MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Rudy Gay got the go-ahead from his grandmother. Mike Conley got the OK from Grizzlies trainers. And just like that, the Grizzlies were whole again -- and winners, too.
Gay returned from his aunt's funeral and Conley shrugged off a sore shoulder, providing Memphis with the firepower to end its five-game road trip with an energizing 97-95 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
"Everyone here is really tired," said guard O.J. Mayo. "But nobody cares if you're tired, if you're ready to go home. You've got to play with heart. And we did."
Particularly Conley and Gay, both of whom missed Monday's 120-93 blowout in Utah, and both of whom could have easily called in sick again. But each of Memphis' cornerstone players decided their team needed them, and they each delivered 20 points to power the Grizzlies to their sixth win in 10 games.
Gay, whose great-aunt died over the weekend in his hometown of Baltimore, caught an afternoon flight to Minneapolis after his grandmother, Nell Austin, urged him to rejoin the team. "It was her last sibling, and I wanted to be there for her," said Gay, who rushed to the Target Center and arrived roughly 90 minutes before tipoff. "Basically, it was my grandma's decision. She said, 'Go back and fight.' "
That was Conley's choice, too. His strained left shoulder isn't completely healed, but he told Memphis' trainers that he wanted to play. "They put me through a 60-minute test -- dribbling and passing and different things to make sure my shoulder could deal with the bumping and grinding of a game," said the point guard, who posted a season-high scoring total, plus three assists and two steals. "I just wanted to get back out there."
So did the Timberwolves, who snapped their 15-game losing streak Sunday night in Denver. Minnesota played with evident focus in the first half -- the Wolves committed only one turnover in the first 16 minutes, and made 56.8 percent of their shots before halftime.
"They were just running freely on us, but in the second half, we got deflections, forced turnovers," said Memphis coach Lionel Hollins. "We've been on the road so long, everybody's a little tired. But I told them, 'We're here, we might as well play with some energy and try to win the game instead of feeling sorry for ourselves."
Must have worked. Memphis, trailing by eight at halftime, outscored the Timberwolves 30-18 in the third period, and held off the Wolves in a tight fourth quarter. Gay and Zach Randolph, who matched his teammates' 20-point night, each scored six points in the final period, and Conley hit a critical three-pointer and collected two assists in the last four minutes.
"We got going on offense, but the key was our one-on-one defense in the fourth quarter," Conley said. "We got a lot of great help defense on Big Al (Jefferson)."
Jefferson, Minnesota's most dangerous scorer, barely touched the ball in the game's final four minutes as the Grizzlies forced the Wolves to look for other ways to score. That success on defense allowed Memphis to survive an ugly stretch of offense as all the minutes took their toll on the Grizzlies down the stretch -- only one point was scored by either team in the game's final minute and a half, and Memphis scored only five points in its last eight possessions.
"We were wearing down, but we kept them from scoring, too," Mayo said. "Man, I can't wait to get home."
No wonder. The Grizzlies have played 12 road games in their last 17, including this eight-day, 2-3 trip.
The Wolves had no such excuse, having played three of their last four at home. Ryan Gomes scored 20 points, Ramon Sessions added 16, and Jonny Flynn chipped in 12 points and a career-high nine assists. But Flynn missed back-to-back shots in the final minute, and Sessions missed a pair of free throws with 1.8 seconds remaining that could have tied the game.
"It's such a disappointment, after the way we played in the first half," said Minnesota forward Damien Wilkins, who scored 14 points in his second straight start. "We got a lot of confidence in Denver, and I felt all night that we were going to win this one."
They might have, had they not reverted to their 2-16 form by shooting 43.2 percent in the second half, and handing Memphis 15 points on 10 turnovers.
"We got more ragged as the game went on," added Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis. "And Memphis got better."
They got better the moment Gay and Conley decided to play.
