Timberwolves-Nets Preview

It took five weeks for the Nets to win a game this season, and more than a month for the Minnesota Timberwolves' next victory after topping New Jersey on opening night.

Not much has changed for the NBA's two worst teams.

The Nets have lost their past seven games by double digits, and Wednesday night seems to be as likely a time as any to end their skid as the Timberwolves come to town.

Minnesota (5-24) trailed New Jersey 87-71 with 6:51 left on Oct. 28, but Johnny Flynn scored 11 of his 18 points down the stretch to lead a 24-6 closing run en route to a 95-93 victory in his NBA debut.

That was the only time Flynn experienced a win until Nov. 29, but the Nets' drought was even more severe. New Jersey followed its opening-night collapse by losing its next 17 games, breaking the league record for futility to begin a season.

The Nets (2-26) won two of three from Dec. 4-8, but over the last two weeks they've played worse than they did in their 0-18 start. New Jersey lost by an average of 11.3 points during that stretch but has given up 110.0 points per game and scored 92.4 during its current seven-game slide.

The Nets led the Los Angeles Lakers 48-46 at halftime Saturday, but were outscored by 21 in the second half on their way to a 103-84 loss.

"It's a little taste of how we need to play," Devin Harris said of New Jersey's first half, when he scored 17 of his 21 points. "If we can have this type of effort against some of the other teams, I think we can be a little bit more successful. We would have a shot each and every other night.''

The Timberwolves lost 15 straight by an average of 14.8 points after beating the Nets, but lately they've shown more positive signs than New Jersey. Minnesota has won at Denver, beaten Utah twice and throttled Sacramento 112-96 on Friday behind 20 points and 16 rebounds from Kevin Love.

Defense has let the Timberwolves down in their two latest losses, however. Minnesota allowed Boston to shoot 51.9 percent Sunday in a 122-104 loss, then watched a young and talented Atlanta team make 48.9 percent from the field Tuesday in a 112-87 defeat.

"They're kind of the example of a team that got its players young,'' Love said of the Hawks. "That's something I hope I can be a part of one day.''

Love has been one of the Timberwolves' few bright spots lately, and with 15 points and 19 rebounds against the Hawks he posted his sixth straight double-double.

Love, who didn't make his season debut until Dec. 4 as he recovered from a fractured left hand, averaged 11.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in two meetings with New Jersey last season.

Brook Lopez (27 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks) dominated Al Jefferson (nine points, four boards) in the latter's first game since his season-ending ACL tear in February, but the Nets also got a big effort from Yi Jianlian.

Yi had 17 points and 12 rebounds on Oct. 28 versus Minnesota, but he hasn't played since Nov. 2 due to an MCL sprain. He's back practicing, however, and could return Wednesday.

The former No. 6 overall pick is averaging a career-high 16.3 points against Minnesota.

Chris Douglas-Roberts (16.4 points per game), however, will sit with a sprained right ankle.

Timberwolves grab win over Nets 103-99

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Nets give themselves more of a chance with center Yi Jianlian in the lineup. But they still don't have any more room for error.

Case in point: the Timberwolves' 103-99 win over New Jersey on Wednesday night at Izod Center.

Yi may have had 22 points in his first full game since missing five weeks with a sprained right MCL and two weeks with a mouth laceration. And his presence indeed aided Devin Harris (23 points, eight assists) and Courtney Lee (20 points).

But in the end, the Nets allowed Minnesota to connect 8 of its first 11 shots in the fourth quarter and couldn't get a step down the stretch when they needed to.

Al Jefferson (26 points) and Jonny Flynn (22 points) led the Wolves (6-24) with 27 points in the battle of the NBA's two worst teams. The Nets have now lost eight straight overall, falling to 2-27. And they admitted afterwards - this one really hurt.

"Look, there's no other way to say it - this is a very tough loss for all of us," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "I thought the guys worked hard, they were positive, they showed lots of improvement. But at the end we couldn't get the stops we needed and we couldn't convert."

"But it wasn't for lack of trying."

The Wolves looked like they might run away with it in the fourth quarter, starting the period with a quick 6-0 run to take an 84-72 lead. Ultimately, Minnesota made eight of its first 11 shots in the fourth to open up a 92-82 lead.

"We lacked focus in that fourth quarter," Harris acknowledged. "We didn't come out with the necessary intensity that we needed, and they took advantage."

But then the Wolves went cold with a 0-of-8 stretch, New Jersey compiled an 8-0 run - capped off by a Yi 3-pointer - to cut it to 92-90 with 3:17 left.

Minnesota worked it to a 97-93 buffer after a pair of short baskets from Jefferson and a Flynn free throw (off a hard foul in the lane by Harris). But Lee made it a one-point game with a 3-pointer from the wing with 1:05 left, just as the shot clock expired.

A Corey Brewer layup with 39.4 seconds left gave the Wolves a 99-96 lead. Nets center Brook Lopez, who struggled with nine points, cut it to 99-97 by making one of two free throws 11 seconds later.

The Nets appeared to have the stripped the ball from Brewer on the Wolves' inbound on their next possession. But the ruling was overturned after review as the ball went out after hitting Lee's leg. The Nets instead had to send Brewer to the line with 24 seconds left and the second-year guard connected on both from the stripe to make it 101-97.

Said Lee: "The call went our way for a second so we were going to go with it, but then once they reviewed it, I looked to Dev and said, 'This is going to be their ball."

Dismal records aside and lottery projections aside, the Nets should have been motivated against the Wolves following their season-opening 95-93 loss in Minnesota on Oct. 28. New Jersey led by 19 in the third quarter and was up 16 midway through the fourth quarter before blowing it all. Damien Wilkins' buzzer-beater was the winning basket and seemed to set the tone for the Nets' season, as they went on to lose a record 18 straight games to start the season.

Minnesota went over a month without win after taking the Nets in Game 1. Entering Wednesday night's game against the Nets, the Wolves had lost three of their last four - all of the blowout variety.

"We did a lot of things right tonight," added Wolves coach Kurt Rambis. "I think overall our defense was good. Jonny was inspirational tonight with the way he played for most of the ball game."

While the Nets continue to struggle as a team, they made some huge strides as an organization on Wednesday with current owner Bruce Ratner executed all documents necessary to commence construction of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The official closing of the projects comes after six years of legal and financial hurdles.

Vandeweghe, who is still the Nets' general manager, said the certainty of the Brooklyn progress will make it more appealing to potential free agents in the off-season. The Nets are expected to have the most salary-cap room out of any team in the NBA for a bumper crop of star free agents available this summer.

"I think it's important because it creates a great buzz around the team," Vandeweghe said. "Look, it's no secret we're at a dark tunnel, as far as basketball goes. But the Nets have a very, very bright future. We have tons of cap, salary space. We have extra draft picks. We'll probably have a high lottery pick. This is a great free-agent year.

"Now we have what's going to be the most exciting project certainly in basketball, maybe in sports, coming up in a very hot market."
