The Denver Nuggets haven't shown much passion or enjoyed much success on the road lately. Returning home to renew their rivalry with the Dallas Mavericks could help them get their game back in gear.

Denver hosts Dallas on Sunday in the first meeting between the teams since last season's contentious Western Conference semifinals.

The Nuggets (20-10), who have dropped three of four overall, had their Northwest Division lead over Portland trimmed to one game Friday as they lost their fifth straight on the road, 107-96 to the Trail Blazers.

After missing three games with a groin injury, Chauncey Billups scored 10 points with five assists in the first half but sat out the second. He will miss this game and Tuesday's visit to Sacramento to give his strained left groin time to heal, with the Nuggets saying they simply hoped to avoid a "lingering problem."

Even with Billups playing 20 minutes Friday, Denver was limited to four fast-break points.

"We're not picking the pace up on the road," coach George Karl told the Nuggets' official Web site. "We're not running and attacking. We're more of a half-court team than a fast-break team."

Denver is averaging 100.6 points on the road - where the club is 7-9 - compared to 115.3 at the Pepsi Center while posting an NBA-best 13-1 home record.

Including three victories in last season's playoff matchup, the Nuggets have won seven straight at home against Dallas (21-9) since an 89-85 loss Dec. 31, 2006.

Carmelo Anthony had a broken bone in his right hand and missed the Mavericks' last regular-season visit to Denver - a 99-97 Nuggets victory Jan. 13.

Anthony, leading the league with 30.4 points per game, averaged 30.0 and 6.8 rebounds as the Nuggets defeated the Mavericks in a five-game playoff series last spring and advanced to their first West finals since 1985.

After Denver won the first two games at home by an average of 13.0 points, Anthony hit the game-winning 3 with one second remaining in a 106-105 Game 3 victory at Dallas. Antoine Wright tried to commit a foul before Anthony's shot, but the referees did not stop play. The league issued a statement soon after the game that an intentional foul should have been called.

Game 3 was marred by a number of incidents in the stands, including Mavericks owner Mark Cuban telling the mother of Denver forward Kenyon Martin that her son was a thug. Martin was fired $25,000 by the NBA and assessed a flagrant foul 1 for knocking down Dirk Nowitzki in the first quarter of Game 1.

Cuban will be at his vacation home in the Cayman Islands on Sunday and will also likely miss the Mavericks' other visit to Denver on Feb. 9.

Josh Howard and Jason Terry, who both picked up flagrant fouls in the Game 4 victory against Denver, combined to score 20 of Dallas' 27 fourth-quarter points in Saturday's 106-101 win over Memphis.

Nowitzki scored all 20 of his points in the first three quarters as the Southwest Division-leading Mavericks salvaged a 2-2 homestand.

"Josh was aggressive, making plays there in the fourth and Jet was on fire there late, so it was fun to watch," said Nowitzki, who didn't shoot a free throw for the first time since Dec. 8, 2007.

Nowitzki had 44 points and 14 boards in the Jan. 13 loss in Denver.

Dallas, winner of eight of 10 on the road, will try to snap the Nuggets' six-game home winning streak.

Three of Denver's four regular-season wins over the Mavericks in 2008-09 came by three points or fewer.

Mavs grab win over Nuggets in 104-96 win

DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- This one was more than a win for the Mavericks, it was a psychological hurdle.

Dallas hadn't beaten the Nuggets in Denver since Dec. 31, 2006, a stretch of seven games, but that ended with a 104-96 win Sunday night at Pepsi Center.

"We had to win this game and we got it done. Just for the psyche of this team," Jason Terry said. "Does this team have your number? You think of those things. I'm glad we got the monkey off our backs, so to speak."

The Mavericks did it in an unconventional way. With Dirk Nowitzki scoring just 13 points, Dallas had seven guys score in double figures, led by Drew Gooden's 19 points off the bench.

Gooden, who wasn't around for the four straight regular season and three playoff losses the Mavericks suffered in Denver, was 8-for-8 from the field and pitched in with 10 rebounds.

"This was by far his best game as a Maverick," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.

Gooden missed Saturday's win over Memphis with back spasms, but he showed no ill effects Sunday night. He had seven points in the fourth quarter when Dallas held off the Nuggets' late rally that cut the lead to four with 1:46 left. Gooden hit two free throws and tipped in a rebound with 1:19 left to seal the win.

"It was big, especially since not playing yesterday and coming in here playing with an injury," Gooden said. "I didn't know what to expect, but I feel good."

While the Mavericks were getting a player back in the lineup, Denver was missing one of its key figures, Chauncey Billups, who sat out the game to rest his strained left groin. Billups suffered the injury on Dec. 16 and missed three games before returning for the first half against Portland on Friday.

Although the Nuggets said he didn't aggravate the injury in the loss to the Trail Blazers, they decided to sit him Sunday against Dallas and Monday against Sacramento in order to give him a full week off to get healthy.

The Nuggets could have used him against Dallas. Without Billups' playmaking and scoring ability in the lineup the Mavericks could focus their defensive energy on Carmelo Anthony. They harassed Anthony into 5-for-19 shooting night, although the league's leading scorer had a season-high 12 rebounds.

"Early in the game I was trying to pass it to Afflalo, pass it to Ty and knock down shots," said Anthony, who finished with 16 points. "We made some tonight but we missed some."

Denver coach George Karl knows having Billups in the lineup would have made a difference.

"Dallas did a great job with their game scheme with doubling Melo and J.R. (Smith)," he said. "I don't think with Chauncey in there they would have been able to do that."

One reason for Anthony's struggles offensively was foul trouble. He had four by the end of the third quarter and picked up his fifth with 10:02 remaining. He sat down with his team trailing 85-77 and Dallas scored the next six points to take a commanding lead.

Anthony scored four more points when he came back in at the 7:22 mark to help Denver pull to within five, but he picked up his sixth foul with 2:47 left and Denver couldn't

"Two of our best scorers weren't in the game and they shrunk the court," Smith said. "We didn't have enough firepower."

The Mavericks weren't feeling sorry for Denver, they were just happy to get a win on the Nuggets' home court.

"We haven't won here in a long time. It's been like three years, so definitely a big win," said Nowitzki, who had 11 rebounds. "We held a great offensive team to 38 percent -- that's pretty solid. Obviously they were missing Chauncey, the head of the snake, but still a good win."

It could be a big win come April when the playoff seedings are finalized. Last year the Nuggets had home-court advantage and beat the Mavericks in five games, including three double-digit wins in Denver. Although it's only December, Sunday's win could be a factor in the competitive Western Conference.

"This was a game we put on the schedule that we thought we had a chance to win it," Terry said.
