Knicks-Hornets Preview

Despite three straight wins, the New Orleans Hornets haven't been completely satisfied with their effort. A change in philosophy, meanwhile, has the New York Knicks in the midst of a rare successful stretch.

Coming off another close victory, the Hornets return home to face a Knicks team trying to win four in a row for the first time in nearly four years Friday night.

New Orleans (10-11) won 97-96 at Minnesota on Wednesday night, getting a layup by Chris Paul with 1.4 seconds left to avoid a loss to one of the league's worst teams. The Hornets were down 16 midway through the third quarter before making a move.

"I think we've got to be more focused in executing our game plan and stay with it," said forward Peja Stojakovic, who had 21 points.

The Hornets needed a layup from Darius Songaila with 12 seconds left to beat Sacramento 96-94 on Tuesday night. That was New Orleans' sixth win in a row at home, its longest run there since an 11-game winning streak from Feb. 27-April 6, 2008.

New York (7-15) has a chance to win four straight for the first time since a six-game streak from Jan. 2-13, 2006. The Knicks have been playing better after coach Mike D'Antoni shortened his rotation and put an emphasis on defense.

"Once you start playing and winning and having hope, a lot of this is psychological," D'Antoni said. "They just have a better feeling about themselves and more confidence, and I think too as we go forward we should be able to get better."

New York forced 18 turnovers in a 93-84 win over short-handed Portland on Monday night. The Knicks held an opponent under 90 for the first time this season.

While streaky scorer Nate Robinson was held out of the rotation the past four games, Jared Jeffries started the last three contests due to his smart play. He drew five offensive fouls over his last two games.

"We need to get wins right now and I think the whole team is taking on the attitude of (doing) whatever it takes," Jeffries told the Knicks' official Web site. "I think guys are sacrificing some of their minutes, sacrificing shooting the ball, sacrificing their bodies and putting extra time in the gym to get this team over the hump."

Eddy Curry's role is still to be determined. He was in uniform Monday, but didn't play after missing seven games due to a sore left knee.

D'Antoni wanted the veteran center to get more practice time before putting him on the court.

David Lee continues to start at center for New York. He had 28 points in the Knicks' 117-111 win over the Hornets on Nov. 2.

New Orleans center Emeka Okafor had 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in that contest. He was held to seven points and six rebounds versus the Timberwolves.

Knicks erupt in fourth to ease by Hornets

NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Time to face a reality that probably hasn't been mentioned in a while.

The New York Knicks are currently one of the hottest teams in the NBA. And once the Knicks found their shooting stroke in the fourth quarter Friday night, the New Orleans Hornets could do nothing to slow the barrage.

New York drained six unanswered 3-pointers to end on an 18-0 run and run away with a 113-96 win over the Hornets at the New Orleans Arena. The Knicks have won four straight and five of their last six.

The Knicks were down 96-95 with 4:43 left in the fourth when the New York trifecta barrage commenced.

Chris Duhon opened the run by hitting back-to-back 3s on consecutive possessions. Then Al Harrington sank a pair of consecutive treys to give the Knicks a 107-96 lead. Duhon came back two trips later to add his third 3-pointer of the span. Finally, Danilo Gallinari dumped in the final dagger as his 3-pointer ended the run, leaving the Hornets shellshocked.

Duhon, from Slidell, La., had about 50 members of his family and friends in the arena. He said he had to give them their money's worth. Duhon did just that with one of his best shooting night's of the season -- going 6-for-8 from 3-point land and 7-for-11 overall for 22 points.

"The main thing is that you have to win," Duhon said. "We've been on the road the last couple of games and we had to just keep it going. ... They were just going under all of the picks and I was able to knock it down. Once you start to make shots, that's when David [Lee] and I's pick and roll starts to get better. Once you have confidence and one or two go in, I just felt like I couldn't miss."

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni added: "He's playing a little bit better, a little bit more confident. I was able to rest him a little bit more [because of Larry Hughes' play]. ... He's good and he kind of erupted tonight."

Harrington can't be left out the conversation as he racked up a game-high 28 points. Wilson Chandler added 20 points and David Lee had 17.

The Knicks only went eight-deep in their rotation, and primarily seven since Eddy Curry only played 6:34 as D'Antoni tries to ease him back into the rotation. So New York's 55.1 percent from the floor and 13-for-25 performance from beyond the arc makes Friday night's effort all the more impressive.

"When you feel good about yourselves and things are going well, good things happen," D'Antoni said. "We banked in about three at the end. I think we're due. ... Just everybody hit shots, big shots. One after another. We're moving the ball really well. We're just playing really well right now. Hopefully we just keep our heads down and keep moving forward."

The loss for the Hornets has got to hurt considering they were sitting pretty with a 16-point lead at one point. A win would have put the Hornets back at the .500 mark for the first time since beating Sacramento on Oct. 30 to give the Hornets a 1-1 record.

"It was obvious we couldn't buy a shot tonight," said Hornets guard Chris Paul, who had 13 points and 13 assists. "Our defense was unbelievable. We've got to change that. We've had a few games where our defense was good. Tonight it was horrible."

David West led the scoring way for the Hornets with 20 points. Peja Stojakovic chipped in 16 and Emeka Okafor added 12.

The Knicks still have plenty of catching up to do in the Eastern Conference standings to become a viable playoff contender. But listening to what Duhon had to say, the Knicks feel like they're not that far behind the rest of the pack.

"We're definitely back in it," Duhon said. "We were definitely in a deep hole, and now we've put ourselves back in an opportunity to get into the playoffs, which is our goal. For us, we just have to keep going."
