AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Ron Artest didn't think the Los Angeles Lakers deserved any extra credit for beating the Detroit Pistons Sunday evening, even after an early-morning flight.
After whipping the New Jersey Nets Saturday night, the Lakers did not arrive at their Detroit-area hotel until 4 a.m. Sunday and most of the players didn't fall asleep for another hour or two. They were delayed by the snowstorm that ravaged the East Coast but still overpowered the shorthanded Pistons 93-81.
"Detroit was undermanned," said Artest, who was solid all-around with 14 points, nine assists, six steals and five rebounds. "I'm not going to be fooled and act like we did something special. Detroit didn't have their whole team."
Tayshaun Prince, Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon were once again sidelined by injuries as the Pistons lost their fourth straight, all to Western Conference opponents. The Lakers, who have the league's top record, won for the 15th time in 16 games.
An unsavory ending also left the Lakers feeling like they played a very ordinary game. They only scored 10 fourth-quarter points as the Pistons climbed within eight after trailing by double digits most of the way. Phil Jackson was forced to play Kobe Bryant, Artest and Pau Gasol six fourth-quarter minutes because their bench couldn't finish the job.
"The way we ended that game, I hate that," Lamar Odom said. "That's like my pet peeve, when we're up 20 and we've got to have Kobe come back in the game."
Los Angeles' reserves contributed only 15 points on 6-for-27 shooting and made five turnovers. Josh Powell's quick and errant jumper just before Detroit cut it to eight was typical of the bench's negative impact. The Lakers' starters had built an 18-point halftime lead by attacking the basket and making 19 of 25 free throws.
"The first half, the bell was answered," Jackson said. "I told them at halftime it was one of the poorest quality games I've ever coached in.
Everything seemed funny about the game. Twenty-five free throws in the first half -- just a slow-moving game. The second half, I was very disappointed we couldn't execute in the fourth quarter and I had to put the starters back in to save the game."
Bryant continued to play well despite the avulsion fracture to his right index finger. He had a game-high 28 points, four assists and five steals even though the finger ached at times. He is averaging 34.5 points over the last four games.
"Free throws, especially," he said. "It's been affecting me at the free-throw line quite a bit. I'll continue to play and let it heal that way."
Detroit's main healthy threat, Rodney Stuckey, picked up two quick fouls guarding Bryant and wound up with just 16 points and one assist.
When Stuckey came out in the first quarter, the Pistons were severely lacking in firepower. The group on the floor was averaging a collective 25 points, four less than Bryant.
The Lakers didn't need any more advantages but they showed no mercy until letting up in the late going. They forced 22 turnovers, leading to 19 points. Stuckey and Will Bynum (seven turnovers) were surrounded by big, athletic bodies every time they tried to enter the lane, creating chaos for their offense.
"They were the aggressors tonight. That's the bottom line," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "They were the team that attacked us, as opposed to us attacking them. It is interesting that no matter whether you are playing the Lakers or you are playing some other team, the aggressors usually get the calls and are the team that normally wins."
Bynum was held to six points, as was the Pistons' other prolific scorer off the bench, Charlie Villanueva. The Lakers' defense was intent on sealing off the driving lanes.
"We had to focus on them," said Bryant, referring to Detroit's guards. "Try to limit their penetration and scoring because if they were going to get a punch, that's where it was going to come from. We had to do a good job on them."
Lakers center Andrew Bynum did a better job offensively than the previous night, when he scored just four points and fouled out in 11 minutes against the Nets. Bynum had 16 points and seven rebounds but still left much to be desired from his coach.
"He had a nice touch on some of his shots," Jackson said. "Defensively, he was not there sometimes on screen rolls, so I had to take him out at the end of the game because he didn't follow through with the defensive pattern."
