Kobe Bryant feels the NBA-leading Los Angeles Lakers can improve, while Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma CIty Thunder are trying to climb back above .500.

Bryant looks to help the red-hot Lakers continue their dominance of Durant and the struggling Thunder on Tuesday night.

The Lakers (22-4) have picked up where they left off, holding the best record in the NBA after winning a 15th league title last season.

They've won 15 of 16 after winning 93-81 at Detroit on Sunday, concluding a five-game road trip with four consecutive victories.

"It's a great sign," said Bryant, who scored 28 points, of the trip. "We believe we can be better and we will be better because we push each other."

Bryant, whose 28.8 points per game rank second behind Denver's Carmelo Anthony (30.5), has been superb during the last four games, averaging 34.5 points on 51.0 percent shooting. That surge has come after he endured his worst shooting performance of the season, making 7 of 24 shots - 1 for 9 from beyond the arc - in a 102-94 loss at Utah on Dec. 12.

Bryant, last season's NBA Finals MVP, has also thrived against Oklahoma City (13-13), averaging 33.5 points on 51.6 percent shooting to help the Lakers win the last 11 meetings since a loss April 6, 2007, when the Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics.

Los Angeles has won both matchups this season, including a 101-85 victory behind Bryant's 22 points at Staples Center on Nov. 22. The Lakers have won six straight in the series at home, and are riding a 10-game winning streak overall at Staples Center, where they are 15-2 this season.

The Thunder have dropped four of five following Saturday's 95-90 loss at Houston. Durant made 6 of 18 shots and finished with 13 points, while Oklahoma City converted 2 of 12 from 3-point range.

"We're gonna get better," said coach Scott Brooks. "We're improving. We've got a lot of basketball left and a lot of games to get better with."

Durant, fourth in the NBA at 27.2 points per game, has been inconsistent of late. The forward had 27 points in a 109-98 win over the Pistons on Friday, two nights after tying his season low with 12 points on 4 for 18 shooting in a 100-86 loss to Dallas.

He's averaging 23.7 points in nine games against the Lakers, whom he has never beaten.

Oklahoma City has won all 11 games when scoring more than 100 points and is 2-11 when allowing 100.

The Lakers average 103.3 points, and have topped the century mark in the last 18 meetings with Oklahoma City, winning 15.

Kobe drops 40 on Thunder in close Lakers win

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- Grimacing in pain after landing awkwardly, Kobe Bryant managed to shake off a tweaked left knee late in the fourth quarter. Less than two minutes later, he was elbowed in the mouth. He shook that off too.

In their third meeting this season and a hotly contested one at that, the Thunder gave the Lakers all they could handle Tuesday at Staples Center.

Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook had a chance to send the game into overtime, but his 3-pointer from the right wing rimmed out as the Lakers survived and eked out a 111-108 victory for their fifth straight win.

After the game, much attention was on Bryant's latest nick, which happened at the 5:08 mark in the fourth quarter after he landed awkwardly after a shot.

"We're fortunate that he didn't do anything disastrous," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, whose team has now won 16 of its last 17 games.

Bryant, fractured right index finger and all, led all scorers with 40 points on 14-for-26 shooting. Pau Gasol recorded his eight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

For the Thunder, Westbrook finished with 21 points and a game-high 13 assists. Kevin Durant had 30 points on 11-for-19 shooting before fouling out late in the fourth quarter, the first time in his career.

In their last meeting at Staples Center, the Lakers (23-4) blew the Thunder (13-14) out. But this game had a similar feeling to the Nov. 3 game at Oklahoma City when it took an extra period for the Lakers to pull out the victory.

The Thunder, losers of 12 straight to the Lakers, used a 15-7 run to crawl to within one, 107-106, after Westbrook hit a clutch 14-foot jumper from the right wing with 25.5 seconds left. Bryant was intentionally fouled and hit both free throws. Oklahoma City called a timeout down 109-106 with 19.5 seconds left. James Harden, who had 16 points, scored a quick layup and Derek Fisher was fouled and hit both free throws.

Westbrook had a chance with 14.9 seconds but his shot went in and out.

"Good. Real good," said Westbrook of how his final shot looked. "I did everything right, played hard. I thought it was good. Can't be mad though. We fought and did a good job."

Free throws were big for the Lakers in the quarter as they went 11-for-13 in the period and 32-for-39 for the game.

The third quarter was huge for the Lakers. They outscored the Thunder 34-21 and shot 54.5 percent from the field.

"Defensively, we stepped it up," Gasol said. "We came out aggressively in the third quarter knowing that we had to make a run. The first half didn't look so good for us."

Durant was the only one to get anything going in the quarter, scoring 11 of his team's 21 points.

"I know we don't like to take a moral victory," Durant said. "But tonight (our team) showed a lot of toughness, a lot of maturity. It was a tough loss."

Thunder coach Scott Brooks said pregame his team needed a good start to give themselves a chance and that's just what happened.

The Thunder had runs of 8-0 and 13-4 to lead by seven before Bryant hit a floater with 0.4 seconds left to trim Oklahoma City's lead to 30-25.

The pace in the first half of the game favored Oklahoma City. The Thunder didn't waste anytime on the shot clock, firing early and often. They swarmed for offensive rebounds (eight), cut off passing lanes (causing nine Laker turnovers) and converted eight points on fastbreak baskets.

Westbrook had a huge first half, recording eight points and 10 assists. Four Thunder players scored in double figure early.

NOTES: The Thunder acquired guard Eric Maynor from the Jazz in exchange for the draft rights to Peter Fehse. Matt Harpring, who is injured, was also included in the transaction, but he will not report to Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City waived Shaun Livingston and Mike Wilks to make room for the new players. Maynor, the 20th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, averaged 5.2 points, 3.1 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 26 games with Utah.

Maynor will likely join the Thunder in Phoenix, Brooks said.
