Wizards-Clippers Preview

Gilbert Arenas sounds like he's happy to begin a four-game Western Conference road trip in his hometown after the way he finished two disheartening games at home.

Arenas and the Washington Wizards try to end a four-game losing streak Monday night when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers.

Washington (7-14) fell 114-113 to Indiana on Saturday with Arenas missing two key free throws down the stretch for the second consecutive game. The career 80.5 percent foul shooter made 5 of 13 attempts over the two contests, also failing in the clutch in a 104-102 loss to Boston on Thursday.

"It's really frustrating," he said. "I'm shooting them all day. I mean, I don't even know why I'm sitting here talking about some free throws. I never fathomed that I'd be missing free throws again. Maybe it's just mental, because I'm making them in practice."

The Los Angeles-born Arenas is averaging 20.7 points on the season, but it hasn't translated to victories for the Wizards. Washington plays seven of its next eight on the road, starting with this trip that also includes visits to Sacramento, Golden State and Phoenix.

"Maybe this West Coast trip is what we need, you know," Arenas said. "Get away from this building, get into some territories where we can breathe a little bit."

Even the return of Antawn Jamison hasn't helped. Jamison scored 31 points Saturday and is averaging 20.7 like Arenas, but the Wizards are 5-7 since Jamison returned after missing the first nine games of the season with a shoulder injury.

"We're inventing ways to lose," coach Flip Saunders said.

The Wizards could see Mike Miller return soon. Miller, sidelined since Nov. 21 with a calf injury, is close to coming back and will travel on the trip.

Arenas, who hasn't faced the Clippers (9-13) the previous two seasons, is averaging 28.0 points in his last six games against them. The Wizards have won three of the last four meetings with Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is trying to split a six-game homestand after falling 115-90 to San Antonio on Sunday.

Point guard Baron Davis, plagued by an upset stomach that prevented him from practicing Saturday, came off the bench for the first time this season and led the Clippers with 20 points in 30 minutes.

"I've been a little sick, and I was getting a little tired and a little dizzy," Davis said. "But when you are out on the court, you definitely need to do something out there."

Los Angeles used its fifth different starting lineup against the Spurs. Sebastian Telfair made his first start in Davis' place and had two points in 20 minutes, finishing as the only Clippers starter that did not score in double figures.

Chris Kaman had 19 points and 10 boards for his seventh double-double. Kaman had 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting March 18 as the Clippers scored 67 second-half points in a 123-108 victory that ended a three-game skid against the Wizards.

Gordon helps Clips steal nail-biter vs. Wizards

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- Eric Gordon keyed another sizable comeback by the Los Angeles Clippers, matching his season-high with 29 points in a 97-95 victory Monday night against the Washington Wizards at Staples Center.

The Clippers (10-13) trailed by as many as 17 points early in the second half, but clawed back behind a 16-2 run late in the third quarter. They then held off a late rally by the Wizards to win their final game before heading out on a six-game road trip.

"This being our get-away game, this was an important win," said Clippers forward Marcus Camby. "This will boost our confidence and allow us to play strong."

Gordon's 3-point play with 3:28 remaining gave the Clippers a seven-point lead, but Washington crept back behind Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. Jamison laid in a loose ball with 59.4 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two points and Butler sank a 3-point basket with 11.8 seconds left to cut it to one.

Gordon then went to the free-throw line with 11.3 seconds on the clock, missed the first attempt but made the second, cutting L.A.'s lead to two. With leading scorer Gilbert Arenas on the bench after fouling out with 2:51 remaining, backup point guard Earl Boykins drove toward the basket. But Boykins lost control of his dribble and Gordon secured his career-high fifth steal to preserve the victory.

"I saw Brendan uder the basket," Boykins said. "He was on a screen-and-roll and was open. I wanted to make the pass and lost the ball, plain and simple."

The game was strikingly similar to the last time Gordon scored 29 points, when the Clippers rallied from a 20-point deficit to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies on Nov. 29.

Chris Kaman and Rasual Butler also had their best games this month for the Clippers.

Kaman totaled 23 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots, and was particularly effective in the fourth quarter, a stretch where he has struggled this season. He scored 11 points in the final 12 minutes, shooting 5-for-6.

"In the second half I started shooting the ball more and being more aggressive," Kaman said.

Rasual Butler scored 15 points off the bench, his best effort since scoring a season-high 27 in an upset against the Denver Nuggets on Nov. 20. Butler's scoring helped offset an off night for Al Thornton, who fell into early foul trouble and scored a season-low two points.

Baron Davis continued to struggle with his field goal shooting, finishing 2-for-14, but he managed 14 points and matched his season-high with 12 assists.

"Baron's leadership on the court was evident tonight," said Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy. "He really started taking the ball to the rim, got to the free-throw line and made the plays we needed him to make."

Camby grabbed 15 rebounds and received some rare support from Brian Skinner, who had played only three minutes this season. Skinner took advantage of his opportunity against the Wizards, grabbing 11 rebounds in 12 minutes, including five on the offensive end.

The Wizards (7-15) came in riding a four-game losing streak. Their most recent setback came Saturday against visiting Indiana, when Dunleavy's son, Mike Dunleavy Jr., made two free throws with under a second remaining to give the Pacers a one-point victory.

The loss to the Clippers stung just as bad, as the Wizards took a comfortable lead in the third quarter and appeared to have the game in hand.

Jamison scored 13 of his team-high 32 points in the opening quarter as the Wizards took a 25-21 lead. Arenas, meanwhile, was coming off his first triple-double in 5 and a half years, missed his first five field-goal attempts and went scoreless until the final two minutes of the opening half, when the Wizards strung together a 13-0 run to take a five-point lead into the locker room.

Washington then scored the first seven points of the second half and extended its lead to as many as 17 points before the Clippers ended the quarter on a 16-2 run to pull within two. Davis then scored his first field-goal in 11 tries to start the fourth quarter, tying the score at 69.

Then things went "a little haywire," said Washington coach Flip Saunders.

"We had an opportunity to come back and take the lead," Saunders said. "To our guy's credit, we were down seven with 1:20 to go and our guys fought."

Caron Butler finished with 20 points, Arenas had 16 points and nine assists and Haywood had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
