New Jersey Nets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe had no head coaching experience when he was picked to lead the team for the rest of this season.

That's mattered little as the Nets have snapped a pair of lengthy losing streaks less than a week into his tenure.

He'll try to help New Jersey earn back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly eight months Wednesday night against the visiting Golden State Warriors.

After setting a league record with 18 straight losses to open this season, the Nets fired Lawrence Frank - the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference - on Nov. 29. Two days later, they tapped Vandeweghe to lead the team.

"Because of his ability to work with young players, to get the best out of young players, (Vandeweghe's) a natural for this job," Nets president Rod Thorn said.

Thorn has proved correct as New Jersey (2-19) earned a win over Charlotte in Vandeweghe's debut on Dec. 4, and snapped an 18-game road slide on Tuesday. Devin Harris hit the go-ahead basket with 14.9 seconds left for a 103-101 victory against Chicago.

"Is it over?" Vandeweghe said after the teams swapped leads three times in the final 27 seconds. "This is really about our guys coming to play at the end."

The 51-year-old coach will try to help New Jersey post consecutive wins for the first time since April 11-13, and the club could use another strong performance from two young stars.

Brook Lopez scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth 20-10 performance in seven games. Chris Douglas-Roberts, the third-leading scorer behind Lopez and Harris, has averaged 23.0 points on 56.4 percent shooting in the past two contests.

After scoring 100 points for the third time this season, the league's worst offense - 87.6 points per game - will try to take advantage of the worst defense.

Losers of four straight and six of seven, the Warriors (6-14) are allowing 113.7 points per contest, but they've had nine players or fewer in their rotation since Nov. 30 for various reasons.

Golden State's active roster could finally reach double digits for the first time this month Wednesday. Anthony Morrow is expected to return for the remainder of a five-game road trip after a death in the family.

The Warriors also lost Corey Maggette in the third quarter of Monday's 104-88 loss at Oklahoma City when he was ejected for arguing a foul call. Without Maggette, the Warriors' one-point deficit grew to 12 entering the final period.

"The tempo was perfect in the first half because we kept the crowd out, we were able to get to the foul line. (Maggette) was a big part of that," said Warriors assistant Keith Smart, filling in while head coach Don Nelson recovers from pneumonia. "As we moved through the second half, we didn't have that."

Monta Ellis tried to make up for Maggette's absence with 31 points, his sixth 30-point performance in nine games, and rookie Stephen Curry added a career-high 22.

They'll try to help Golden State earn its fourth straight victory over the Nets. The Warriors snapped a 10-game skid in New Jersey with a 105-97 victory on Nov. 1, 2008.

Ellis, Watson help Warriors beat Nets, end four-game slide

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NBA.com exclusive) -- When they look back on the 2009-10 season, the Nets may observe their 105-89 loss to the Warriors on Wednesday night as the moment they realized no measure of progress can be taken for granted.

At stake for New Jersey at the IZOD Center was the chance for two straight wins for the first time this season and three out of four overall -- which in these times and these parts is regarded as a stockpile of victories.

Instead, the Nets regressed against a struggling Golden State team they thought they were prepared for.

"I think this was one of those nights," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "They came out with a good energy. We struggled with our energy."

The Nets weren't exactly fooled. Coming off a hard-fought win in Chicago on Tuesday night, the Nets' pre-game preparation focused on containing fast-break points and keeping away from turnovers against a Warriors team that constantly applies pressure.

When it was over, New Jersey committed 22 turnovers, leading to 30 Golden State points. The Warriors had 28 fast-break points and had six players score in double-figures, led by Monta Ellis' 18 points.

"We made a lot of mental mistakes tonight," said Nets point guard Devin Harris, who finished with 19 points, but just two assists. "We talked about what they do well -- they create turnovers, they score off their turnovers. And we let our mindset go a little bit. We were careless with the ball, it led to uncontested layups. We kind of dug ourselves a hole."

"There's no excuse, really," added forward Chris Douglas-Roberts, who had 10 points. "They just outplayed us."

The Warriors, conversely, got the confidence boost they needed, snapping a four-game losing streak. C.J. Watson added to Golden State's cause with 18 points, with Mikki Moore tacking on 16 points, mostly on dunks. They are now 3-4 under Keith Smart, who is running the sideline while Don Nelson recovers from a bout of pneumonia.

"Anywhere you can get a win -- at home, in a barn, anywhere you can -- that's what the NBA is predicated on," Smart said.

The Nets trailed by 20 in the third quarter and clawed their way to an 88-83 deficit midway through the fourth quarter. But the Warriors put it away with a 12-4 run, keeping the Nets off the board for nearly three minutes after a Harris basket made it 94-87 with 5:27 left.

"It is frustrating," added Nets guard Courtney Lee, who scored 15 points. "I mean, we were down 20 and we fought all the way back and it got to five and it seems we got content with that instead of continuing to compete."

There was little mystery as to where things went almost irreparably wrong for New Jersey -- and right for the Warriors. The Nets led by as many as 11 late in the first quarter, but in the second quarter they got sloppy with the ball against the Warriors, who were only too eager to push it. New Jersey turned the ball over seven times in the frame and Golden State turned it into 10 points.

Watson scored 15 points in the second quarter alone, part of a 38-point frame for the Warriors. They turned a 26-15 deficit to a 58-48 lead at intermission.

With boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. watching -- and seeing little reason to throw his money around -- the Warriors opened up a 74-54 lead midway through the third quarter before the Nets patched together a 22-9 run into the fourth quarter, cutting Golden State's edge to 83-76.

"Their game is pressuring and fast breaking," Vandeweghe said. "And when you don't have the energy you'd like to have to back cut or keep moving to put the pressure back on them, it becomes very difficult because the other team senses that."

Now the Nets, at 2-20, go back to the drawing board for a three-game road trip.
