The Philadelphia 76ers are hoping Allen Iverson's impending arrival will help them turn things around, but they'd prefer to have already ended their lengthy losing streak before the return of the franchise's former star.

The Charlotte Bobcats, meanwhile, will have something to prove as they host the Sixers on Saturday night, one night after they helped another team end the longest run of losses to start a season in league history.

Philadelphia's eight-game skid is its longest since a 12-game slide from Nov. 25-Dec. 20, 2006, which helped expedite the Dec. 19 trade of Iverson to Denver after the outspoken veteran had led the Sixers offensively for nearly a decade.

This time, the team's struggles - combined with Lou Williams' broken jaw, which is expected to keep the young point guard out two months - prompted Philadelphia (5-14) to bring back Iverson, who had been a free agent after parting ways with Memphis on Nov. 16 following a three-game stint.

"He's a proven scorer, a winner, the toughest guy in the league. He's an asset and he's going to be a positive light for us," reserve Jason Kapono said. "We need to take care of our last game here. Hopefully we can get a win in Charlotte and then go back home, add him and go from there."

Iverson will make his second debut for the Sixers at home against Denver on Monday, but first his teammates will try to defeat a team coached by Larry Brown, who clashed with Iverson during his time with Philadelphia.

It hasn't been easy for the Sixers lately regardless of their opponent. Five of their losses during the streak have come by six or fewer points, and first-year coach Eddie Jordan said he feels like his team must play a "near-perfect game" to end the slide.

Philadelphia wasn't close to perfect defensively during a 117-106 defeat at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

"Every game, it's been something that's been getting us," guard Willie Green said. "Whether it's executing down the stretch, whether it's making sure we get that last stop or making sure we're in sync on defense, we're half a step slow a little bit and hopefully we can just continue to get better and find a way to win a game."

The Bobcats (7-11) had won a season-high four straight before a lopsided home loss to Boston on Tuesday, They followed that with a 97-91 loss at New Jersey on Friday, earning them the ignominy of becoming the first team to lose to the Nets after their NBA-record 0-18 start.

Charlotte lost despite 28 points each from Stephen Jackson and Raymond Felton and 20 rebounds from Gerald Wallace. The team got little help from its bench, with Flip Murray's five points the only ones coming from the Bobcats' reserves.

"We had some bad stuff happening," Brown said. "Turnovers. Fouled 3-point shooters."

The Bobcats had been the last team to lose to New Jersey, 91-87 on April 13, and they were also the victims in Philadelphia's most recent victory.

The Sixers won 86-84 at home on Nov. 18, but Charlotte has won the last three meetings between the teams at home, where it is 6-3 this season.

Felton's late-game heroics save Charlotte

CHARLOTTE (NBA.com exclusive) -- Every team needs a player at the end of the game who is willing to take the final shot, to risk being the goat in order to be the hero.

One day after becoming the first team to lose to the winless Nets, the Charlotte Bobcats found that player. The Philadelphia 76ers are still looking.

Raymond Felton accepted that role and scored seven points in the final 3:58, including the game-winner on a driving lay-up to lift the Bobcats to a 106-105 win.

"You've got guys who say they want the ball in their hand when the game is on the line," Felton said. "You've really got to take them. There's going to be good times and there's going to be bad times. There's going to be times you make mistakes when the game is on the line and you have to deal with the criticism.

"And you'll have times when you make plays and win the game. You've got to deal with the good and the bad. Some people can't deal with that, but me, I don't mind. I don't mind getting yelled at or fussed at because it's going to happen anyway. I'm glad we pulled through. We really needed this win, especially after that loss last night."

Felton hit a three-pointer and then followed up on the next possession with two free throws to cut the 76ers' lead to four points. He had the ball in his hands again with 13 seconds left and Charlotte down a point when Philadelphia center Samuel Dalembert charged out at him.

"My thing was to attack him," Felton said. "He was coming up and I knew he couldn't come up and try to go back with me at the same time. I just turned up my speed and tried to get to the basket."

Felton scored on the drive with 4.7 seconds remaining. A wild 17-footer at the buzzer by Andre Iguodala missed and Charlotte avoided losing to teams with the longest losing streak in the league on back-to-back nights.

It was questionable if Felton was even going to play in the game, after he injured his ribs late in the loss to New Jersey. But he scored 18 points and handed out a game-high eight assists in leading the Bobcats to the win.

Boris Diaw, who scored just four points against the Nets, led all scorers with a season-high 28 points. He hit his first four shots of the game, including three from behind the arc, and his 11 first-quarter points helped Charlotte jump out to a 28-22 lead.

Gerald Wallace chipped in with 24 points and 14 rebounds. It was his 12th double-double of the season and seventh in his last eight games. Wallace also did a good job defending Elton Brand when the Bobcats went to a smaller lineup.

Meanwhile the 76ers, who came in having lost eight straight games, got more bad news before the tip. First-round pick Jrue Holiday, who moved into the starting lineup when Lou Williams got hurt, was a late scratch with a right rotator cuff strain.

With Allen Iverson not slated to play until Monday, Philadelphia was hurting in the backcourt.

And things got worse when Iguodala sprained his ankle in the first quarter, which helped contribute to him missing all but three of his first 13 shots.

But Willie Green stepped up with a big night. He was a perfect 7-for-7 shooting in the third quarter and scored 20 points in the frame, as the 76ers rallied from a one-point halftime deficit to take an 86-78 lead into the fourth quarter.

But it was a different story in the fourth period, as Charlotte put more pressure on the red-hot Green.

"They were denying him, switching out on him," explained Philadelphia coach Eddie Jordan. "I tried to get him a little rest. Maybe he got a little fatigued.

"We didn't really go away from him, we were just trying to keep the flow. We were trying to go to Elton a little bit in the post, trying to find Jason Kapono, he had a hot hand. We were just playing off each other. That's how Willie got going."

Green finished with a season-high 26 points, but had only two in the decisive fourth quarter.

Iguodala picked up the slack in the fourth, as he scored nine points, including two free throws that gave the 76ers a 105-104 lead with 13.7 to play, setting up Felton's late-game heroics.

Thaddeus Young chipped in with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Brand, who returned to the starting lineup in place of Holiday, had 14 for Philadelphia, which hopes the addition of Iverson will give them another crunch-time scorer so the team can get a better shot at the end of a close game.

"I know Andre made a shot before in his career but I don't know if anybody else has done that on this team," Jordan said of having a guy to make the final shot. "That's what we're lacking. At some point it's on me, too. I've got to find some other sets to get a better shot."
