Bobcats-Pacers Preview

A month after being traded to the Charlotte Bobcats, Stephen Jackson appears to be fitting right in with his latest NBA team.

Jackson looks to continue his recent success Wednesday night when the Bobcats visit the Indiana Pacers, one of his five former teams.

Unhappy with his situation in Golden State, Jackson was dealt to Charlotte in a four-player deal Nov. 16. Somewhat volatile at times, the 6-foot-8 veteran swingman is averaging 19.6 points and been a model citizen for the Bobcats (10-13), who'll try for a second straight victory after a 94-87 win over New York on Tuesday.

Jackson had 24 points and Gerald Wallace added 21 as Charlotte closed with a 15-2 run to beat the Knicks and win for the third time in five games.

"That was the best win of the year for me,'' Bobcats coach Larry Brown said of his team's comeback from a 12-point second-half deficit. "I mean we were dead.''

Jackson has been a key reason for the team's recent success, averaging 25.0 points in his last four games.

The Bobcats hope Jackson can continue his strong play as they try to avoid a fourth straight road loss. Charlotte is 1-10 and averaging 84.6 points away from home this season. The Bobcats are 3-6 all-time at Indiana.

Jackson, who was involved in the infamous brawl at Detroit while with Indiana during the 2004-05 season, is averaging 16.5 points in six games against the Pacers since they traded him to Golden State during the 2006-07 season. He was held to 10 on 5-of-13 shooting in the Bobcats' 104-88 home win over Indiana on Nov. 22.

Wallace had 11 points and 11 rebounds in that contest against the Pacers, and is averaging 20.7 and 13.3 boards in his last six games overall heading into this contest.

Indiana (8-14) looks to bounce back from a 106-98 loss at Orlando on Monday. The Pacers had won two in a row following a season-high six-game losing streak.

Mike Dunleavy had 26 points after scoring 24 in a 114-113 win at Washington on Saturday. Dunleavy, who's played nine games after missing the first 13 with a knee and hip injury, is averaging 21.7 points in his last three contests.

Though the Pacers shot 47.7 percent from the field Monday, their struggles from 3-point range continued by going 7 of 22 from beyond the arc against Orlando. Indiana ranks near the bottom of the league shooting 31.2 percent from long range.

"We're just (missing), for whatever reason and I can't put my finger on it - it's not because of a lack of practice because we practice shooting constantly," coach Jim O'Brien told the Pacers' official Web site of the team's 3-point struggles.

The Pacers are shooting 27.0 percent from 3-point range while splitting their last four meetings with the Bobcats.

Rookie forward Tyler Hansbrough has averaged 15.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in the last four games while Indiana star Danny Granger remains out with a torn right plantar fascia.

Pacers' touch from long range sinks Bobcats

INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Indiana Pacers may be finding their outside touch. As Indiana coach Jim O'Brien sees it, that the Pacers are also winning at the same time isn't particularly surprising.

With forward Troy Murphy, one of the team's top outside shooters, having one of his best games of the season and swingman Mike Dunleavy continuing to find his range, the Pacers took control early and held off a late rally Wednesday in a 101-98 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in front of 11,888 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

"The 3-point shot is really escalating," O'Brien said. "It's been more difficult to guard us." But it was Charlotte's inability to make 3-pointers -- or at least get one shot in time -- that decided the game.

The Pacers (9-14), after leading throughout, didn't secure the victory until Charlotte (10-14) missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final seconds. First, Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace, who had 29 points and a player O'Brien said would be an MVP candidate if he played Indiana nightly, missed from deep in the right corner with 3.8 seconds remaining.

After Indiana forward Dahntay Jones missed two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining, Bobcats reserve guard D.J. Augustin's successful 3-pointer was ruled to have left his hand just after the buzzer.

A replay confirmed the ruling.

During the timeout before Augustin's shot, Bobcats coach Larry Brown told the team whoever got the inbounds pass needed to shoot. Forward Boris Diaw got the inbounds pass, passed to Augustin, and time expired as Augustin rose to shoot.

"With 1.4 seconds, you can't have a pass," Brown said afterward.

Said O'Brien, "We had enough to pull it out. That's all that matters."

Murphy, who entered the game shooting 36.4 percent from 3-point range, made his first five 3-pointers, finishing 5-of-7 with a game-high 26 points, 15 rebounds and three assists.

"I'm feeling much better and hitting my baskets now," Murphy said.

"He's been stroking the ball well," O'Brien said. "We've been waiting for a long time to start getting the 3-point shot knocked down. I thought it was a terrific game against a solid basketball team." Indiana entered the game 23rd in the NBA in 3-point shooting at 31.2 percent.

That would have been Indiana's lowest percentage since 1986-87, but in the last three games, Indiana twice has shot 45 percent or better from 3-point range -- the Pacers shot 10 of 22 in a victory over Washington on Saturday -- and Indiana won each game.

The reason, O'Brien said, can be traced to the return of Mike Dunleavy, who in his second game back in the starting lineup made 3 of 5 three-pointers and finished with 15 points.

But O'Brien said Dunleavy, who missed the early part of the season recovering from a knee injury, has impact beyond when he's doing the shooting.

"It's a matter of getting Michael on the court more," O'Brien said. "With Michael on the court, we move better. If you a, space the court; and b, move better, it's harder for teams to guard both of those concepts. Movement is hard to guard."

The Bobcats, after trailing 23-9 midway through the first quarter cut the lead to one point late in the quarter, but never led. The Pacers got the lead back to 11 midway through the second quarter, pushed it to 18 early in the third and the closest Charlotte got was the final margin.

"We have to play better at the beginning of games," Bobcats forward Stephen Jackson said. "We always start off slow and use all of our energy to get back into the game and it's too late. You can't do that on the road against any team. That's been kind of contagious with us."

With Wallace shooting 10 of 18 from the floor and finishing with 12 rebounds, Jackson -- booed often in his second return to Indiana this season (the first came with Golden State) -- finished with 22 points on 7 of 23 shooting with five turnovers.

Center Tyson Chandler had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte.

"We're giving the other team a head start," Chandler said. "That's kind of the expected on the road. The home team is going to come out pumped up, but we can't wait to start our push until the fourth quarter. On the road, we're giving the other team that head start, coming back, but not closing great."
