Rockets-Raptors Preview

The Houston Rockets are doing an excellent job of beating losing teams. They'll get a chance to face another one Sunday when they visit the Toronto Raptors.

Houston (13-9) improved to 7-1 against teams below .500 with a 96-91 victory over Philadelphia on Friday night in the opener of this two-game trip. The Rockets used a 46-6 edge in bench points to win after a poor beginning by the starters contributed to Houston's 10-point deficit following the first quarter.

Carl Landry scored a team-high 20 points and rookie Chase Budinger bounced back from a scoreless effort two nights earlier against Cleveland with 15 to lead the effort by the reserves.

"We've been doing that all year," coach Rick Adelman said. "We have somebody step up all the time and that's why we've been able to win a lot of games - our guys respond. I don't think anybody thinks of himself as a star, we're all just playing together and that's why the bench is crucial for us and it certainly was tonight."

Budinger has emerged as a key reserve and leads all 2009 second-round draft picks with an 8.9 scoring average. He's averaging 14.3 points in his last four road games.

"I just think it just shows he's going to be a solid player because he really struggled against Cleveland but he came right in tonight and twice, in the second quarter he did it and then made two or three big shots in the fourth quarter when we needed baskets," Adelman said. "That's what he's been: he's been a guy who responds and it's kind of typical of our team."

Houston and Toronto (10-15) have split their two-game season series the last two seasons. Raptors leading scorers Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani each averaged 22.0 points and shot a combined 54.5 percent from the field in the two contests in 2008-09.

Bosh recorded his league-high 21st double-double Friday but had a poor game with 14 points and 10 rebounds in a 111-89 home loss to Atlanta. He averaged 25.6 points in his previous four games.

"We can circle dates on our calendar all we want to, but until we become a better team and, individually, take the challenge a little bit better, we're going to stay where we are," Bosh said.

The Raptors are allowing an Eastern Conference-worst 108.8 points per game, and have given up an average of 114.0 in consecutive losses.

"It's really frustrating," Toronto rookie DeMar DeRozan said. "We've got to pick ourselves back up and move on to the next one."

Raptors guard Jose Calderon, who missed the past two games with a sore left hip, came off the bench against the Hawks and lasted just seven minutes before aggravating the injury. Jarrett Jack started in his place.

Toronto coach Jay Triano said Calderon had gone for further tests and did not know whether the guard would be available Sunday.

The Raptors are 3-7 against teams from the West.

Jack, Raptors outwork Rockets in matinee

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- On Sunday afternoon at the Air Canada Centre, the team that outworks everyone was outworked by the Toronto Raptors.

Stealing a page from the Rockets' game plan, the Raptors defeated Houston 101-88, despite playing without starting point guard Jose Calderon.

Jarrett Jack started his fourth consecutive game after Calderon aggravated his sore hip in the Raptors' loss to Atlanta on Friday night. While Jack did not play well in the loss, he certainly made up for it today.

Finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, Jack helped the Raptors jump out to a 15-point advantage at the end of the first quarter. Toronto went up by as many as 22 in the third quarter with the Rockets unable to get any closer than nine in the second half.

"I'm just trying to keep the boat settled," Jack said. "Hopefully we can keep it going until Jose gets healthy, because we sorely need him."

On this particular Sunday, the Raptors were OK without him as they came out with their effort and energy in full effect. It paid off.

Chris Bosh was solid for Toronto, finishing with 27 points against the undersized Rockets. Hedo Turkoglu scored a season-high 23 points and Andrea Bargnani added 14.

"They were very aggressive at the start of the game," Houston coach Rick Adelman said of the Raptors, who shot 56 percent in the first quarter. "I thought we played very poor in the first half, offensively. We only had three assists. We average 21, 22 assists. You get three in the first half, the ball stopped moving. We just had nothing going."

There were Raptors players racing up and down the hardwood, hustling on both ends of the court. Reserves meshing with starters and the bench jumping up to credit their teammates. This was a team effort that resulted in victory from a Raptors team that had been booed loudly at home Friday night for a lack of effort.

"We had a good effort and energy throughout the game," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "Good pressure defensively on guys with the ball, better than we've had."

Perhaps it was the game time (12:30 p.m.) that gave the Rockets trouble, as it was their earliest start of the season. Houston struggled from the floor, hitting just 36 percent of their field goals while allowing the Raptors to shoot 50 percent.

"We know we have to get out to a better start," Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks said. "We just have to go out and do it. I don't know. I can't pinpoint it. We got the shots we wanted, we got layups and threes, what more can you ask for?"

Brooks finished with 20 points for the Rockets while Luis Scola scored 21 to go with his 15 rebounds and Carl Landry finished with 25 points (10-for-13 shooting) and seven rebounds off of the bench.

Trevor Ariza had a game he would like to forget, missing all nine shots from the floor before getting ejected in the third quarter as he appeared to swing at DeMar DeRozan after the rookie stole the ball from him late in the third quarter.

By the time Ariza was ejected, the Raptors were already up 19. What had been a 13-point Toronto lead at half ballooned quickly as the Rockets fell apart to start the third, missing 14 of their first 15 attempts from the floor.

What was important to note was how the Raptors reacted to Ariza's play against DeRozan. While there has been much concern over the toughness and heart of this Toronto team, Jack immediately went over to Ariza to give him a piece of his mind.

DeRozan didn't seem at all phased by the play, just relieved to get the victory.

"I know it wasn't intentional," DeRozan said. "He was just frustrated, he wasn't hitting shots, they were down 20 and it was the heat of the game.

"That's still my man," DeRozan said of Ariza, a fellow Los Angeles native.

Jack, having not been involved in the play, saw things a little differently.

"I'm going to have anybody's back in that situation, no matter who it is," Jack said. "If I feel like somebody's taking a cheap shot at our guy I'm going to stand up for him, no question. I just went up there and let him know that what he did wasn't cool, we weren't going to back down from it and we weren't going to tolerate it, either."

While they have nine new faces and are still very much a work-in-progress, what matters to the Raptors is that the progress is happening. They are piecing together victories and learning lessons from their losses that are helping them to form their identity as a team.

Shane Battier, normally the Rockets player to go to when you need answers, didn't have any after the loss.

"It was one of those days," Battier said. "It was just one of those days."
