BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Some teams fight more than others while some simply cave as soon as a few breaks don't go their way. But you can't really say they never had a chance. Then again, the Minnesota Timberwolves (5-23) were going to need a perfect game to beat the Boston Celtics (21-5). They almost got one at home on Nov. 4 when they lost by two, but on the road Sunday evening, they fell before the Celtics, 122-104.
At the very least, it was over by halftime, when the Celtics took a 25-point lead into the break.
"We were very lethargic in the first half," Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "We didn't play with effort, energy and probably most importantly confidence." The dominant victory was as good a recovery as Celtics coach Doc Rivers could have asked for after Boston's 11-game winning streak was snapped by the Philadelphia 76ers Friday night.
"We were ticked," Kevin Garnett said. "It was definitely fuel for the next practice, if not the next game."
Atop the statistical laundry list would be 34 assists on 42 makes and 51.9 percent shooting, but more importantly Rivers was able to grant his starters some rest and low-impact minutes. Other than Kendrick Perkins, all starters played below their season averages in playing time, and though it may be a bland topic it remains the key to Boston's regular season -- just reaching the playoffs with strong legs and healthy bodies.
Minnesota did make a fool's gold run towards the end -- typical when one team keeps its starters in against the leader's bench -- but Paul Pierce returned to put an end to all the mischief with a triple that stretched the lead back to 19.
"It takes too much energy and time to get back in the ball game," Rambis said. "We had momentum, everything was working for us, and then a turnover, a bad decision in our offense, a poor shot, a run out, those types of things, all of a sudden swung the momentum back in their favor."
That final three capped a perfect night for Pierce, who tied a team record going 6-of-6 from deep -- matching Danny Ainge and Walter McCarty -- along with 7-of-7 from the line on his way to an efficient 29 points on 14 shots, his highest attempt total since Nov. 15.
No longer putting up consistently elite scoring numbers (17.6 a game), Pierce has picked his spots on offense. Nobody can argue with the results, particularly if Pierce is fresh come April, but lately he's received a little encouragement.
"I got really tired of Kevin yelling at me," Pierce said. "I wanted to be more aggressive than I have in the past few games.
"That's what teammates are for, to motivate each other. It wasn't a yell, though, it was like a real strong, stern voice," Garnett said. "He was terrific tonight." As were the rest of the Celtics, in unexpected areas.
A middling rebounding team, Boston held Minnesota to mere 25 defensive rebounds, pulling down 35 themselves. On offense, the path of least resistance was on the break against the third-worst transition defense in the league. Averaging just 12 fast-break points per game, Boston had scored 24 such points by halftime, two of which would be criminal not to mention in detail.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Eddie House chased down a loose ball, tipped it to himself and then proceeded to save it from fleeing out of bounds by whipping a no-looker behind his back to Tony Allen. Not to be outdone, Allen then soared into the lane for the dunk and a foul.
"I didn't think he was athletic enough to get to the ball," Rivers said of House, "and then he made a play once [he did]."
"That was all random," Allen said. "I kind of surprised myself. I wanted to lay it up and I saw him running so hard, so I just finished."
