Hornets-Mavericks Preview

The Dallas Mavericks needed one of Dirk Nowitzki's most prolific nights of the season to earn a third straight win in their most recent game.

Nowitzki's quietest game of 2009-10 resulted in an overtime loss to the New Orleans Hornets last month.

The Mavericks and their star forward aim for a victory over their Southwest Division rivals Monday night, when the Hornets try again for their first road win over a quality opponent.

Nowitzki attempted a season-high 34 shots Saturday night against Charlotte. The last one ensured victory, as his jumper with 1.8 second left in overtime gave the Mavericks a 98-97 win.

Half of Nowitzki's 36 points came in the fourth quarter and overtime after he had begun by missing nine of his first 10 shots. He topped 35 points for just the third time this season.

"The definition of a franchise player is one who wants the responsibility for winning or losing," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "He wants the ball in his hands when the game is being decided, and the only thing he's thinking about when he gets the ball is finding a way to win the game."

Nowitzki is averaging a career-best 27.3 points. That production is a big reason why the Mavericks (17-7) lead the Southwest one season after seven losses in their first nine games put them in an early hole.

New Orleans found a way to neutralize Nowitzki on Nov. 4, holding him to a season-low 12 points and 4-of-15 shooting. Dallas still nearly won behind 35 points from Jason Terry, but the Hornets earned a 114-107 victory in overtime thanks to a season-high 39-point effort from star point guard Chris Paul.

New Orleans (10-12) has since dealt with a coaching change - replacing Byron Scott with Jeff Bower - and an injury to Paul, who missed eight games with an ankle problem. As a result, they face an uphill climb in their bid for a third straight playoff appearance.

The Hornets won the first three games following Paul's return, but that streak ended Friday when they were outscored 60-34 in the second half of a 113-96 home loss to the New York Knicks.

"Our defense was unbelievable. We've got to change that," Paul said. "We've had a few games where our defense was good. (Friday) it was horrible."

The bigger problems for New Orleans have come on the road, where the team is 2-9 with the only victories over the Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota. In their 11 road games, the Hornets' opponents are averaging 107.3 points and shooting 51.1 percent from the field.

Their 97-96 win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday snapped a five-game road losing streak.

The Hornets have won once in their last 15 visits to Dallas, with Paul's triple-double sparking a 104-97 victory Jan. 14.

Since the start of the 2007-08 season, Paul has averaged 30.9 points and 10.3 assists in nine games against the Mavs.

Barea's big night keeps Hornets reeling on road

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- A new scoring threat emerged for the Mavericks as two troubling trends continued for the Hornets in their 94-90 loss Monday at the American Airlines Center.

J.J. Barea scored a season-high 23 points, with most coming on drives to the basket, and became the first player other than Dirk Nowitzki or Jason Terry to lead Dallas in scoring this season. The Mavs won their fourth straight game and improved to 18-7 to match their 25-game start in 2006-07, when they racked up a franchise-record 67 wins.

"We just didn't give Barea enough respect in terms of his ability to impact games," Hornets forward David West said. "He kept getting layup after layup. We didn't have an answer."

The Mavs improved to 8-1 this year in games decided by five or fewer points and are an incredible 26-6 since the start of last season in games decided by that margin.

"The big thing is that we are winning those close games," Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd said. "We like when we are in control in the fourth quarter, where we're up by five, seven or 10 and we don't always have to make a stop or get a basket down the stretch. The big thing is we've won a bunch of close games and that can only help us down the road."

The road hasn't exactly been easy street for the Hornets. They suffered their 10th loss in 12 games away from the Big Easy and can only boast road wins over the Clippers and Timberwolves. Dallas shot 55 percent, becoming the sixth opponent in the past seven games to eclipse 50 percent against the Hornets.

Chris Paul had 20 points (on 22 shots), 16 assists and five steals for his fifth consecutive double-double since returning from an ankle injury. The Hornets were able to hang with the sweet-shooting Mavericks by converting a Dallas season-high 23 turnovers into 30 points. They also got solid production from the reserves, including three 3-pointers by James Posey and Darius Songaila's season-high 12 points in 11 minutes, all in the fourth quarter.

Barea was 10-for-13 and is averaging 14.8 points over his last four games. Five other Mavericks scored in double figures, including Nowitzki with a season-low 10 points. Four of them came in the final 59 seconds, however, including a left-handed layup off an inbounds pass from Kidd with 20.9 seconds remaining.

"It was kind of like football and Dirk just had to find a way to get open and he did a great job of using the basket to get the layup," said Kidd, who had 13 points and 13 assists. "He was the wide receiver and I was the quarterback and luckily we completed the pass. When you have a 7-footer like that who can move, it's an easy target to hit."

After the layup by Nowitzki put Dallas ahead 92-88, Paul missed badly on a 3-point attempt, but Songaila scored on a put-back attempt. A foul by Posey with 12.9 seconds remaining sent Terry to the foul line for a shot at redemption.

In the team's first meeting on Nov. 4 in New Orleans, the Mavericks led 97-94 with 13.1 seconds left. Terry and Barea combined to miss four free throws as Peja Stojakovic sank a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime, where the Hornets prevailed 114-107. This time, however, Terry sank both free throws to seal the win.

The game didn't exactly start out as a nail-biter, as the Mavericks outscored the Hornets 18-0 in the paint en route to a 35-18 lead after one quarter. Barea scored 13 of his points in the first frame.

Dallas extended its lead to 21 early in the second period, but New Orleans roared back with a 22-6 run. The Hornets' reserves fueled the comeback as Darren Collison, Hilton Armstrong, Julian Wright and Posey played the majority of the minutes, along with Paul.

New Orleans trailed 49-43 at the half, but tied the game at 60 on an alley-oop from Paul to Okafor with 4:31 left in the third quarter. It was the first tie since 13-13, but the Mavericks answered with an 11-4 run and maintained the lead throughout the fourth.

"Dallas is too good a team, has too much scoring potential and defensive ability to put yourself that far behind and come out successfully," Hornets coach Jeff Bower said. "We battled and are pleased with the way we played in the second, third and fourth quarters, but it was a lot to overcome."
