Pistons-Rockets Preview

After struggling the first two months of the season while playing short-handed, the Detroit Pistons have put together their longest winning streak in almost a year.

Leading to even more optimism is the team finally getting healthy.

Richard Hamilton and the Pistons look to win their sixth straight as they visit the Houston Rockets on Tuesday.

Detroit (11-12), which has been severely hampered by injuries, got a boost in its latest contest with the surprise return of Hamilton, who hadn't played since the season opener because of an ankle injury.

Hamilton finished with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting in Saturday's 104-95 win over Golden State.

"I've got to give kudos to Rip - tonight was really the first time he's even run up and down the floor, but he just wanted to help the team," coach John Kuester said. "I've been in the game for 20 years, and very rarely do you see a guy do what he did tonight."

Hamilton did not plan on playing, even as late as the morning shootaround.

"It wasn't feeling right, but I went home and my wife told me to stop feeling sorry for myself and to get out there and play," he said. "I knew I was going to be rusty, but I thought I could figure it out."

While Hamilton returned, Detroit was still missing three key players. Ben Gordon sat out for the third consecutive game with an ankle injury, Tayshaun Prince (back) hasn't played since the third game of the season and Will Bynum missed his second straight Saturday with an ankle injury.

The Pistons' official Web site said Gordon, who is averaging 18.7 points, could return for this game.

Detroit's reserves have made steady contributions during the current winning streak. Charlie Villanueva scored 24 points Saturday and he's averaging 20.0 points off the bench the last four games.

Detroit's winning streak is its longest since a seven-game run Dec. 23-Jan. 4. Extending it won't be easy as the team starts a three-game road trip. The Pistons, who are 3-8 on the road, visit New Orleans on Wednesday and then surprising Oklahoma City on Friday.

Houston (13-10) has been playing just as well recently. Although the Rockets are coming off an ugly 101-88 loss at Toronto on Sunday, it was the team's second defeat in seven games.

Houston shot 36.8 percent and was a season-worst 3 of 24 from 3-point range. Two nights after being outscored by 10 points in the first quarter in an eventual win over Philadelphia, it was held to 17 first-quarter points by the Raptors.

"We can't afford to start this way," said Luis Scola, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds. "We're not that good. We can't expect to come out and be down 20 and pick it up whenever we want to and come back and win the game."

Trevor Ariza, the team's second-leading scorer, will miss this game after being suspended for swinging his arm at Raptors forward DeMar DeRozan following a steal. The forward had only one point in that game after going 0 for 9 from the field in 26 minutes.

Houston swept the season series in 2008-09 and extended its home win streak over Detroit to three with a 106-101 double-overtime victory March 18.

Rockets handle Pistons in McGrady's season debut

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Rockets were forced to sit one headliner for Tuesday's game against the red-hot Detroit Pistons, but the long-awaited return of another star -- and perhaps the discovery of yet another in the making -- eased the pain quite a bit.

Out was Trevor Ariza, the Rockets' second-leading scorer, suspended by the NBA for one game. But returning to the lineup -- however briefly -- was Tracy McGrady, back after a long hiatus following microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Neither turn of events seemed to have much of an impact on the Rockets, who breezed to a 107-96 victory over the Pistons, snapping Detroit's five-game winning streak.

While the 14,899 at Toyota Center were surprised to see the seven-time All-Star make his first appearance since Feb. 9 of last season, perhaps the most surprised person in the house was McGrady himself.

"[Playing] wasn't even on my mind," said McGrady, who finished with three points while playing just under eight first-quarter minutes. "I kind of felt like this was the week [that he would be activated], but I didn't think it was tonight. I thought that maybe he [coach Rick Adelman] was going to talk about maybe [Wednesday's game at Denver] and then Friday [at Dallas].

"But I didn't think it [playing against Detroit] was going to happen because of the back to back."

It happened because the Rockets were mius Ariza, who was forced to sit out one game after swinging an elbow at Toronto's DeMar DeRozan.

But that gaping hole in the lineup was patched by Chase Budinger, who started in place of Ariza. In his first start, the rookie from Arizona gave an Ariza-like performance -- 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

"He was terrific," said Adelman of Budinger, who posted his first career double-double. "He made shots, he ran the floor and the thing he really did well was rebound the ball. We were kind of overmatched around the basket because they are a really good offensive-rebounding team, so we needed our perimeter people."

Budinger also gave the Rockets something they were missing with Ariza's suspension, an elastically athletic finisher around the basket.

"I feel like I'm a transition player, so when I get on the break I can finish around the rim," said Budinger, who speared one alley-oop from Aaron Brooks. "Credit Aaron and Kyle [Lowry] for getting me the ball in transition."

For the record, McGrady made his much-anticipated season debut with 7:44 to play in the first period. McGrady underwent microfracture surgery on Feb. 24, ending his season after playing in only 35 games.

McGrady's only points came with 1:34 to play in the period, taking a pass from Lowry and drilling a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

"It felt great to be back," McGrady said. "You guys have no idea what I went through. No idea. I was so anxious to get back out there. I don't have to prove anything to these guys. I'm a seven-time All Star. I have the individual accolades to show that I can play the game. I needed to prove something to myself."

Adelman said that the plan was to use McGrady in similarly short stints over the next four or five games, gauging his progress and effectiveness over that span.

"We're just trying to get him into the flow," Adelman said. "That's about what you're going to see, at least at this point right now. Just get his feet wet and see where he's at from that point on."

While the Rockets were able to patch their backcourt holes, the Pistons could not.

The Pistons, who played Tuesday's game without Ben Gordon and Will Bynum, both of whom are nursing ankle injuries, got decent production from Rip Hamilton (21 points despite sitting out the fourth quarter).

But they could ill afford an off night from Rodney Stuckey, who scored 17 points but made only 7-of-24 shots. And defensively Stuckey appeared to be overwhelmed by the Rockets' backcourt, unable to match the quickness of Brooks (23 points, 10 assists) or Budinger's size (6-foot-7).

It's not as if Stuckey was alone when it came to poor defense, though. The Rockets shot 54.7 percent (41-of-75), with every player save for Lowry making at least half of his shots. Luis Scola finished with 23 points, and Carl Landry added 19 off the bench.

"Going into the game I told our players that the aggressor would win the game," said Detroit coach John Kuester. "Houston was very aggressive, and that is why they won the game. They had a lot of easy opportunities in the transition game (27 fast break points). We had 26 assists and only nine turnovers, and with those numbers you would usually be in the game. We just didn't defend well."
