Rockets-Mavericks Preview

As expected, Dirk Nowitzki has carried the Dallas Mavericks during their current win streak, but the Houston Rockets have had more trouble stopping top reserve Jason Terry in recent meetings.

Terry will try to rebound from one of his worst performances of the season by helping the Mavericks to a season-high sixth straight victory and their fourth in a row over the Rockets on Friday night at home.

Nowitzki, who is scoring a career-best 26.9 points per game this season, is the only Mavericks player averaging more than 14.0 points during the team's run (27.8 ppg), and he topped 30 for the fourth time in six games with 35 in a 100-86 victory Wednesday night at Oklahoma City.

The All-Star forward also shot a season-best 72.2 percent (13 of 18), grabbed 11 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season and earned praise for his defense from teammate Jason Kidd.

"I know you guys talk about Dirk's scoring, but I think it's his defense that has got him going," Kidd said. "People are always going to talk about his offense, but I think right now his defense I think has been the best that I've ever seen."

However, not everyone for the Southwest Division-leading Mavericks (19-7) was at his best Wednesday. Terry endured a 2-for-12 shooting night and finished with seven points for the second time this season.

Judging by his recent games against the Rockets, the league's reigning sixth man of the year could bounce back Friday. In Dallas' two wins over Houston this season, Terry has averaged 25.5 points while going a combined 17 for 19 from the field. Nowitzki has totaled 48 points in those games, which Dallas has won by an average of 24.5 points.

Terry has also averaged 26.3 points on 70.2 percent shooting during the Mavericks' past four wins against the Rockets. He missed a 93-86 loss in Houston on Feb. 20 with a fractured finger.

In Friday's matchup, he'll face a Rockets team that's in the middle of arguably one of the league's most difficult stretches this season.

Houston (14-11) plays 16 games from Dec. 9-Jan. 6 with 10 on the road and 10 on back-to-back nights. After this game, the Rockets return home to face the Thunder on Saturday night.

"It's utterly ridiculous," coach Rick Adelman said Monday. "But that's the schedule we have, it's just the way it is and we're just going to have to respond to it."

So far, Houston has fared well with a 3-2 mark since beginning that grueling stretch, but fatigue might be catching up. The Rockets allowed Denver to pull away late Wednesday night and fell for first time this season in the second of back-to-back games.

After tying the game at 71 in the third quarter, Houston allowed a 14-7 run to end the period and fell behind by 16 in the final quarter of the 111-101 loss.

"When we made a run, they made a run right back at us," swingman Trevor Ariza said. "Anytime they needed a stop or they needed to get it going, they did and we didn't."

The Rockets are trying to bring star Tracy McGrady along slowly in his return from microfracture knee surgery. In his first two games this season, McGrady has scored three points in 16 minutes.

Whether or not McGrady has been on the court hasn't made much difference in recent games against the Mavericks as the Rockets have lost most of them. Dallas is 27-9 against Houston since March 3, 2001, including 14-4 at home. That doesn't include the teams' first-round playoff matchup in 2005, won by the Mavericks in seven games.

Rockets halt Mavs' win streak behind Lowry's double-double

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- This Mavericks-Rockets rivalry may need a videogame-style content warning about gore and violence. It hasn't been a season series for the squeamish, and Houston's 116-108 overtime victory Friday had more than its share of cringe-inducing moments.

The Mavericks lost their leader, lost their cool and lost for the first time this season to the Rockets, a team they had trounced by a combined 49 points in the first two meetings. The loss also snapped a five-game winning streak by the Southwest Division leaders.

Dirk Nowitzki, who has been putting up MVP-type numbers, was knocked out of the game in the second quarter after a collision with Houston's Carl Landry, who broke three teeth and was taken to an area emergency room. Nowitzki remained in the game and hit 1-for-2 free throws left-handed, but proceeded directly to the trainer's room and received three stitches in his right elbow. X-rays were negative, but Nowitzki did not return and finished with five points in 10 minutes. He is questionable for Sunday's game against Cleveland. Landry will visit an oral surgeon on Saturday.

"It's not a one-man team," Dallas point guard Jason Kidd said. "That's the beauty of this team. We have so many guys who can put the ball in the basket and play."

The Mavericks staged a furious finish without Nowitzki to force the overtime. Houston held a 99-89 lead with less than three minutes remaining, but Tim Thomas capped an 11-1 spurt with a game-tying 3-pointer from the corner with 10.8 seconds remaining.

Aaron Brooks helped the Rockets avoided another sickening loss to the Mavs by scoring nine of his 25 points in the extra session, including the 3-pointer that gave them the lead for good at 106-104 with 3:18 remaining.

It was a much closer and competitive contest than the two earlier meetings this season. Dallas rallied from a 17-point deficit for an 18-point win here on Nov. 10 and rolled to a 130-99 rout in Houston on Nov. 25, the most points surrendered by Houston since April 1995. This time, however, the Rockets shot well from behind the arc (8-for-20), distributed the ball smartly and cleanly (30 assists, 13 turnovers) and defended aggressively (20 points off 16 turnovers). They got 50 points from the bench, paced by Kyle Lowry's career-high 26 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and five steals.

"We just wanted to go out there and get the lead and play hard and not let what they did to us the last two times happen again," Lowry said. "It shows our resiliency. We came back and finished the game off."

Lowry was 8-for-13, including 3-for-5 from long distance. Luis Scola added 19 points and 10 rebounds, David Andersen contributed 16 points off the bench and Trevor Ariza scored 13.

"Kyle was terrific," Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "He's just a tough competitor. He's always going to give you 100 percent and tonight he was making shots, he was making plays and that's kind of what we've been getting -- somebody different off the bench is stepping in and doing the job."

J.J. Barea matched his season high with 23 points to lead the Mavericks. Kidd nearly had a triple-double with eight points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals. Josh Howard and Shawn Marion scored 17 apiece and Erick Dampier had 14 rebounds, nine points and three blocks.

Nowitzki wasn't the only Maverick who didn't finish the game. Dampier and coach Rick Carlisle were both ejected in overtime after picking up their second technicals. Dallas was whistled for six technicals altogether in a physical contest. Afterward, team owner Mark Cuban said he was filing a protest with the league office over several officiating decisions.

Cuban cited three instances that all received lengthy in-game reviews by the officials: a clear path foul called on Jason Terry against Lowry with 7:37 left in the fourth; a turnover out of bounds by Aaron Brooks with 0.4 seconds left in regulation, in which no time was put back on the clock; and an alleged elbow thrown by Dampier at Brooks in overtime.

"We're protesting it because we feel there were multiple misapplications of the rules," said Cuban, whose team is 3-2 in overtime games this season.

Adelman called the game "disjointed."

"There was a lot of reviewing going on," he said. "I thought we were going to have to warm up again. It's one of those games you have to persevere, and you have to mentally stay in it and make plays, and there's nothing you can do about that. Fortunately, we did that."

Houston and Dallas will wrap up the season series rather early on New Year's Eve in Houston, but Ariza said there isn't any bad blood despite appearances to the contrary.

"It's just something that happens out on the court," he said. "A heat of the moment thing. We both want to win and I for sure want to win, so I am just going to say what I have to say and that will be it. It was a strange game, but we got it done and that is all that matters."
