Hornets-Raptors Preview

Unfortunately for the Toronto Raptors, Chris Paul seems to get especially motivated by the memory of lopsided defeats.

After avenging an embarrassing loss in last spring's playoffs, Paul and the New Orleans Hornets look to avoid being swept in their season series with the Toronto Raptors on Sunday afternoon.

Toronto used a 27-4 run in the third quarter to take control in a 107-90 win at New Orleans on Nov. 6. The Hornets trailed 83-65 at the end of the third quarter, suffering one of their worst losses of the season despite getting 21 points and 18 assists from Paul.

The embarrassment felt after a playoff loss to Denver drove the two-time All-Star point guard to have one of his best games of the season Friday night. He posted 30 points, a season-high 19 assists and added nine rebounds in a 98-92 victory over the Nuggets.

New Orleans trailed the first-round playoff series 3-1 after losing 121-63 at home April 27, then was ousted in the next game.

Paul scored 26 in the second half Friday and played a part in 41 of the Hornets' 52 points over the final two quarters. It was his seventh straight double-double since returning from a left ankle sprain.

Paul can now help New Orleans (12-13) reach .500 for the first time since being 1-1, but it will have to find a way to solve its problems on the road.

The Hornets are 2-10 away from the New Orleans Arena, while Toronto is 8-5 at home.

"We'll figure it out," swingman Devin Brown told the Hornets' official Web site. "We've still got a long way to go."

Toronto (12-17) had lost four of five before beating New Jersey 118-95 on Friday night, shooting 59.0 percent after being held under 100 points in five of its previous six games.

"It shows us what we can be if we apply ourselves," forward Chris Bosh said.

Bosh had 16 points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes before joining the rest of the starters on the bench for the final quarter with the game well in hand. Bosh had 27 points, making all nine of his shots from the field, in this season's first matchup with the Hornets.

Jose Calderon had 16 points and eight assists for Toronto in that game, but he has missed six of the last seven due to a sore left hip. Calderon, averaging 11.7 points and a team-high 6.2 assists, is day to day.

Jarrett Jack has been starting for Calderon. He is shooting 40.9 percent (9 for 22) from 3-point range in 11 games this month.

New Orleans has won two straight and three of its last four in Toronto, with the loss coming when Paul was sidelined.

Raptors guards, bench come up big against Hornets

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Toronto Raptors knew that the key to beating the New Orleans Hornets would come down to stopping Chris Paul.

Coming off a sensational performance in a victory against the Nuggets, Paul was a little more average in the Sunday matinee as the Raptors held on for the 98-92 victory.

"They did a very good job keeping him bottled up," New Orleans coach Jeff Bower said of the Raptors' defense on Paul. "I thought Toronto played a strong game and I give them all the credit in the world."

It would be hard to blame Paul for the bad game since it looked as though he wouldn't be returning to the game when he left in the second quarter after coming up awkwardly after a drive to the hoop.

Despite immediately calling for a sub and limping off the court, Paul returned before the quarter was over, but the Raptors held onto a 51-47 advantage at the break.

Paul was quick to shrug off talk of the ankle affecting him in the second half, but the defense of Raptors guards Jarrett Jack and Marcus Banks couldn't be ignored. Paul shot just 3-for-13, finishing with 10 points to accompany eight rebounds, seven assists and five turnovers. The Hornets as a whole could not get things going offensively, connecting on just 39 percent of their attempts.

In spite of its struggles, New Orleans was in the game down the stretch, trailing by two with just over a minute left in the game. After Bosh scored on a reverse layup, Paul was called for a travel and the Raptors made just enough free throws down the stretch to come away victorious.

"It's really tough guarding a guy like Chris Paul for the simple fact that he dominates the ball a lot," Banks said. "He can do anything he wants, he can go anywhere on the court that he wants. You have to slow him down and use the other four guys on the floor to get stops."

Raptors coach Jay Triano was happy with the effort Banks gave on the defensive end.

"The one thing Marcus can do is defend," Triano said. "He has been taking advantage of the chances he has had to play right now. He stays ready, he works out all of the time and is ready to go."

To close out the third quarter, the Raptors went on a 12-2 run with 10 of those points scored by rookie DeMar DeRozan and reserve guard Sonny Weems.

Weems played a career-high 30 minutes, scored seven points and dished five assists. DeRozan finished with 10 points as each of the Toronto starters reached double figures. Andrea Bargnani finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. While Banks played just 13 minutes, he spent each of them bodying up Paul, frustrating the guard to the point where he was yelling at officials about non-calls as the game was going on.

"Coach told me to come in and frustrate this guy," Banks said of guarding Paul. "Normally, he'll have a 20 and 19 game, 30 and 19 [last game], I think those numbers are unbelievable," He continued. "You can't take anything away from him, we just wanted to get more stops. We really wanted to win this game tonight."

While Bosh was solid as usual, finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds, he singled out the play of Amir Johnson off the bench and the defensive effort of Toronto's guards as the difference makers in the game. Playing just 21 minutes, Johnson led the Raptors in rebounding with 12 boards.

"We have to give credit to our guards, they played a good game and we tried to help them as much as possible when we had the chance," Bosh said. "He [Paul] is one of the best, if not the best, point guards in the league."

Perhaps the Raptors benefited from Paul tweaking his ankle, perhaps they were simply successful at shutting down a superstar. Either way, Jack (15 points, seven assists) was pleased with his team's effort in the game.

"I thought we did some great things in the New Jersey game and then to come in here tonight against a tough New Orleans team, I thought guys followed the game plan and everyone was active," Jack said.

Playing defense is the lesson the Raptors have been trying to learn collectively for the entire season. With the victory against the Hornets they are an NBA-best 10-0 when holding their opponent to less than 100 points.

"Defense comes from the heart," Banks said. "You have to want to play defense."

While his minutes will go down when Jose Calderon returns from injury, perhaps the team can continue to follow that lead.
