EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- There were distractions if you really cared to look for them in the Lakers' 103-84 romp over the Nets on Saturday night at the Izod Center.
There was a blizzard outside that promised to wreak havoc on Los Angeles' travel plans. There was some pre-game talk by Phil Jackson about the uncertainty of his future after this season. And most shockingly, there was a Nets' halftime lead.
But as Lakers forward Lamar Odom said: "This is a business trip."
And for the defending NBA champions - and Nets - it really was business as usual in the end.
Kobe Bryant recorded 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead Los Angeles to its third straight win - after a couple of days off.
"We just got back to defense in the second half," Bryant said. "I mean, to me, it was really about having a couple of days off. So our rhythm was off (in the first half). We weren't on the string defensively. The second start of the second half, we were picking it back up and getting back in sync."
The Nets, who started a seven-game homestand, have now lost seven straight and fall to an increasingly eye-popping 2-26. Adding injury to insult, Chris Douglas-Roberts, one of the Nets' rare bright spots this season, suffered a sprained right ankle in the fourth quarter. X-rays were negative.
New Jersey, after getting blown out in a listless effort against Toronto on Friday night, were observing the positives - limited as they may have been.
"It's a little taste of how we need to play," Nets point guard Devin Harris said of the team's first-half play.
The Nets' second-quarter was actually one of the better periods they've played all season. Amazingly, they took a 48-46 lead into intermission. Harris returned to All-Star form in a 27-17 second quarter by pouring in 17 points of his 21 points and added a couple of assists, including a pretty alley-oop feed to Douglas-Roberts that tied the score at 44-44.
But reality set in with the third quarter. Los Angeles went on a 20-4 run to turn a 52-46 deficit to a 66-56 lead. Bryant scored 11 points in the rally and by the fourth quarter the New Jersey crowd - many wearing reversible Kobe Bryant jerseys - were chanting MVP for Bryant after a highlight hook-shot off the glass.
Harris, on the other hand, was held to four points in the second half. Bryant led the defensive charge.
"We really had to help a lot more and front more guys in front of the ball because (Harris) was getting to the rim way too easy at the end of the first half," Bryant said. "So we made a conscious effort...and I can't do that without trusting that the guys on the weak side are going to get my back. We did a much better job of that."
The Nets had a pretty good inkling that things were not going to go their way against the Lakers. Among the factors: New Jersey entered the game with only two wins and the Lakers only had four losses. Then there was the matter of a Los Angeles' 106-87 drubbing of New Jersey at the Staples Center on Nov. 29.
Contrarians might have pointed to the Nets' wanting to come out angry following an ugly and 118-95 loss to Toronto on Friday night and the Lakers possibly being a sitting duck after two days off. But...not so much.
Before the game, Jackson, the future Hall of Fame coach with nine championship rings to his credit, said in June or July he will decide on whether he'll return as Lakers coach. And winning another title this spring would not necessarily insure he would come back.
"If things didn't go well and we didn't win, that would obviously be something that would be . . . maybe it would be time for someone else to look at this job and carry this team forward," Jackson said.
"That's possibly not going to happen that way. But that's kind of an issue. But, just winning it outright doesn't mean it's natural to come back and coach this team. I just don't seem that has a natural thing. A lot of it has to do with the direction the league is going, the direction the ownership wants to go."
Jackson is earning $12 million this season, the final year of his contract.
"You have people cutting costs all around the league," he continued. "That's a big part of it. I think coaches' salaries are going to take a cut along the way."
