Wizards-Warriors Preview

The Washington Wizards have been coming up just short in their losses. The loss of players to injury is leaving the Golden State Warriors very short-handed.

The Wizards look to snap a six-game losing streak Friday night against a Warriors team that continues to contend with depth issues.

This is the second time this season Washington (7-16) has lost six in a row, but its current skid has been much more frustrating. The Wizards have lost each of their games by four points or less, including a 112-109 defeat at Sacramento on Wednesday night.

Washington, though, is still within reach of playoff position in a weak bottom half of the Eastern Conference.

"I told our guys we are going to make the playoffs," coach Flip Saunders told the Wizards' official Web site. "We are going to be playoff team. We are going to win anywhere from 42 to 50 games. It is just a matter of when we turn it around and everything starts clicking and we become more consistent over 48 minutes."

Washington continues to get strong performances from its top players. Gilbert Arenas had 33 points and Antawn Jamison added 30.

It was the third straight 30-point game for Jamison even though he was nursing a mild left shoulder strain he suffered in the second quarter. Jamison, averaging 22.1 points and 8.6 rebounds, isn't expected to miss any time.

Jamison is joined in the frontcourt by Brendan Haywood, who has been consistent at center. Haywood ranks among the league leaders with 10.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks a contest.

Golden State (7-18), meanwhile, is desperately thin at the position. The Warriors were already without starting center Andris Biedrins (back) and backup Ronny Turiaf (knee) before learning Mikki Moore will be out indefinitely after deciding to have surgery to remove bone spurs in his right heel.

Vladimir Radmanovic, a 6-foot-10 forward, started at center as the Warriors lost 103-91 to San Antonio on Wednesday night.

Golden State had nine players in uniform, one more than the league minimum. The Warriors have lost four straight and eight of nine.

"Our players, our team, has been keeping each other up," Golden State forward Corey Maggette said. "You can go bonkers with all that's been going on, but everybody is helping each other out. Monta (Ellis) has been the leader and he's trying to bring this team together."

At least the Warriors have their coach back. Don Nelson was with the team again after missing a five-game road trip while he recored from pneumonia.

Despite Nelson's return, Golden State was out of sync offensively, scoring fewer than 96 points for the fourth time in six games. The Warriors are averaging 106.3 points on the season.

"I've been gone for some time (and) I think my play-calling is a bit different," Nelson said. "I expect them to know the play calls and be where they're supposed to be."

Monta Ellis wasn't the problem versus the Spurs, scoring 35 points after being held to a season-low eight in a 117-101 loss to Philadelphia on Monday night. The fifth-year guard has scored 30 points or more in seven of his last 14 contests.

Ellis missed both of Golden State's matchups with Washington last season due to an ankle injury. Both teams won a game at home.

Road trip favors Wizards' Arenas in 118-109 win

OAKLAND, Calif.(NBA.com Exclusive) -- There's no place like home.

Unless you're Gilbert Arenas.

The Washington Wizards' quirky star scored 45 points and had 13 assists in the penultimate game of a four-game road trip, a 118-109 victory over the host Golden State Warriors, after which he said he never really wants to go back to the District of Columbia.

"Maybe I'll just stay out here until the next West Coast trip," Arenas said.

Arenas did have some familiarity with Oracle Arena, where he honed his skills as an NBA player before departing for Washington in free agency.

Playing more to avenge his recent struggles than to prove to Warriors fans what they missed when this embattled franchise allowed him to leave, Arenas hit 15 of 25 field goals and made 11 of 16 free throws to easily eclipse his previous season high of 34.

More important, he snapped Washington's six-game losing streak, a stretch in which all the games had been decided by four points or less, an NBA record.

But he made no secret of the fact that he is not enamored of being at home, where, he said, the pressure from friends, family and fans have taken its toll as he attempts to come back from knee surgery.

"When you are at home, sometimes you have pressure," Arenas said. "You have pressure to win. It's just the pressure sometimes. When you are out West, you are away form everybody. Away from family. Away from friends. Most of the media. People off the street say, 'Why you all losing? Get it together.' You get away from that and it is just you and your team.

"I needed this trip. Our whole team needed this trip."

Arenas has struggled on this trip in particular, missing shot after shot in the fourth quarter as the Wizards unexpectedly fell near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

On Wednesday night, Arenas had his pocket picked by Sacramento rookie Tyreke Evans on what would have been the game-tying or game-winning play.

But against the woeful Warriors, Arenas got off early and often. And when Washington needed him in the fourth quarter to hold off Golden State, Arenas scored 14 points, making five of seven shots.

"I can't make them all," Arenas said. "Everybody remembers the Jordan commercials, 'I made such and such game winners but you don't remember how much I missed.' You just got to keep them in your mind. You are going to make some, you are going to miss some. Right now, if I stopped on game-winners, I'd be ahead by about 60-some percent. I'm not going to worry about it."

Arenas' exploits nullified the career-high 27-point outing by Golden State rookie Stephen Curry and 30 points by Monta Ellis, who also had eight turnovers.

The Warriors (7-19) lost for the fifth consecutive time and seem mired in futility as they attempted to overcome a plethora of seemingly endless injuries and a severe lack of size.

On Friday they learned that center Mikki Moore will be lost for three months after having surgery to repair bone spurs in his foot, leaving the Warriors with an eight-man rotation and no real interior defensive presence, which is why opponents -- Arenas included -- are able to get to the basket so easily and score.

The Warriors are contemplating petitioning the league for a special injury exemption that will allow them to sign additional players to fill out their roster.

But general manager Larry Riley said he wants to see where exactly centers Andris Biedrins and Ronny Turiaf are in their recovery from their respective injuries before making any roster decisions.

That does little to help the Warriors now. They possess the second-worst record in the Western Conference, the fourth-worst record in the league and they have little chance of turning around what has become yet another wasted season.

The Wizards feel they still can turn around their fortunes, in part because Arenas seems to be getting stronger and stronger in his attempt to fully return from three surgeries on his left knee.

Washington coach Flip Saunders said Arenas is 75 percent back, noting, "If you can get 45 points at 75 percent, that's pretty good."

Arenas had some help. Caron Butler had 28 points and 10 rebounds, Brendan Haywood pieced together 15 points and 12 rebounds and Antawn Jamison had 10 points and 10 rebounds, though he suffered a stinger in his left shoulder that made him crumple to the floor in the second quarter, then arrive late from the locker room in the second half.

It was a frightening prospect given Jamison's history of shoulder injuries, but Saunders said Jamison should be fine.

Jamison, another former Warrior who once had back-to-back 51-point games for Golden State, felt well enough to joke around with Arenas toward the end of the game.

"I told him to put some oil on it because he has that old neck right now," Arenas said.

"He said, 'Look at your knee.' So the jokes ended after that."
