The Washington Wizards finally ended a string of agonizing losses, and they accomplished it on the road.

Earning a win in their next game away from home would be quite an accomplishment.

In the finale of a four-game Western trip, Washington will attempt to hand the Phoenix Suns their first home loss Saturday night.

The Wizards (8-16) had lost six straight - all by four points or fewer - before Gilbert Arenas carried them to a 118-109 victory against short-handed Golden State on Friday night.

Arenas posted season highs of 45 points and 13 assists, and Caron Butler added a season-best 28 points and 10 rebounds.

"We needed to get out of Washington and refocus," said Arenas, who is averaging a team-best 22.0 points after knee problems limited him to 15 games the previous two seasons. "People off the street say 'Why are you guys losing? Get it together!' You can get away from that when you go on a trip and it's just you and your team.''

The last time he visited Phoenix, Arenas nearly set a career high. He scored 54 points in Washington's 144-139 overtime victory Dec. 22, 2006.

The Wizards may need a similar performance Saturday if they hope to deny Phoenix a 10-0 start at U.S. Airways Center. They're also trying to snap a six-game skid to the Suns.

Although Phoenix remains the NBA's only unbeaten home team, it has struggled for sustained momentum because of its struggles on the road, which continued with Thursday night's 105-102 defeat in Portland.

The Suns (17-9) led the Blazers by 11 points heading into the final quarter, but were outscored 35-21 in the 12 fourth en route to a 105-102 defeat. Steve Nash's tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim as the team suffered its sixth straight loss away from home.

"We can't play good for 36 minutes," coach Alvin Gentry said. "We have to play well for 48 minutes. That's the only way you win on the road."

Gentry's team does play 10 of its next 12 at home, where it's scored 100 points or more in 35 straight games since Jan. 2, a streak that includes a 128-96 victory over the Wizards on March 21.

Suns guard Jason Richardson scored 35 points in that victory and had a team-high 22 in a 102-90 victory at Washington on Nov. 8. However, he might miss Saturday's game with a sprained right hand.

Richardson played despite the injury Tuesday night but scored just three points and shot 1 of 7 in a 116-104 home victory over San Antonio. That led Gentry to sit him for Thursday's game.

Richardson is averaging 25.3 points on 55.3 percent shooting in his last six games against Washington.

Amare Stoudemire has fared similarly versus the Wizards, averaging 24.3 points and shooting 68.4 percent in his last four games against them.

Wizards forward Antawn Jamison suffered a stinger on the right side of his neck after colliding with Golden State's Stephen Curry in the second quarter Friday. He returned late in the third, but saw his streak of three straight 30-point efforts snapped as he finished with 10.

Jamison missed last month's meeting with the Suns due to a left shoulder injury that delayed his season debut until Nov. 18.

Suns continue dominance at home with rout of Wizards

If the game is played at home, mark down a Suns' win.

The Suns, as is their habit, won another game in Phoenix Saturday night, their 19th straight home win dating to last season.

The final: a routine 121-95 whipping of the visiting Wizards.

The Suns (18-9) now are 10-0 at home this season, the only undefeated home team in the NBA.

As for the 19-game streak, they've beaten 13 Western Conference teams and six from the East.

The last time they lost at home was on March 12. During this span, every other team except the Nuggets (21-1) has lost at least three home games.

Suns coach Alvin Gentry, predictably, tried to downplay the Suns' seeming invincibility in the desert, saying, "I didn't even know" the length of the streak until somebody mentioned it before the game.

He had no particular explanation, saying, the NBA is "probably the toughest (big-league) sport to win on the road. It's such an advantage to play at home."

Gentry scoffed at any notion that the Suns might become too reliant on the homecourt.

He grabbed a marker and started writing down the Suns' upcoming home schedule on the chalkboard in the coach's office while giving a dissertation on the opponents.

"There's Cleveland, then Oklahoma City, and those guys are playing great, then the Clippers, and they're playing well, then the Lakers and Boston.

"I don't see how we can be the least bit content or complacent playing those teams."

An explanation, please?

One major factor is that the Suns' simply shoot the lights out at home: 52 percent vs. 48 percent on the road.

In particular, they are deadeyes from 3-point range: 48 percent vs. a more modest 41 percent on the road.

The result: They put up 116.4 points at home vs. 104.2 on the road.

On Saturday, the Suns poured in 121 points on 52 percent shooting and led comfortably throughout, unlike in their collapse Thursday in Portland.

"We played consistent," said Gentry. "We didn't have the peaks and valleys we've had when we've established big leads."

Amar'e Stoudemire had a smooth 23 points and 14 rebounds in 32 minutes, while Steve Nash had 15 points and 15 assists in just 30 minutes.

Jason Richardson, whose sore wrist apparently is now OK, shot 10-for-18 for 22 points.

As for the Wizards (8-17), they were playing the second night of a back-to-back set.

They pulled out a hard-earned win at the Warriors on Friday, a game that broke a string of six straight hair-raising defeats.

Both the Warriors and Suns play at a fast pace, but while the Warriors "pretty much let everyone" force the tempo, in Phoenix, "Nash makes all the decisions," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said.

"They end up more disciplined in how they approach who they get the ball to.

"Nash is going to make plays."

Saunders continues to find the right combinations in the backcourt to go with star Gilbert Arenas.

DeShawn Stevenson has been starting at the off guard while Earl Boykins and Nick Young have come off the bench.

Meanwhile, Randy Foye -- thought to be a mainstay heading into the season -- is trying to find a niche in limited minutes.

"Earl has come in and played well," said Saunders, "and Stevenson starts at off guard in part because of his defense, and in part to make sure our main guys at the beginning of games get shots, which has helped those guys get into a flow."

Saunders said he's told his players that in his years in Minnesota and Detroit, "I never went into games saying, 'I got to get this guy going.'

"You play as a team. When you start force feeding guys, usually what happens is you get turnovers. Guys start thinking they have to score, they take bad shots and bad things happen.

"The best thing for a guy like that (Foye) is to do the little things: defend, get a rebound, get a loose ball.

"All of a sudden you get to the free throw line and knock down a couple points. Do the little things and you give your team results."

In this game, Arenas -- who holds the arena record with 54 points (on Dec. 22, 2006) -- shot just 6-for--21 for 22 points.

Young shot 6-for-9 for 20 points while Foye scored 13 in 19 minutes of mop-up time.
