Bobcats-Knicks Preview

After breaking a four-game losing streak against one opponent, the New York Knicks get a chance to do the same against another.

The Knicks will try to gain a measure of revenge for two frustrating losses to the Charlotte Bobcats this season when the teams meet Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.

New York (9-17) ended a four-game skid against the Clippers by rallying from a 20-point deficit Friday for a 95-91 win. David Lee scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half as the Knicks avoided their third straight loss overall.

"I thought our effort in the second half was unbelievable. David Lee, I thought his second half was incredible," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He really had a super, super second half for sure."

The Knicks also pushed their home winning streak to four games and are likely eager for the first visit of the season by Larry Brown's Bobcats (10-15) after suffering two difficult losses at Charlotte.

In the Bobcats' home opener on Oct. 30, the Knicks rallied from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter before falling 102-100 in double overtime.

New York had just as frustrating a loss Tuesday as Charlotte closed on a 15-2 run for a 94-87 win. The Knicks were in position for a fifth straight win after taking an 85-79 lead with 3:58 left.

"We win four in a row and we had a chance to win five. I think that's probably the most important thing in the world at that point," D'Antoni said. "We didn't play like it was."

Brown relished his fourth straight win against the club that fired him after going 23-59 in 2005-06 during his only season there.

"That was the best win of the year for me," Brown said. "I mean we were dead."

The Knicks got their first look at Stephen Jackson in a Charlotte uniform after he scored a game-high 24 points Tuesday. Jackson, acquired from Golden State on Nov. 16, is on his third team since the start of 2005-06, but those clubs have won their last nine games against New York with the swingman averaging 24.8 points.

Jackson had 23 points at New York in the Warriors' 121-107 win on Nov. 13. He has emerged as the Bobcats leading scorer at 19.6 points per game since the trade.

His streak of five straight games with at least 22 points ended Saturday as he had 18 in a 110-102 home loss to Utah. Gerald Wallace scored 30 and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Bobcats, who have dropped two straight since beating the Knicks.

Brown called the effort "unacceptable" and his players agreed.

"You've got to look in the mirror," Jackson said. "We're all blessed to have this job. We're all blessed to be able to take care of our families. I think we owe it to our teammates and yourself to go out there and play with more respect for the game."

The Bobcats have the league's second-worst road record at 1-11.

Gallinari rises as Knicks win over Bobcats

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- Nate Robinson's agent has requested that the disgruntled guard be traded, but that background noise hasn't slowed down the hard-charging Knicks.

One day after Aaron Goodwin asked Knicks president Donnie Walsh to trade Robinson, the Knicks beat the Charlotte Bobcats, 98-94, for their second straight victory and their fifth straight at Madison Square Garden.

Danilo Gallinari scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and made a critical block in the waning seconds on a driving Acie Law with the Knicks clinging to a 95-95 lead.

Gallinari missed two of his four foul shots in the final 19.2 seconds, but he and Wilson Chandler (team-high 26 points) combined to make three straight from the stripe to close the game out.

"I knew [Law] was going for the layup and I was just waiting for him to take the right time for me for jump," Gallinari said of the block. "And I did it so it was a good play."

New York (10-17) is 6-2 in its last eight games and 6-3 since head coach Mike D'Antoni dropped Robinson from the rotation and began serving him a steady diet of DNPs. The Knicks, whose poor defensive play contributed to their 1-9 start, have now held opponents under 100 points for seven consecutive games.

"Because we've had a bad start, this is a stretch you have to take advantage of," said D'Antoni, whose team is in the midst of a five-game home-stand. "This is one opportunity that we have to right the ship and get back in the hunt. We're doing it so far but we still have a few more games here at home."

David Lee put up 15 points, 15 rebounds and a season-high seven assists for New York. Chris Duhon added 13 points and six assists and Jonathan Bender, the former lottery pick who had been out of the NBA since 2005 before returning Friday night against the Clippers, had another quality game off the bench, scoring 11 points in about 15 minutes.

Charlotte (10-16) was without star forward Gerald Wallace, who sat on the bench in a suit with a migraine headache. Wallace is tied for first in the NBA in minutes played and ranks second in rebounds.

Without him, Raymond Felton scored a game-high 27 points and four other players reached double figures.

"Gerald, we have to really be careful," Charlotte coach Larry Brown said. "He wanted to play. I mean he was bugging me to play...I'm not the medical staff, but I think we'll do everything we can."

The 5-foot-9 Robinson is healthy, but also spent the entire game on the bench in his sweats for his ninth straight DNP.

"I want to play the game of basketball," Robinson said before the game. "I want to be a Knick. I want to stay here. This is where I want to be. And I want to play. I want to help this team win. I think I can do that. I expend energy. I do all the little things and I just feel I haven't got that privilege to play the way that I like to play."

Walsh said before the game he "assumed" that Robinson had asked Goodwin to call him about the trade, but Robinson denied he told Goodwin what to say.

"I say what I want to say. He says what he wants to say," Robinson said of his agent.

Walsh said he and Goodwin agreed to resume talks Monday "and try to get into it," but that his preference was to keep Robinson with the Knicks.

Robinson signed a one-year deal for $4 million prior to the season. He is one of six Knicks with an expiring contract, which makes him appealing to the Knicks because they are trying to clear salary cap space for the summer of 2010, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh become free agents.

The Knicks would only take back another player with an expiring contract, but other teams will likely be hesitant to move such players.

"That's been true since the beginning of last summer," Walsh said. "We're limited because we want to keep the room we have next summer...so it limits the trades that are available."

The Knicks could also opt to buy Robinson out and let him try to showcase his skills elsewhere.

"It's not personal," said D'Antoni, who previously said he would play "Satan" if he would help him win games. "I'm just trying to win basketball games. We've been winning lately. [I am] trying to keep the formula going and just trying to get as many wins as we can. That's my job."

Walsh insisted the 'Satan' comment was facetious and that it's not personal between D'Antoni and Robinson.

"He's facetious a lot and when you print facetious it doesn't always look facetious," Walsh said. "I don't think that meant anything by that. I think what he's trying to say is anybody who can help me win, I'm going to play. I think that was it."

The way things are going for the Knicks, Robinson isn't likely to see the court anytime soon.

And while he may be sulking, his teammates are celebrating.

"It feels good," Gallinari said of the win. "When you have these results, it's rewarding. I think we're definitely playing better. We're playing good defense for 48 minutes
