Thunder-Rockets Preview

As much as things have changed for the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston's dominance in the series has not.

The Rockets will look to defeat the Thunder franchise for the 13th straight time Saturday night when the teams meet for the third time in 2009-10.

Houston (15-11) has not lost to Oklahoma City (13-12) since the franchise moved from Seattle prior to last season and has won 18 of the last 19 meetings. The last loss for the Rockets came to the SuperSonics on April 4, 2006 and they have won the last nine meetings in Houston.

That hasn't changed though Houston has been without Yao Ming all season and Tracy McGrady is making a slow recovery from knee surgery. The Rockets, who have used McGrady sparingly over their last three games, have gotten 21-point performances from Carl Landry in both wins over Oklahoma City this season.

The Thunder could have an advantage since Landry's availability is unclear. He was taken to an emergency room after breaking several teeth in a second-quarter collision near the basket with Dirk Nowitzki during Friday's 116-108 overtime win at Dallas.

Landry, who averages 16.0 points, scored two in seven minutes and is day-to-day.

"Carl is our big guy off the bench and he wasn't here tonight," said guard Kyle Lowry after he came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points with 10 assists. "Hopefully all's well with him, but that's what our team is, we're a complete team. We don't have the superstar name..."

Not only may the Rockets be short-handed, but they will be facing an Oklahoma City team that is seeing its young players improve. Rookies James Harden and Serge Ibaka combined for a total of 16 points in the first two meetings with Houston.

However, they were a major factor Friday in helping Oklahoma City end a three-game slide. Harden scored 14 points and Ibaka added 12 as they made big plays down the stretch in a 109-98 win over Detroit.

"Those two rookies, they came in and did a great job of controlling the game in the fourth quarter," coach Scott Brooks said.

Harden scored Oklahoma City's first seven points of the fourth quarter and finished with a season high-tying eight assists.

"We drafted him to be a playmaker,'' Brooks said of Harden, taken third overall from Arizona State. "We've got some pretty good scorers on our team, and he can score the ball, there's no doubt. He's done it in college and he did it at a very good clip, but he's a playmaker. He makes good plays."

It was a game Oklahoma City wanted badly before beginning this three-game trip that includes matchups against Phoenix and the Los Angeles Lakers.

"It was really big," Harden said. "We lost three straight. This was our last home game before we go on a three-game road stretch so we wanted to come out here and prove ourselves."

Houston blew a 10-point lead over the final three minutes of regulation Friday before Aaron Brooks scored nine of his 25 in the extra session.

"Our guys struggled at the end of regulation, but they had a nice overtime, so it was a really good win," coach Rick Adelman said.

Unlikely heroes lead Rockets past Thunder

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Somehow, some way, the Rockets just keep figuring out ways to win.

Playing their fourth game in five nights, their ranks thinned by two more injuries to key rotation players, the Rockets simply reached a bit further down the bench as Saturday's game against Oklahoma City was winding down.

And the Rockets again found their unique alchemy, getting key plays from -- are you ready? -- Chuck Hayes and David Andersen to hold off the Thunder 95-90 before 15,095 at Toyota Center.

"I was just happy to get the win," said Houston coach Rick Adelman. "At the start of this week we knew it was going to be a tough week, four games in five nights. But we got three wins, so we have to be pleased with that."

The Rockets got the third win in that stretch despite playing without Carl Landry, who had dental surgery after getting five teeth knocked out the previous night at Dallas, and Chase Budinger, who suffered a sprained right ankle after playing only four minutes Saturday. And forget Tracy McGrady, who is still having his minutes rationed as he attempts to return from microfracture surgery on his knee.

But, as has been the case many times this season, the Rockets still figured out a way to get the job done.

This time they turned to the unlikeliest of suspects -- Andersen, who scored eight points in the final 6:30, and Hayes, who plucked four offensive boards in the final 4:28 -- to drag the Rockets to the finish line.

But while the Thunder may have been surprised by those doing the ambushing, the Rockets claim that they most certainly were not.

"I read an interesting quote about the Cincinnati Bearcats, and I think it's very appropriate for our team as well -- the next man in line," said Rockets forward Shane Battier. "No matter what the situation is, the next man in line has to step up, fill the role and pick up the slack for the guy who's not playing because he's injured, sick or whatever. We don't need to tell anybody to step up. It's sort of an understood thing -- OK, it's my turn. Time to pick up my game."

That time came midway through the fourth quarter, when Oklahoma City made a run that cut what had been an 11-point Houston lead down to 82-81.

The Rockets leading scorer, Aaron Brooks, couldn't find the basket with a 10-foot stepladder (2-of-15 shooting, five points), and Trevor Ariza, their second-leading scorer, suddenly had the yips at the foul line, missing five straight fourth-quarter free throws to mar an otherwise spectacular 31-point effort.

But with Andersen and Hayes complementing stat-sheet regulars like Luis Scola (16 points), Shane Battier (13) and Ariza, the Rockets rebuilt a seven-point cushion and took another win to the house.

"If you look at it, our team is not filled with superstars," said Hayes, who finished with 13 points and matched his career-high with 15 rebounds, eight on the offensive end. "We are all energy guys. Going through our lineup, if we don't bring energy, then we don't give ourselves a chance to win. We don't have the personnel to take possessions off or games off."

The Rockets brought that approach to defense as well.

Battier and Ariza spent the night tag-teaming Kevin Durant at the defensive end of the floor, limiting the Thunder superstar to 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Durant entered the game as the league's fourth-leading scorer, averaging 27.8 points.

"I think it definitely helps our team to throw different looks at him," said Ariza of the Rockets' defensive approach to Durant. "We can do different things. Shane is better at some things than I am, and vice versa. I think that giving a scorer like that different looks, I think it kind of takes them a little bit out of their rhythm."

Durant downplayed the Rockets' defensive approach.

"It was cool," Durant said. "I always play the same. I got the shots that I usually do, but I just didn't hit them."

Minus the usual production from Durant and Russell Westbrook (15 points, but only 4-of-14 shooting), the Thunder turned to Jeff Green (21 points), James Harden (15) and Serge Ibaka (10 points, eight rebounds). And with Durant and Westbrook struggling to shake free, Oklahoma City had no defined go-to guy down the stretch, which resulted in 1-of-6 shooting in the final two minutes.

And with the Rockets gobbling up the rebounds, the Thunder couldn't get any closer.

"We couldn't come up with offensive rebounds in the last six minutes of the game," said Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks. "The Rockets do that to everyone in this league. In the fourth quarter they got the offensive rebounds, and that was the key."
