Kings-Timberwolves Preview

While Sacramento rookie Tyreke Evans has helped make Arco Arena a fun place to play again, the Kings are still trying to figure out how to carry that success to the road.

Evans and the Kings look to snap a seven-game road losing streak Friday night when they open their three-game trip against the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves.

The fourth overall pick in the draft after playing one season collegiately at Memphis, Evans has brought the Kings (11-13) back on the national radar by averaging 20.3 points - the second-highest total among first-year players. On Wednesday, he scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, including two key free throws with 3.4 seconds left after stealing the ball from Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas, as Sacramento improved to 10-3 at home by defeating Washington 112-109 in its first nationally televised game in two seasons.

"There has not really been a time when this coaching staff hasn't been amazed by this kid,'' Kings coach Paul Westphal said of Evans. "He got a (national) stage and he showed up. We've got a kid that's somebody in this league and it's really fun to see that and have this building rocking.''

The Kings were 11-30 at home in 2008-09, when they finished a franchise-worst 17-65.

On the road, though, Evans has played with a poise that belies his 20 years. He is averaging 21.1 points and shooting 51.6 percent from the field in 10 games, but the Kings are a Western Conference-worst 1-10 away from home.

Those road woes, though, may end quickly if both Evans and fellow rookie Omri Casspi can continue to play well. Making his first career start Wednesday, Casspi scored a season-high 22 points while adding five rebounds and three assists.

"Coach told me early in the practice facility that I would be starting. I was very excited, you dream about something like this,'' he said. "I felt strong, I felt ready, and things went good.''

Casspi is averaging 11.4 points, shooting 45.9 percent from 3-point range and 51.4 percent overall.

Both players contributed to Sacramento's 120-100 victory over the visiting Timberwolves (4-22) on Saturday. Evans had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists while Casspi hit two 3-pointers and scored 14 points off the bench.

Sacramento, which is fifth in the league in scoring at 104.7 points per game, has a good chance of winning its first road game since Nov. 7 as it faces a Timberwolves team that allows 104.7 per game.

Coming off Monday's victory at Utah, Minnesota (4-22) fell to 2-11 at Target Center with Wednesday's 120-95 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Timberwolves shot 38.5 percent from the field while allowing 120 points or more for the sixth time.

"This was a big step backward in my mind,'' first-year coach Kurt Rambis said.

Kevin Love, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday's loss in Sacramento, goes for his fourth straight double-double.

With Ryan Gomes questionable with a sprained left ankle, Al Jefferson will likely also need a big game if Minnesota is going to defeat Sacramento for the first time since a 98-96 win Oct. 29, 2008.

Kings forward Jason Thompson, who had 23 points and 12 boards in Saturday's win against the Timberwolves, has recorded just one of his eight double-doubles this season on the road.

Wolves shut down Kings' Evans for the win

MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com Exclusive) -- The matchup was a nightmare for Minnesota: A six-foot-on-tiptoes small fry like Jonny Flynn trying to guard linebacker-solid Tyreke Evans, the Kings' point guard and a 20-points-a-night scorer. "We decided we needed to shuffle the deck a little bit," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said.

Looks like he drew an ace.

Forward Damien Wilkins was handed the demanding assignment, and his bump-and-block defense on the rookie guard turned Sacramento's best weapon into a dud, allowing Minnesota to race to its most lopsided victory of the season, 112-96 at Target Center.

"Damien took one of their key components out of the ballgame, for the most part," Rambis said. "That really made it tough on them."

It turned the Kings into a jump-shooting team, and when only four of Sacramento's 27 3-pointers fell, the 5-22 Wolves had little trouble securing their second win in three games. Fellow rookie guard Omri Casspi scored 21 points in his second career start, and Beno Udrih added 18 points off the bench, but the Kings, who have lost eight straight road games and are 1-11 away from home, were no match for a Timberwolves offense that matched its season-high output.

"We wanted to eliminate their transition baskets, and limit their points in the paint," Rambis said, and slowing Evans was the key to both. Rambis took a risk by switching Flynn onto the 6-foot-9 Casspi and asking Corey Brewer to shadow Donte Greene, but it paid off when Evans scored only 10 points -- his quietest game since Nov. 2 -- and only two points after halftime.

"I just tried to keep my body on him, keep my hands up, stay physical even when he doesn't have the ball, challenge every shot," said Wilkins, who blanketed Evans, fresh off a 26-point outing against the Wizards, into a 4-for-12 shooting night. "He's got a lot of freedom out there for a rookie, which makes him harder to cover, but I kept telling myself, 'Stay aggressive.' "

The Timberwolves stayed plenty aggressive themselves, romping to a season-high 27 fast-break points. Minnesota outscored the Kings in every quarter, marking the first time this season they won a game after leading at halftime; they were 0-7 with the halftime lead before that.

"The guys came out of the locker room at half, and got together themselves," Rambis said. "They said, 'Let's do it right this time. Let's get off to a good start and don't let (the lead) get away."

Kevin Love made sure they didn't, collecting his seventh double-double in his nine games since returning from a broken hand. Minnesota scored 35 points in the third quarter, then went on a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to open a 21-point lead. They finished with a 16-point margin, Minnesota's first double-digit win of the year.

Love scored 20 points, which tied Brewer for the team lead, and added 16 rebounds.

And even with all that production, Love couldn't make his coach completely happy. As he jogged down the court after scoring a put-back basket, he was shocked to hear Rambis yelling at him about hustling to the other end.

"So (Love) looks at me and goes, 'Well, do you want me to crash the offensive boards, or do you want me to get back on defense?' " Kurt Rambis said afterward.

Rambis' deadpan answer: "Yes."

"Yeah, he's a funny guy, isn't he?" Love said with a laugh afterward. "But he's keeping us focused."

The Timberwolves needed that after a half-speed effort in an embarrassing loss Wednesday to the Clippers. This time, they were spoiling for a battle.

"We played hard the entire night, and we executed our gameplan," Rambis said. "We bounced back pretty well."

Particularly Wilkins. "It takes a lot of energy to guard [Evans], because he's so aggressive," said Wilkins, who added 16 points of his own on 6-for-9 shooting. "I'm pretty tired right now. But it feels good, too."
