OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- With the Oklahoma City Thunder mired in a three-game losing streak and facing a daunting three-game road trip to Houston, the Lakers and Phoenix, Friday night's game with Detroit was, if not a must win, a "very, very important," one as Thunder rookie James Harden put it during the team's shootaround.
A few hours later Harden and his Oklahoma City teammates took advantage of an injury-riddled Pistons squad, pulling away at the end to win 109-98.
"This was big, we really needed it," said Thunder star Kevin Durant. "We got stops when we needed to and we made shots when we needed to."
Durant led the Thunder (13-12) with 27 points, Jeff Green added 19 and Harden came off the bench to score 14 points and dish out eight assists.
"I'm just taking what the defense gives me," Harden said. "This was big for us - our last home game before the road trip. We really wanted to play well in the 4th quarter."
Rodney Stuckey paced the Pistons (11-15) with 31 points, a season-high. 20 of those came in the first half when Stuckey lit up the Thunder defense.
"You put it kindly by saying he lit us up," joked Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "He torched us is what he did. But we changed some things up in the second half and controlled him a little better."
Stuckey had only four points in the third quarter when the Thunder led by as many as seven.
"We haven't won on the road in a long time. It's always tough," Stuckey told reporters. "We have to come out the same way on the road as we do at home."
The Pistons had won five games in a row before this road trip and have now lost three straight as injuries continue to mount. Once again Ben Gordon, Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince sat out the game with injuries.
"We have beaten some of the top teams in the league with guys out, so that isn't an excuse. It's tough on the road," said Stuckey.
Despite being shorthanded, the Pistons would not go quietly, tying the contest at 70 on a Charlie Villanueva basket and they trailed by only four at the end of the third quarter. But OKC turned up the screws on defense in the fourth and began shutting down the Pistons offense. Three different possessions ended with shot clock violations.
"Very disappointing, very disappointing," said Pistons coach John Kuester. "That is when you have to lie to your legs and drive and kick, drive and kick. We had three or four bad possessions."
And the Thunder seemed to take advantage of every one, stretching their lead out to 13 at one point.
"We wanted to contest every shot," said Durant, "make it really tough on them and I thought we did."
Brooks had told reporters he thought Durant would play better Friday night after being held to just 12 points Wednesday against Dallas on 4-for-18 shooting. The Oklahoma City star broke out of that mini slump early going 4-for-6 and scoring 10 points in the first quarter.
Detroit led most of the first half before Thunder rookie James Harden tied the game with a lay-in and Jeff Green followed with a jumper that dropped in for the lead.
Harden brought a lot of energy for the Thunder and made several good decisions on the floor.
"James was our best ball handler tonight," Brooks admitted. "He's a really good playmaker."
In addition to Stuckey's 31, Charlie Villanueva had 16 and Jonas Jerebko and Will Bynum had 12 apiece.
Oklahoma City was outrebounded by Detroit 40-38 but blocked twice as many shots as the Pistons, something their coach still can't get used to.
"If you'd have told me at the beginning of the season that we'd be one of the league leaders in blocks I wouldn't have believed it." said Brooks. "I wouldn't have guessed we be as good at it as we are."
Oklahoma City is now 11-0 when scoring at least 100 points.
