After sitting out Denver's last game due to injury, Chauncey Billups' status for this contest is uncertain.

It might not make much difference, as Carmelo Anthony has proven to be capable of carrying the Nuggets by himself against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Anthony looks to lead Northwest Division-leading Denver to a ninth straight win over the Grizzlies as they meet Sunday at FedEx Forum.

Billups got hurt in the second half of Wednesday's 111-101 win over Houston, and underwent a precautionary MRI on Thursday that confirmed a strain of his left adductor muscle. The Nuggets (19-8) listed the four-time All-Star point guard as day-to-day, and he missed Friday's 98-92 loss at New Orleans.

Anthony Carter started in place of Billups and Denver's offense struggled to get in sync, finishing well below its scoring average of 107.7 points - one of the best in the league. Anthony was hounded by the Hornets' defenders and limited to 17 points after averaging 35.0 points in his previous five games.

"We missed Chauncey, of course,'' said Anthony, who failed to reach the 20-point mark for only the second time. "Once they figured out he wasn't playing, they made it their strategy to keep the ball out of my hands, which turned out to be a good scheme.''

Anthony hopes to bounce back against Memphis (11-15), one of his favorite opponents.

Anthony scored 42 points in a 133-123 win over the Grizzlies on Nov. 1, and is averaging 29.1 points in his last 12 games against them.

The Nuggets, who are 18-5 against Memphis since Anthony's rookie season in 2003-04, have won eight straight over the Grizzlies, the team's longest active winning streak over a single opponent.

Billups, acquired from Detroit last season, has played in Denver's last four games against Memphis. He finished with 22 points and a season-high 12 assists in the November meeting.

The Grizzlies, who haven't defeated the Nuggets since a 133-118 win on April 14, 2007, are coming off Friday's 107-94 victory over Indiana

All five starters scored in double figures for Memphis, with Zach Randolph leading the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds.

Randolph, acquired in an off-season trade with the Los Angeles Clippers, is becoming a major force for the emerging Grizzlies. The 6-foot-9 forward is averaging 20.6 points and 12.4 boards in his last seven games, with Memphis winning four of those contests.

"There are too many words to describe what he's meant to this team so far," guard Mike Conley said of Randolph. "He's been an energy guy, a guy who's been a leader for this team and a veteran. Going out and putting in the work he's been doing on and off the court has been amazing.''

Randolph didn't have as much success against the Nuggets earlier this season, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. O.J. Mayo carried the Grizzlies in that game, scoring a career-high 40.

In four career games against the Nuggets, Mayo is averaging 26.5 points, his highest-scoring average against any opponent.

Randolph's big game powers Grizzlies by 'Melo, Nuggets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Zach Randolph wasn't about to let the Memphis Grizzlies blow it down stretch Sunday against the Denver Nuggets.

Randolph scored a season-high tying 32 points, including 10 of Memphis' final 16 points in the fourth quarter, and grabbed an NBA season-high 24 rebounds to help the Grizzlies hold off Denver 102-96 Sunday at FedExForum.

Forward Rudy Gay added 19 points, Marc Gasol had 14 and O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley each had 11 for a Grizzlies squad that watched Denver cut a 23-point first-half deficit to two points on two occasions in the fourth quarter.

Randolph's 3-point play with 2:20 left in the fourth put Memphis ahead 93-88 after the Nuggets had made it a two-point game on forward Carmelo Anthony's 18-footer with 3:22 left.

Leading 97-91 with less than a minute to play, Randolph then put the game away with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. He finished 13-of-21 from the field and pulled down nine offensive rebounds in registering his 15th double-double of the season.

"They made a run and we stuck with it and got the 'W'," Randolph said. "Tonight, you know, I was feeling good. I was just trying to be aggressive on both ends.

"Winning games like this is what helps our confidence," Randolph said. "Carmelo came in and took some big shots, but we just kept playing. It's what we have to do. It's the NBA. Every team is going to make a run."

The win snapped Memphis' eight-game losing streak to Denver, which hadn't lost to the Grizzlies since April of 2007.

Anthony, the NBA's leading scorer, finished with 41 points on 13-of-26 shooting for the Nuggets, who were without point guard Chauncey Billups (left groin strain) for the second consecutive game. Denver (19-9), off to its best 27-game start in team history, was coming off a 98-92 road loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday.

"They jumped on us early," said Anthony, who had scored 42 points in a 133-123 victory over the Grizzlies in Denver on Nov. 1. "It was a wake-up call, especially for me, to be down like that [in the first half]."

Rookie guard Ty Lawson went scoreless and dished out two assists in replacement of Billups, who injured his groin in the third period of Denver's 111-101 victory over the Houston Rockets last Wednesday.

Nene had 19 points and seven rebounds and Kenyon Martin had 12 points for Denver, which connected on just 34 percent (16-of-47) of its shots in a first half in which it fell behind 50-27 midway through the second quarter.

Memphis meanwhile sizzled from the field in the first half, shooting 59.6 percent. Gay scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting, while Randolph, Gasol and rookie center Hasheem Thabeet combined to go 11-of-16 from the field before the break.

"I thought our guys played hard from the start," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "We jumped out on them. We withstood the run and showed a little poise in withstanding that run. We stepped up big and our defense was good with 40 percent shooting [by Denver]. It was a superb first half and they had great poise down the stretch."

Memphis (12-15), which improved to 8-5 at home, connected on nine of its first 12 shots in building an early 19-12 advantage. Randolph and Gasol combined to score 11 of the Grizzlies' first 17 points on a combined 5-of-6 shooting.

Denver fell behind by as many as 15 points in the opening quarter, as Memphis would go on to shoot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) in the period. Thabeet's one-handed jam over Nuggets forward Chris Andersen with 19.2 left in the first gave Memphis a 33-19 lead after one.

Denver shot just 26.1 percent in the first period, and wasn't much better in the second, as the Nuggets missed nine of their first 12 shot attempts over the first 6:07 of the second quarter.

But Anthony, who scored just four first-quarter points, began to warm up, scoring 14 of the Nuggets' final 16 points before the half.

Anthony's two free throws with 4:40 left in the fourth cut Memphis' lead to 88-86 before Randolph answered 17 seconds later with a tip of a Gasol miss.

Two minutes later, after Anthony's 18-footer pulled Denver within two again, Randolph's 3-point play gave Memphis a 93-88 cushion.

"I'm really comfortable," Randolph said. "I think the guys know the way I play, and I know how they play. We're really comfortable together. We're getting more comfortable together every game."
