and three blocked shots.

"He brings so much athleticism, one play from him can turn a whole game around,'' Salmons said.

The Pacers opened the game shooting 27 percent trailed 34-15 after the first quarter.

"We dig a hole, and that killed us,'' O'Brien said. "Guys came off the bench and played well, then our starters played well at the start of the third quarter. We go down by 19 in the first quarter and beat them by 10 the rest of the game."

The Bulls attacked the Pacers in the first quarter, as they shot 67 percent (14-for-21) from the field, with Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich reaching double-digits with 10 points each.

The Pacers, meanwhile, played like a team fully aware of their own struggles. They shot 7-for-26 in the first quarter, missed all seven 3-pointers they attempted, and got only one of the 19 rebounds that they could have hauled in at the offensive end.

In the second quarter, however, the Pacers were the hot team, going 15-for-23 from the field (five of six from 3-point range), and they climbed back into the game. Hibbert and Luther Head had 13 and nine points, respectively, in the quarter, and when Troy Murphy hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the half, the Pacers trailed 55-53.

"We showed we can fight and we are resilient,'' Hibbert said. "We have the capacity to come back in games."

The Bulls, of course, are best known for giving up a 35-point second half lead to Sacramento a week ago, so no lead is safe in their hands.

"We tend, once we get leads, to relax a little bit, and we can't do that,'' Hinrich said.

"I think we got a little stagnant offensively and they started making shots,'' Del Negro said.

The Pacers had a chance to accomplish something in the third quarter, when Bulls starters Gibson, Noah and Hinrich were in foul trouble. But Salmons helped the Bulls offensively, and the Pacers missed their last 12 shots of the quarter to fall behind 87-74.

Thomas, Salmons and Miller combined for 41 points off the bench, and Salmons added five assists. Neither Salmons nor Miller were playing well as starters, but they made key contributions as reserves Tuesday.

"We need them to play well,'' Del Negro said. "They know they are important to our success. It is nice to have two veteran guys like that coming off the bench."

Note: One game after having a unique double-double (10 points without a basket plus 10 rebounds) Tyler Hansbrough did not play Tuesday because of an inner ear infection.
